Mario Balotelli should have been sent off, says Harry Redknapp

Balotelli should have been sent off – Redknapp

Mario Balotelli should have been sent off for “blatantly” kicking Scott Parker in the head during the 3-2 defeat by Manchester City, according to Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp.

Balotelli later gave City a dramatic victory with an injury-time penalty.

The incident went unpunished by referee Howard Webb and came after the 21-year-old Italian had been booked.

I think you’ve got to give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s not looking at Parker. Looking at his left leg, it’s actually off the ground. I know it looks bad but no-one can possibly tell

“Having looked at it, I do [think he should have been sent off],” Redknapp said.

The Football Association has not commented on the incident.

Balotelli, who was introduced as a second-half substitute, got involved in a tangle with Parker during the second half.

His initial contact appeared accidental but a second seemed to involve a deliberate movement of the foot towards Parker.

“The first one could have been an accident, but on the second one he’s backheeled him straight in the head,” Redknapp said.

“It is not the first time he has done that and I am sure it won’t be the last.

 BBC Sport football pundit

I think he stamps on him. When you hit the ground you don’t stamp and there’s a definite stamp there. The referee is five yards away. I think he should have given him a red card

“I am the last person to talk about getting people sent off and what they should and shouldn’t do.

“But it is blatant. He reacts to challenges like that at times. Scott has got a cut on his head.”

Redknapp’s anger was increased when Balotelli scored the late penalty that maintained City’s lead at the top of the Premier League and damaged Spurs’s own title hopes after he was fouled by Ledley King.

Following defeat at Etihad Stadium – just their second in the Premier League since August – Tottenham are eight points adrift of leaders City.

City opened up a two-goal lead courtesy of Samir Nasri and Joleon Lescott but Spurs responded through Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale before Balotelli’s decisive late intervention in the closing seconds.

Redknapp felt Balotelli should not have been on the pitch to take the kick and added: “It is up to their manager [Roberto Mancini] to deal with it.

Balotelli might win Man City the title but there’s a danger his unpredictability could potentially lose it for them

“I have got my own opinions but I don’t like people kicking other people in the head on football pitches. I don’t think it’s wrong to say that.

“Why you should backheel someone in the head when they are lying on the floor is beyond me. It’s not a nice thing to do.”

Manchester City coach David Platt, standing in for Mancini at the post-match press conference, said he had not seen a replay of the incident.

Platt said: “I never saw anything live and there was nothing from the players live either. Until we have seen it we cannot really comment.

“What we are aware of from the last month is that different TV angles can show different things.”

Emmanuel Adebayor: Nine goals, 189 mins per goal

Luis Suarez: Five goals, 293 mins per goal

Sunday’s incident was the latest in a long line of controversies since Balotelli joined City in a £24million deal from Inter Milan in the summer of 2010.

The Italy striker arrived with a reputation, having fallen out with then Inter manager Jose Mourinho and angered fans by being photographed in an AC Milan shirt.

He managed 10 goals in his first season in England but was sent off twice.

As well as being dismissed in his third Premier League appearance after scoring twice in a 2-0 win at West Brom, he was given an early red card as City were knocked out of the Europa League by Dynamo Kiev in March 2011.

In his first year in England, he claimed that Lionel Messi was the only player in the world better than him, clashed with team-mate Jerome Boateng in training and also threw a dart at a youth-team player.

Balotelli attempted to score with a backheel when clean through on goal in a friendly with LA Galaxy last July, and argued with Mancini after being immediately substituted.

Balotelli: The bad

Clint Hill (QPR): 3 yellow cards, 1 red card, 142.8 mins per card

Ashley Richards (Swansea): 4 yellow cards, 143 mins per card

MARIO BALOTELLI: 3 yellow cards, 1 red card, 146.8 mins per card

Craig Bellamy (Liverpool): 4 yellow cards, 160.5 mins per card

Michel Salgado (Blackburn): 4 yellow cards, 163.9 mins per card

Mancini claimed the forward has calmed down after an impressive start to the current season.

Between September and December he scored 11 goals in 14 appearances, including two in a 6-1 win at Manchester United, which came just hours after he escaped unhurt when a firework was set off inside his home.

He was also sent off after coming off the bench in the after coming off the bench in the 1-1 draw at Liverpool in November, and Balotelli’s statistics this season reflect his performances.

The striker averages fewer minutes per goal than any other player in the Premier League, but only two players have been shown cards more often than Balotelli – relative to how much time they have spent on the pitch.

Arsene Wenger hits back after abuse from Arsenal fans

Oxlade-Chamberlain substitution didn’t work – Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has defended his decision to replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with Andrey Arshavin during the 2-1 defeat by Manchester United.

Some Arsenal fans booed when Oxlade-Chamberlain, who helped create Robin van Persie’s equaliser, was taken off.

“I’ve been a manager for 30 years and have made 50,000 substitutions. I don’t have to justify every one,” he said.

Arsenal trail fourth-placed Chelsea by five points in the Premier League race for Champions League qualification.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was one of the brighter elements of Arsenal’s performance at the Emirates.

The 18-year-old, making his first Premier League start, set up Van Persie during a period when Arsenal had begun to dominate.

“I can understand that the fans are upset about the substitution, especially when it doesn’t work, but he had started to fatigue,” Wenger said of his decision to substitute the former Southampton winger.

