Hearts and Hibs fans to be segregated for big trip to Glasgow for Scottish Cup Final

HIBS and Hearts fans heading to next month’s Scottish Cup final will be kept apart.

Police and rail chiefs are drawing up plans which will see supporters travelling west to Hampden packed on to separate trains. A booze ban on trains is also being considered.

British Transport Police said their top priority was to make sure the event was enjoyable for 50,000 supporters heading to the first all-Edinburgh cup final since 1896.

Their spokesman said: “We have vast experience of policing the transit of football supporters across Scotland.

“Our officers are going to ensure that a small minority will not be able to spoil the enjoyment of a wonderful day out to the Scottish Cup final for those who are a credit to their respective teams.”

ScotRail will lay on extra trains on May 19.

It is understood rival fans travelling from Edinburgh will be ushered on to separate services at the capital’s Waverley and Haymarket stations.

One set of supporters will travel from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central while the others head to Glasgow Queen Street.

Fans arriving at Queen Street will get a police escort to Central for their segregated train to Mount Florida, a short walk from Hampden.

The Strathclyde and Lothian and Borders forces said they will meet rail and council chiefs to hammer out security plans.

Police arrest warning over fans taking flares and smoke bombs to football matches

DOGS specially trained to find smoke bombs and flares will be used at a football game this weekend as police warned anyone taking these items to a match would be arrested.

It comes after “a number” of incidents over the season involving smoke bombs and flares being set off during matches.

Strathclyde Police have now issued a warning that anyone caught with any of the items will be denied entry to the game and arrested.

Chief Inspector Kenny Swan, match commander, said: “Over the course of this football season, there have been a number of incidents where smoke bombs or flares have been set off during the matches. This leads to obvious safety issues.

“On Sunday, Strathclyde Police officers will be in attendance with the dogs that have been trained to detect the smell of the powder used in both flares and smoke bombs.

“Anyone caught in possession of these items will not only be denied entry to the stadium but will also be arrested.

“I would urge people to act responsibly and not bring these items to the ground.”

Rangers fans in Hampden march to protest against transfer embargo

Supporters incenced by SFA’s imposition of a 12-month ban on player registration.

28 April 2012 10:25 GMT

Rangers fans will protest outside Hampden on Saturday against a 12-month transfer ban imposed on the club by the Scottish Football Association (SFA).

The Ibrox club was handed the sanction, along with a £160,000 fine, after a judicial panel set up by Scottish football’s governing body found it guilty of five charges in relation to their finances and the appointment of Craig Whyte as chairman.

Fans have been incensed at the transfer ban and manager Ally McCoist said the embargo could “kill” the club.

Rangers Fans Unite said the march is being held against the “unfair, draconian and unsporting punishments meted out to Rangers FC and its fans because of the behaviour of Craig Whyte”.

The march will begin at Queens Park at 1.30pm and end inside Hampden stadium where the crowd will be addressed by former Rangers player Sandy Jardine.

He said: “Since the club has gone into administration the fans have been magnificent in their support of the club and the rally gives the fans an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to saving our beloved Rangers from the proposed sanctions.”

The demonstration will be policed and Chief Superintendent Andy Bates is appealing for a peaceful protest.

He said: “We understand that passions are running high at the moment and appreciate that people feel the need to demonstrate their feelings.

“My message to the public is to come along, protest peacefully and be mindful of the people who work and live in the communities.”

Mr Jardine added: “It is important to stress that everyone involved in this procession acts in a responsible manner to represent the club in the best possible light.”

Yesterday, two takeover bids were submitted to the Rangers’ administrators Duff and Phelps.

One is from the Blue Knights – fronted by former Ibrox director Paul Murray – and the other is from American businessman Bill Miller.

Both bids are subject to conditions with the Blue Knights seeking a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) with creditors, and Mr Miller’s bid depending on the outcome of further potential sanctions from the football authorities.
