BAYER LEVERKUSEN-CHELSEA 2-1

Chelsea players, including Frank Lampard (centre) at the final whistle in Leverkusen Chelsea’s defeat means they face a winner-takes-all match against Valencia

Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League are in the balance after a late winner gave Bayer Leverkusen a 2-1 win in Germany.

The Blues knew victory would see them through and they looked in good shape after Didier Drogba’s neat finish.

But substitute Eren Derdiyok headed Leverkusen level with 17 minutes to go.

In the final minute Manuel Friedrich headed in to leave the Blues needing a goalless draw or win against Valencia in two weeks’ time to progress.

It was a cruel blow for Chelsea, who had done enough to claim at least a draw from this match, but are now left to face a nerve-jangling final Group E matchday encounter with the Spanish side, who put seven goals past Genk on Wednesday.

Chelsea came into the game having lost three of their previous four league matches, leading to suggestions that manager Andre Villas-Boas was under pressure, only months after Roman Abramovich paid £13.3m to acquire his services from Porto.

But while not truly impressive, and despite the result, this was a much improved performance from those three defeats.

Gone was the ill-discipline that marred the loss at QPR, there was none of the suicidal defending that cost them against Arsenal and they were more composed and fluent than at any point during the defeat by Liverpool.

In Daniel Sturridge they had the best player on the pitch, particularly after the match had settled down midway through the first half.

The young England striker was central to everything positive about the Blues in the final third, firstly narrowly over-hitting a through-ball for Juan Mata before getting it spot on second time round to feed in Drogba, who subsequently missed from a tight angle after rounding the keeper.

Leverkusen were left to rely on their former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack in his 100th European game and he nearly delivered before the break with a header from a corner that hit the bar.

But Sturridge was not to be out-shone and early in the second half he provided an inch perfect pass to Drogba, who held off Friedrich before slotting a neat finish into the bottom corner on the turn.

The Blues almost extended their lead a minute later but Frank Lampard headed straight at keeper Bernd Leno from close range following Drogba’s nod-on.

That proved something of a turning point as Leverkusen, off the back of the reprieve, seized control of the match.

Stefan Kiessling served warning to the visitors with a header straight at Cech from a Gonzalo Castro cross before substitute Derdiyok was found in plenty of space at the back post by Sidney Sam to head home an equaliser.

Chelsea had a penalty appeal waved away when Drogba fell under a challenge from Friedrich and the Ivory Coast striker volleyed wide soon after as the game appeared destined to end in a draw.

However, with injury time signalled, Friedrich won the game for the home side, rising to plant a header in off the bar from Castro’s corner.

Arsenal   2 – 1   Borussia Dortmund

Arsenal captain Robin van Persie Van Persie’s double means he has scored 17 goals this season

Robin van Persie’s golden spell of form continued as he struck twice to beat Borussia Dortmund and send Group F winners Arsenal into the Champions League knockout stage for the 12th successive season.

Van Persie was the beneficiary of fine work by Alex Song to head in his 16th goal of the season four minutes after the interval and wrapped up the win with a simple finish four minutes from time.

Shinji Kagawa pulled a goal back for Borussia with virtually the last kick of the game, but by then Van Persie had already done enough to secure a decisive three points.

Arsenal were made to work hard for victory by the in-form Bundesliga side, but Van Persie was their match-winner again and Marseille’s defeat at home by Olympiakos means they will progress as group winners.

Wenger praises Van Persie after double

The Netherlands international has now scored 31 goals in his last 34 games for Arsenal as he leads their recovery from a troubled start to the season by ensuring they are the first of the Premier League quartet into the next stage of the Champions League.

Arsene Wenger’s side were never allowed to display their trademark fluency but Arsenal did what was required to move into the last 16 – and crucially ensured their place at the top of their group.

Arsenal named an unchanged team after their win at Norwich City – as did Borussia after their fine win at Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich at the weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were well-organised and confident, denying Arsenal possession and showing attacking ambition of their own given the opportunity, but Borussia’s progress stalled after suffering two injury problems in swift succession midway through the first half.

Sven Bender was taken off on a stretcher after he was accidentally kicked in the face by Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen before Mario Gotze, the new teenage star of German football, limped off after failing to recover from an early collision with Song.

Arsenal were not able to take immediate advantage of Borussia’s reshuffle and Robert Lewandowski gave keeper Wojciech Szczesny an anxious moment with a 20-yard effort that was just wide

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has scored 15 of his 17 Champions League goals at home

Theo Walcott was providing Arsenal’s moments of danger, forcing Borussia keeper Roman Weidenfeller to block at his feet from Van Persie’s pass before his inviting cross in first-half stoppage time was clutched with the Gunners’ in-form captain waiting to pounce.

Szczesny was forced into action to save from Kagawa seconds after the restart before Arsenal finally made the breakthrough from the most inevitable source.

Song deserves huge credit for a surging run and fine delivery that offered Van Persie the opportunity to stretch and head past Weidenfeller.

Gervinho should have doubled Arsenal’s advantage on the hour when he was set clear by Aaron Ramsey, but his attempt to round Weidenfeller betrayed a lack of confidence and the chance escaped.

It was the Ivorian’s last chance to make an impact as he was soon replaced by Yossi Benayoun – and any possible late jitters were settled by Van Persie’s second.

Vermaelen flicked on Mikel Arteta’s corner and Van Persie was perfectly placed to sweep home the simplest of finishes, with Kagawa’s late strike little consolation for the visitors.

Sone Aluko set for Rangers move in 24 hours

STV understands a compensation fee with Aberdeen is close to being settled.

STV has learned that Sone Aluko is set to clinch a move to Rangers within the next 24 hours after negotiations over Aberdeen’s compensation claim for the player reached an advanced stage on Wednesday evening.

Aluko has impressed since joining the Scottish champions on trial over a week ago and the Nigerian international’s representatives agreed terms with Rangers on Tuesday, with the Ibrox club offering the player a deal until the end of the season, while having the option to extend his contract for a further two years.

Although Aluko is a free agent, his former club, Aberdeen, insist they are due training compensation for three of the four years he spent at Pittodrie.

Under the SPL’s regulations, the Dons can ask for costs for developing the player up until the age of 21, a claim which can be made up until the end of the season in which a player’s 23rd birthday falls, which in Aluko’s case is the end of the 2011/12 season.

Following negotiations between both clubs and the player’s representatives on Wednesday, STV understands a compensation agreement is close to being settled.

If Aluko had moved to a club outside of Scotland, Aberdeen would have been entitled to claim for £180,000 in training compensation. There is no comparative figure for transfers which occur within Scotland.

The winger is now set to be paraded as Ally McCoist’s latest signing imminently and could go straight into the squad for this weekend’s game against Kilmarnock.