“He was sick in the week. Arshavin is captain of the Russia national team. You have an 18-year-old kid making his first Premier League start and a player who’s captain of his country and they are querying the substitution?”

Asked how the defeat affected his team, Wenger said it was a match Arsenal “couldn’t afford to lose” before adding: “It leaves us in a very difficult position.”

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson felt his side deserved the victory which keeps them three points behind leaders Manchester City.

“I felt eventually we were the better side,” he said. “Credit to the players at the back, who did a great job.

“We rode our luck a bit but on the counter-attack I thought we could have scored more goals.”

Asked about the pursuit of City, he said: “It’s going to be hard for both of us to collapse.”

Earlier on Sunday, City beat third-placed Tottenham 3-2 after a Mario Balotelli penalty deep into injury time.

The result left Spurs five points behind United and eight adrift of City, with 16 matches remaining.

Ferguson added: “It was a really disappointing result for Spurs – they deserved better but football’s a funny game.

“Come March and April you never know what’s going to happen. At the moment we’ve got a few points clear, the both of us.”

United’s win came at a cost as Phil Jones was carried off on a stretcher after 15 minutes with ankle ligament damage.

In addition, Nani left the Emirates in a protective boot after going off injured in the second half, Wayne Rooney was hobbling at the final whistle and Michael Carrick suffered a sore hamstring.

The injury to Jones is particularly worrying for United as they were without Rio Ferdinand, who missed the game with a suspected back injury, and Nemanja Vidic, who is out for the rest of the season following knee surgery.

Ferguson is also without Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Ashley Young, Michael Owen and Darren Fletcher.

“It’s not good news for us,” Ferguson said. “I think Jones will be out for a few weeks – it’s ankle ligaments.

“Carrick was feeling his hamstring in the second half and he just had to sit in the middle of the pitch.”

A key figure in United’s victory was winger Antonio Valencia, who headed the first goal and created the winner with a mazy run.

“He was absolutely fantastic; he was really in top form,” Ferguson said of the former Wigan man.

“In the last few weeks he’s really come into his game. He’s got over the bad injury he had last season and he’s getting better all the time.”

Ibrox mayhem as police charge brawling football thugs at subway station

football thugs, Ibrox

SHOCKED football fans told yesterday how they were caught in 15 minutes of mayhem outside Ibrox as Aberdeen casuals clashed with Rangers supporters.

One said: “It was the worst violence I’ve seen in years. I thought we’d heard the last of football casuals, but evidently not.”

Mounted police were called in and CS spray and batons were used after fighting erupted outside Ibrox subway station near the stadium 20 minutes before Saturday’s match.

Fans threw punches and hurled bottles and pieces of wood. Two police officers were injured and two people were arrested.

Witnesses said the trouble started when 30 to 40 Aberdeen casuals came out of the subway station on Copland Road and began baiting Rangers fans heading to the game.

The yobs had apparently boarded the train in the west end of Glasgow to avoid being segregated by police monitoring stations in the city centre.

A Rangers fan who saw the violence told the Record: “I knew something was afoot when I came out of the subway.

“There was a bunch of Aberdeen fans emerging right into the thick of the Rangers fans.

“They were all psyched up and immediately shouting for Rangers fans to come ahead.

“There were hundreds of fans and quite a few did ‘come ahead’ before the police had time to make any proper response.

“It went off for about 15 minutes and a few people took some punches.

“One tiny WPC got decked by one of the mounted police and a few fans were hit by batons as police tried to disperse the crowd.”

Another Rangers fan, posting on the Follow Follow website, said: “This is the most serious football violence I’ve been caught up in.”

The fan claimed the Aberdeen casuals started throwing “table legs” after they were baton-charged by police, and he was struck by one of the missiles.

Other, unsubstantiated, reports on Follow Follow claimed that people with “London accents” were involved in the disturbance.

Some posters claimed Spurs hooligans had travelled north to link up with the Aberdeen casuals.

A third Rangers fan described the fight as “the biggest, in terms of numbers, I have seen for a while at a game”.

He claimed to have heard men who ran from a nearby pub to get involved shouting “ICF” – a reference to the Inter City Firm gang of Rangers hooligans.

The fan added: “Three police on horses tried to get in between both set of fans and were swinging batons at anyone.”

A police spokeswoman said: “At around 1440 hours, prior to the match, we received reports of a disturbance between rival fans outside Ibrox Underground.

“Officers, including mounted branch, were immediately on the scene and quickly got the situation under control.

“Two men, aged 23 and 42, were arrested and detained in police custody.

“A male officer received a suspected broken hand and a female officer suffered a leg injury.”

The two arrested fans are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court this morning.

Chelsea racism claim: Man arrested

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are searching for a number of other people in connection with the incident.

The force said it was alerted to an incident on the 16:00 GMT train from Norwich to London Liverpool Street.

Chelsea has pledged to take action against any fan proved to be involved in racist chanting.

The arrested man, who has not been named, was detained on Sunday and is being held in custody, BTP said.

Club concern

“It is alleged that some individuals were involved in racist chanting,” the force said in a statement.

“British Transport Police has contacted the individual concerned who made the allegation and an investigation is ongoing.”

Chelsea said it was concerned to have heard that a “small number of fans” had been involved in the alleged incident.

“We are working to help the relevant authorities identify those responsible and will take the strongest possible action should these allegations prove to be true,” it said in a statement on its website.
