Chelsea 4 0 Atletico Madrid

Salomon Kalou (centre) celebrates scoring for Chelsea
Kalou (centre) foudn the net twice after missing early chances for Chelsea

Chelsea comfortably defeated Atletico Madrid to win their third straight group game in the Champions League.

Salomon Kalou missed a great chance from 14 yards but then stabbed home from close range and headed home from a corner as Chelsea took control.Frank Lampard then struck with a low 25-yard drive before Luis Perea headed into his own net as Chelsea moved to the brink of group qualification.Atletico had chances but Petr Cech denied Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero. It was the sort of result that Blues coach Carlo Ancelotti must have wanted from his players after their defeat at Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.Chelsea created chances at regular intervals throughout the match and looked to be full of ideas and creativity in attack. But the result increases the pressure on Atletico manager Abel Resino, whose team have just one point from their three group games in the Champions League and are struggling in 15th place in La Liga. However, some of their enterprising play in the opening minutes belied their poor domestic form. The lively Forlan met a Simao Simbrosa cross at the near post and forced a sharp save from Cech with a glancing header, while Aguero drilled the ball into the side netting after a fortuitous bounce played him through on goal.Forlan drew another save from Cech with a shot on the turn, but Sergio Asenjo appeared to be less assured in the Atletico goal.He allowed a seemingly innocuous free-kick slip through his hands and into the net – but his blushes were spared when Kalou was penalised for offside.Kalou was guilty of an atrocious miss after incisive play from Deco and Michael Ballack cut open the Atletico defence but he missed the gaping target from 14 yards. However, Kalou did find the net when he converted Ashley Cole’s drilled low ball across the face of goal. Lampard also played his part in the goal, playing Cole down the left flank with a wonderfully disguised pass. The goal seemed to draw Atletico’s sting and the home team saw out the final few minutes before half-time without further alarm before adding to their lead shortly after the restart.Asenjo made a good save to deny Nicolas Anelka and was alert to tip over a long throw from Juliano Belletti that was allowed to bounce before heading menacingly towards goal. But there was nothing he could do to prevent Kalou scoring his second with a header from Lampard’s corner.Atletico did occasionally show some fight and Aguero should have done better after Forlan’s flick played him through but he seemed short of ideas after Cech raced out of goal and his shot was saved. And the result was put beyond doubt when Lampard scored his first Chelsea goal since 18 August with a powerful low strike.Maxi Rodriguez continued to press and probe – and he forced a save from Cech with a low strike. But the final goal fell to Chelsea with the unlucky Perea diverting an injury-time free-kick beyond Asenjo.

CSKA Moscow 0 1 Man Utd

Valencia (right) powers in a shot to give United victory

By Mandeep Sanghera

Manchester United put themselves on the brink of qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase with a win over CSKA Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Antonio Valencia earned the deserved victory late on when he angled in a strike at the far post after Dimitar Berbatov had flicked on a Nani cross.Moments earlier, Valencia had smashed a shot against the crossbar. The lively Nani had also gone close earlier on when his header was turned round the post by keeper Igor Akinfeev.United were back at the scene of their 2008 Champions League final triumph over Chelsea when keeper Edwin van der Sar saved from Nicolas Anelka to secure a win on penalties. That game had grass specially laid for it whereas the normal artificial surface was used on this occasion as a patient United notched their first win over a Russian side in Europe at the sixth attempt.

Despite CSKA being the more familiar with the so-called plastic pitch, United looked just as comfortable on the ball in what quickly developed into a cagey affair.

United were given a scare when centre-back Nemaja Vidic played his side into trouble and allowed Milos Krasic get in an 18-yard shot which he put over.At the other end, Akinfeev was nearly caught out before managing to scramble a 30-yard Paul Scholes shot, which bounced in front of him, over his bar.Gary Neville curled a left-foot shot narrowly high but, whether it was the pitch or defensive mindset of the teams, goalmouth chances were proving a rarity. As much might have been expected considering, going into the tie, CSKA had won their last six matches at home in Europe while United were unbeaten in 13 away games in the Champions League. However, Nani nearly changed the complexion of the match when he burst past Georgi Schennikov, although none of his team-mates took the gamble to get on the end of a cross he slid across the CSKA goalmouth.Portuguese winger Nani looked the most likely to get the goal the game desperately needed and was only denied when Akinfeev dived low to his left to turn his header round the post.

CSKA – managed by former Sevilla, Tottenham and Real Madrid boss Juande Ramos – might have been the home side but showed little ambition, with United looking the more threatening as the game progressed.Substitute Michael Owen missed a 10-yard volley from a Valencia cross before a lapse in concentration at the back by United was only rescued by the assistant referee’s flag.Krasic would have had a free shot on goal but was wrongly ruled offside.A CSKA goal would have been unfair on the visitors and they heeded the warning as they produced a slick move involving several one-touch passes before Valencia saw a sweet strike come back off the crossbar.Valencia made no mistake shortly afterwards when he scored the goal to reward a professional performance, leaving United commandingly top of Group B with three wins out of three.

Beckham ‘should go to World Cup’

By Mandeep Sanghera

AC Milan’s Clarence Seedorf believes David Beckham deserves to be in England’s squad for the 2010 World Cup.

Fellow midfielder Beckham, 34, is set to return to Seedorf’s club on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy in January to boost his chances of making the finals.Seedorf told BBC Sport: “There should not be any discussion for anybody in England about taking David to what will most probably be his last World Cup.”His will to perform and still play for the national team is very big.”Beckham did not feature in England’s recent 1-0 defeat in Ukraine but made an appearance as a substitute in the 3-0 win over Belarus. He turns 35 in May 2010 – a month before the start of the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Asked if Beckham was good enough and fit enough to play in the World Cup at that age, Seedorf said: “Of course he is.”He showed that here with Milan and he will definitely show it again once he’s back, there is no doubt about that.”

England manager Fabio Capello has made it clear that Beckham needs to be playing in Europe to stand a chance of securing a place in the World Cup squad. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, who has played in three World Cups, revealed last week that a return to AC Milan is “95% done”.Beckham’s first stint at the San Siro began in the January transfer window and helped him get back into the England reckoning.

He was initially only scheduled to spend three months with the Italian outfit during the Major League Soccer off-season but extended his time until the end of the Serie A campaign. He returned to LA Galaxy during the summer and will feature for them in the upcoming MLS play-offs before his anticipated return to Milan. The Serie A side have made an unconvincing start to their season after the departures of manager Carlo Ancelotti, who is now at Chelsea, and playmaker Kaka, who joined Real Madrid in June. However, Seedorf said the expected return of Beckham would aid the team.

Capello reveals Beckham ultimatum”He was already a great help last year,” stated the 33-year-old former Dutch international, who is the only player to win the Champions League with three different clubs – Ajax, Real Madrid and Milan.”I’m very happy that he will be back again as we also became friends.”We all know Beckham. The most important thing is that he is going to bring a lot of professionalism and personality with his game.”His specific qualities are well known but what we need in a team of AC Milan players are those who are not afraid to play the big games and not afraid to take responsibility – and David is such a player.”
