Saviola reacts after scoring the opener at the Estadio da Luz

Everton’s heaviest defeat in Europe saw them lose their unbeaten record in the Europa League to an excellent Benfica.

Angel di Maria played a blinder on the left wing, setting up the first three goals – the opener for Javier Saviola, and the next two for Oscar Cardozo.Luisao’s header from a Pablo Aimar corner made it 4-0, and Di Maria set up Saviola for the final goal.Everton, with 11 players unavailable, struggled and Benfica goalkeeper Julio Cesar did not have a save to make.

Celtic 0 1 Hamburg

By Clive Lindsay

Marcus Berg celebrates his goal for Hamburg
Berg broke the deadlock for Hamburg at Celtic Park

Marcus Berg’s second-half strike edged Hamburg to a deserved Europa League victory over a Celtic side left rooted to the foot of Group C.

Celtic’s Scott Brown and Shaun Maloney squandered the best chances of an even first-half against the Germans.

An Eljero Elia drive struck Celtic’s crossbar after the break before Hamburg broke the deadlock after 62 minutes.Berg fired low into the far corner after a Ze Roberton pass to leave Celtic with an uphill task to qualify. It left Celtic without a win in their four home European games this season and three points adrift of third placed Rapid Vienna, who were hammered 5-1 away to Hapoel Tel-Aviv.Celtic manager Tony Mowbray had adopted a conservative approach, dropping striker Georgios Samaras to the bench, with Maloney returning to make a five-man midfield in which Landry N’Guemo replaced wing man Niall McGinn. With defender Jerome Boateng having failed a late fitness test, Hamburg went into the game without nine first-team players through injury but showed immediately that they were full of confidence. The joint Bundesliga leaders threatened first, with Jonathan Pitroipa, handed his chance in the absence of three injured strikers, driving a shot at goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

The 13th minute proved unlucky for both sides as the first clear-cut chances were created.First, Maloney’s corner was flicked on off the head of Celtic captain Stephen McManus and Brown’s attempt to side-foot the ball home at the back post was sliced wide from eight yards.Hamburg immediately countered and Marcus Berg fired wide from just inside the penalty box and the visitors thereafter looked the more threatening in a game that ebbed and flowed from end to end.

Shaun Maloney in despair after his miss
Maloney missed a great chance to open the scoring for Celtic

Brown, being employed as the forward midfield man in support of lone striker Scott McDonald, found space to fire a low drive at Frank Rost, but it was straight at the goalkeeper.Pitroipa and Berg squandered half chances for Hamburg, while Dennis Aogo curled a free-kick a few feet over from 25 yards. However, it was Celtic who ought to have gone in at half-time with a lead when a N’Guemo header fell to Shaun Maloney unmarked 10 yards out, but the little forward poked his volley wide on the turn before it was cleared. From the resulting corner, McDonald fired wide under pressure from close range and Celtic appeared to take heart from that spell of pressure as they returned for the second half.Celtic were pinging low balls into the Hamburg box, but a low drive from McGeady that rolled into the arms of Rost was all they could muster on target.Hamburg weathered that storm and Pitroipa weaved his way into the box and set up Eljero Elia 16 yards out, but the Netherlands winger’s drive struck the top of the crossbar. The visitors broke the deadlock when Berg chested the ball down to Ze Roberto, who returned the ball quickly to the striker to fire the ball low into the far corner from the edge of the box.A low drive after a neat shimmy from substitute Paddy McCourt forced Rost into a fine save to prevent the ball nestling into the far corner and giving Celtic a draw.

Fulham-Roma 1-1

Police want Southampton fans’ help in finding violent thugs
Southern Daily Echo
21 October 2009
By Corey Stephenson

HAMPSHIRE police are hoping Saints fans will help them find thugs who have targeted visiting fans at St. Mary’s this season.

Officers have released these pictures of three men they want to speak to in connection with hooligan violence by Saints supporters. They were in the crowd for the home clash against Yeovil, at which two visiting fans were attacked. Shortly after the final whistle on Saturday, September 19, a 38-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth were viciously beaten up at the Six Dials junction just a few hundred yards from the stadium.Police say a gang kicked and punched the victims to the ground, where they were then repeatedly kicked and stamped on.Five people have been arrested and released on bail, but police are still looking to trace three others in connection with the incident following Saints’ 2-0 win.

Police close in on football thugs

A crackdown on violence against visiting football fans has been started in Southampton.

