Andre Villas-Boas says he doesn’t need help at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has dismissed suggestions he needs help at Stamford Bridge.

Former Blues boss Guus Hiddink has been linked with a return to the club after he left his post with Turkey last week.

But Villas-Boas said: “I don’t agree [that I need help.] I don’t solve problems on my own, I solve problems with my group of people and my group of players.

“It’s a situation of life and death in that Champions League group”

Andre Villas-Boas

“I just hold on to my self-belief and the belief of my players.”

Chelsea conceded a last-minute goal in Germany in midweek as Bayer Leverkusen inflicted a fourth defeat in the last seven games.

The Blues have been left needing a win against Valencia in their final Champions League group game next week to guarantee qualification and Villas-Boas admits that the pressure is on.

“It’s a situation of life and death in that group,” he said.

ROMAN ABRAMOVICH’S CHELSEA MANAGERS

  • Claudio Ranieri, July 2003*-May 2004
  • Jose Mourinho, June 2004-September 2007
  • Avram Grant, September 2007-May 2008
  • Luiz Felipe Scolari, July 2008-February 2009
  • Guus Hiddink, February-May 2009
  • Carlo Ancelotti, June 2009-May 2011
  • Andre Villas-Boas, June 2011-present

*Abramovich bought the club in July 2003; Ranieri had been manager since September 2000

“We expect Leverkusen to do their job against Genk and qualify first. Then it’s either Chelsea or Valencia in the Champions League last 16.”

The 34-year-old has seen his side fall 12 points behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after a poor run of form but is confident that he retains the full backing of owner Roman Abramovich as he attempts to keep the club on track.

Asked if he has the backing of Abramovich, he said: “Yes.

“The spotlight is something that doesn’t disturb me. It is something that doesn’t disturb me whatsoever.

“It has an obvious knock-on effect but that’s the manager’s job, to motivate and inspire players. We need to find the right emotional stimulus plus the right balance in terms of what we do to get the results we want.

“But we have not had critical meetings, there is no animosity, not insults here and there, no critique whatsoever regarding what we are doing, no doubts whatsoever regarding what we are doing.”

Villas-Boas has also urged his side to emulate Manchester United’s ability to close out matches after seeing them concede another late goal in Leverkusen.

Glen Johnson scored a late winner for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last Sunday and three of Chelsea’s recent defeats have come late on.

Villas-Boas added: “There is the so-called Fergie time and Man United seems very successful in making the most out of that time.

“In football, you just have to get the focus right in those last minutes.”

Ally McCoist keen on new faces at Rangers

The manager reveals he is prepared for players coming in or going out of Ibrox in January.

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has said he would like to add to his squad in the January transfer window.

At his regular Friday media conference, the manager said that he has identified some players and was hopeful of making signings.

Asked if he had been given a clear budget, he said: “We’ll find out in the very near future. There’s obviously players we would like to bring in but we’ll see.

“It’s a good bit away yet but obviously we’re getting ourselves ready for it.

“Like any other club, we don’t know what’s going to happen in terms of players in or players out but it’s fair to say that if there is going to be movement then we’ll be ready for it.”

Rangers’ financial situation has been the subject of much speculation recently and the club is currently in dispute over a tax bill with HMRC that Rangers owner Craig Whyte has admitted could make administration a possibility. McCoist explained that he had spoken with Whyte about what funds would be available to him to strengthen the squad while the tax case is still undecided.

“Craig and I have spoken on numerous occasions,” he said. “If a player comes up, is available and we fancy, if we would like to sign him then I would go to Craig and we’ll discuss it.”

The manager said he was not worried about bids coming in for any of his players, stating that every club faced the possibility of fending off bids for stars. With Rangers having rejected bids for Nikica Jelavic in the summer, he was asked if the club would consider selling him if another bid was received in January.

“We’re no different from any other club who could receive offers for all their playing staff,” McCoist said. “We would treat that as any other manager and club would do.”

Fans’ tribute to former Motherwell player Phil O’Donnell to be unveiled

The 35-year-old midfielder died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match at Fir Park in 2007.

A memorial is being unveiled to former Motherwell footballer Phil O’Donnell, nearly four years after he collapsed during a match and died.

The Motherwell Supporters Trust is unveiling the fans’ tribute at the club’s Fir Park stadium in front of players, staff and members of the player’s family.

O’Donnell, who was the team’s captain, suffered a fatal cardiac arrest towards the end of the match against Dundee United on December 29, 2007. He left a wife and four children.

The new artwork, a stainless steel number 10 incorporating the word “legend”, was designed by the Gorbals Art Project and is being erected on the north wall of the Phil O’Donnell stand.

The tribute has been paid for by funds raised by the Motherwell Supporters Trust at a series of fundraising events.

Former team-mate Keith Lasley said it would be an emotional tribute to the “inspirational” captain.

He said: “It’s an inspiration and a really nice touch with the memorial on the stand, and well deserved. Phil is always going to be seen as a legend round about here.

“It was a real privilege to play alongside him and class him as a friend and team-mate.”

No trouble in Naples? Manchester City fan reveals he was knifed by thugs after Champions League match

A Manchester City fan has called on European football’s governing body to investigate after he was stabbed in Naples.

Chris Taggart, from Blackley, suffered a deep wound when an Italian thug plunged a knife into his side following the Champions League match against Napoli.

Student Chris, 19, said he was stabbed as he tried to help his father when they were set upon by blade-wielding hooligans.

He told the M.E.N. of the terrifying moment scores of armed thugs emerged from the darkness to ambush them. And he claimed they were only saved when an undercover police officer armed with a gun intervened.

Italian police said there was no disorder at the match after they launched a huge security operation. But Chris said their claim was ‘nonsense’ and ‘dangerous’.

Now he wants Uefa to step in to make sure there is no repeat at future matches involving the Italian club.

Worried City officials wrote to the 800 fans who made the trip after visiting supporters were slashed on previous visits.

They asked Blues fans to gather at the port and to use coaches laid on to take them to and from the ground.

But Chris said that when they were dropped off after the match, which City lost 2-1, their police escort abandoned them.

He said: “None of us had any colours on show and we were keeping ourselves to ourselves.

“All of a sudden two blokes ran out of an alley with knives. One went to stab my dad in the back so I’ve run over and hit him and as he was going down he has stabbed me in my side.

“Loads of them came out waving knives on mopeds then, shouting ‘Manchester, Manchester’ and everyone tried to leg it. It was bizarre. A car then stopped in the middle of this and a bloke got out of it with a gun in his hand. It turns out he was an undercover police officer and all the Italians ran off.

“I was taken to hospital and it was pretty deep and near my kidney but it was alright.”

Chris added: “People need to know that this is what it’s like when you to Napoli. If United or anyone else goes they need to know it’s not what the Italian police have been saying.

Reports before the match claimed that another City fan, hospitalised in Sorrento, had fallen over and banged his head. But pal and fellow Blues supporter David Lingard, 32, from Openshaw, said the victim was actually beaten unconscious with a bottle after they were ambushed outside a bar

Nobody from the Italian police was available for comment. Uefa declined to comment.

The game had a designated security officer, which is not always the case, and meetings were held to try and pre-empt trouble. Additional stewards and police were on duty.