Hampshire Constabulary said there has been an increase in attacks since the start of the season.Police want to track down a handful of people suspected of attacking rival supporters in Southampton on match-days.Officers are working with the club and the Crown Prosecution Service to identify the culprits.Ch Supt Matthew Greening said: “A few idiots who like to be considered to be Saints fans seem intent on finding any chance they can to attack rival fans even without any provocation or reason.”We’ve had some nasty incidents at recent games and working with the club we are going to stop it.”We know who many of these people are and we are going after them. We’ll charge them with crimes where the evidence exists or work with the club to secure court or club bans against them.”One of the games being looked at is the match on Saturday 19 September against Yeovil.Soon after the game at about 1700 BST a man, 38, and a 17-year-old boy were attacked at the Six Dials junction in the city.Several men kicked and punched the victims to the ground and repeatedly kicked and stamped on them.Five people have already been arrested over the incident and released on bail.Police are still hunting three men captured on CCTV and are asking for anyone with information to contact them.

Fans Ejected For ‘Taking The Mickey’
Footbo
21 October 2009

John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood is arguably the best known football fan in England. Not only does he follow Pompey week in, week out but – as you might already have guessed – he even changed his name by deed poll just in case you couldn’t work out who he supported. But news reaches us that on Saturday he was thrown out, along with five or six other Pompey fans, during his team’s home game with Spurs. And the reason given to Westwood for his eviction? “Taking the Mickey out of the stewards.”That’s right – not swearing, not pitch encroachment, certainly not violence. Taking the Mickey. Call the cops!As most will already know Portsmouth’s weekend tie saw ex-manager Harry “I’m Portsmouth ‘til I die” Redknapp returning to Fratton Park for the first time since his move to Spurs. Given that this was the second time he’d jumped ship from the club, the first time to Southampton lest we forget, the Pompey faithful are understandably less than happy with Harry. So a few fans got together and produced posters with ‘Judas!’ written across an image of Redknapp. They sold them at a few local pubs for a quid a pop with all profits going to local charity the Tom Prince Cancer Trust. Now let’s not forget chants of ‘Judas!’ have echoed across football grounds for decades – this is a word with a fine tradition among supporters! It’s a tongue-in-cheek insult that Redknapp is more than capable of taking on the chin. No one really thinks Redknapp is Judas Iscariot. Judas chose money over loyalty while Redknapp left Portsmouth for the second time in four years. We can’t see the similarity at all.The stewards and police at Fratton Park were less than amused though.During the first half Westwood’s group held up one of the posters they’d smuggled in. Stewards spotted it and demanded they give it up but it quickly disappeared only to reappear once our yellow jacketed friends had moved on. This is repeated a few more times before stewards swoop on the group and eject Westwood from the stadium where they tell him he’s been kicked out for “taking the Mickey.”In a show of support and defiance towards the end of the game those around Westwood pass round the picture again, are spotted on camera, and chucked out as well. It’s a worrying trend as more and more stewards seem to be dictating what is or isn’t morally acceptable. No one’s condoning racism, homophobia, or the type of insults Redknapp says he received to his phone. Those people are nuts, we don’t want them near the game, and they deserve whatever punishment they get.But calling someone Judas – is that really unacceptable? Of course not, it’s just banter and as soon as you put a stop to that you kill off one of the main reasons why people go to games. Winding up the opposition, a few beers, and a bit of crack with your mates. As long as it’s within the law why should it be up to stewards to decide what is or isn’t morally acceptable? How sterile do Pompey want their ground to be? This is a club famed for its atmosphere after all – if they’re not careful they might just alienate the very people who make it in the first place.Clashes between Pompey’s more boisterous supporters and stewards at Fratton Park have been a running theme over the past couple of years. We hear that the Portsmouth FC hierarchy is meeting with the club’s fans over the next few days to talk about Saturday’s events and previous stewarding issues. This is a step in the right direction and credit to the club for that.Let’s hope common sense prevails and the Pompey faithful can get back to supporting their team without having to worry about whether a steward thinks the joke is on them.

Five-year ban for hooligan
Express and Star
21 October 2009

HILLMAN TS 20A Walsall FC hooligan with a three-year history of public nuisance has been banned from attending matches for five years by Solihull Magistrates’ Court.

Jake Hillman, aged 20, followed the club around the country with friends calling themselves the Swift Young Casuals, stirring up violence.Hillman, who West Midlands Police say was also in Birmingham during riots last month, was a public nuisance at matches.Magistrate Sally Derry told Hillman she found his behaviour with his 20 to 25 friends appalling.West Midlands Police applied for the ban – a civil rather than criminal matter – and Hillman consented to it at Solihull yesterday.Hillman, of Speechley Drive, Rugeley, said: “Since the beginning of the summer I have made a conscious effort to stay away from that sort of scene and distance myself from those sorts of people.”Ms Derry said the ban from any football match in England and Wales would be set at the maximum of five years.Pc David Mapp described Hillman’s antics as organised violence.“I am pleased with the outcome of the hearing and it’s certainly going to put this group to bed,” he said after the case at Solihull.
