Kyle Lafferty scores for Rangers against Hibernian

Lafferty fires home the winner for Rangers in the 68th minute

Kyle Lafferty pounced on a Gregg Wylde cross to put Rangers into a commanding position at the top of the table as they edged out Hibernian at Ibrox.

Keeper Graham Stack was impressive for the visitors, but he fouled Lafferty to hand Rangers a 45th-minute penalty that Steven Whittaker’ blazed over the bar.

Paul Hanlon bulleted a header wide for Hibs and Allan McGregor saved at the feet of Junior Agogo as Hibs pressed.

But, in 68 minutes, Lafferty tapped the ball home to make the breakthrough.

Rangers went into the match knowing a win would extend their lead over title rivals Celtic into double figures, but prior to kick-off Ibrox coach Kenny McDowall told BBC Scotland there had been no mention of this in the home dressing-room.

Hibs might have wished the fixture schedule had been kinder, with Ibrox a difficult venue for any Scottish Premier League team wishing to build its fragile confidence.

Yet Colin Calderwood’s side held firm in the first half, though they rarely threatened McGregor’s home goal.

Wylde and Steven Davis were the players showing most guile in the middle of the park and the former had two good chances to break the deadlock.

Steven Whittaker holds his head in his hands after missing a penalty for Rangers against Hibernian Whittaker was off target with his first-half penalty attempt

Wylde fired an effort that Stack palmed away for a corner, then Nikica Jelavic, Rangers’ centre-forward, teed up his young team-mate, but he hammered his effort over the bar.

And the Croat had a similar fate when, after much deliberation, he ballooned a free-kick over the Hibs crossbar as Rangers pressed for the opener.

On that theme, a Wylde cross had Stack grasping thin air before Hanlon made a timely intervention to head the ball clear and soon Hibs had a chance of their own.

In 35 minutes, the Leith side broke quickly through Ivan Sproule and the Hibs winger drew a save by McGregor.

As half-time approached, the action reverted to the Hibs goal, with Stack racing from his line to narrow the angle to block a Jelavic shot, then the goalie bringing down Kyle Lafferty to concede a penalty.

Up stepped Whittaker, but the former Hibee blasted his spot-kick over the bar and trudged off at half-time with his head down.

Hibs’ counter-attacking threat revealed itself when Sproule advanced early in the second period, but his pass for on-form striker Garry O’Connor, in an excellent position, was heavy.

As the home fans squirmed, Hanlon headed Martin Scott’s cross wide of the near post when he ought to have hit the target, then McGregor saved bravely in a one-on-one situation with Agogo when the Ghanaian had been set up perfectly by O’Connor.

Agogo hit the loose ball into the side netting as Hibs sought their fifth goal in as many SPL away games.

That chance would haunt Hibs 10 minutes later when they failed to deal with Wylde’s dangerous cross into the box.

Jelavic was in the danger area, but the ball came through to Lafferty to knock the ball home from six yards to ease the tension at Ibrox.

Rangers had two “goals” chopped off for offside before Davis’ shot from 18 yards was saved brilliantly by the impressive Hibs keeper, but one goal was enough for the home side to stay nine points clear of Motherwell and move 10 clear of inactive Celtic.

Blackburn   0 – 4   Man City

Steve Kean’s side suffered their worst home defeat in three years

Manchester City put the Carlos Tevez saga behind them with a classy victory at Blackburn that keeps them level on points with leaders Manchester United.

City lost Sergio Aguero to a groin injury in a forgettable first half but they found top form in the second.

Mario Balotelli hit a post before Adam Johnson struck with a magnificent curling effort into the top corner.

Balotelli volleyed home, Samir Nasri hit a deflected third and Stefan Savic headed in to confirm Blackburn’s woe.

Rovers are now second-bottom of the Premier League table with four points from seven games and a goal difference of -9.

Manchester City have taken 25 of a possible 27 points in their last nine Premier League matches.

A number of their fans staged a sit-in protest at full-time to demand the dismissal of manager Steve Kean, who will meet with the club’s owners when he takes his squad to India next week.

Life looks considerably brighter for City, who join United on 19 points with a goal difference only one inferior to their rivals’ 19.

Their preparations were overshadowed by the fall-out from Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Tevez was suspended for allegedly refusing to come on as a substitute while Edin Dzeko apologised to boss Roberto Mancini after reacting angrily to being replaced.

Before the trip to Ewood Park, Mancini stated “I’m the manager, I’m in control” and he made six changes to his starting line-up – with Dzeko among those making way.

City carried little threat in the early stages and when they did work an opportunity on 10 minutes, Dzeko’s replacement Balotelli shot wastefully over the bar.

The home fans called for Kean’s dismissal and staged a sit-in protest

Apart from a perfectly-timed James Milner tackle that denied Blackburn striker Yakubu, City dominated possession but created little in the way of meaningful chances.

And their cause was not helped when Sergio Aguero limped off with a groin injury.

However, City responded positively as Balotelli curled narrowly wide and turned Pablo Zabaleta’s low cross into the side-netting.

Blackburn offered nothing going forward in the opening period and that continued after the break, encouraging City to flood forward.

The visitors began to hold a much higher line, passing and moving with greater urgency, and their reward was forthcoming.

A David Silva shot was deflected just wide and Balotelli struck the woodwork before Johnson fired into the top corner after Blackburn failed to clear a corner.

Mancini’s men were suddenly buzzing and three minutes later they doubled their lead, Balotelli getting in front of Scott Dann to volley Nasri’s cross past Paul Robinson.

Man City back to winning ways – David Platt

Nasri then got in on the act, rounding off a counter-attack with a drilled finish that deflected off Jason Lowe.

Blackburn came close to pulling one back – Morten Gamst Pedersen almost scored direct from a corner and Yakubu shot wide.

But an unmarked Savic nodded his first goal for City to complete the rout and the final whistle brought boos from the home crowd.

Man Utd   2 – 0   Norwich

Manchester United's Anderson

Anderson headed United into the lead just after the hour mark

Manchester United edged past Norwich to retain their position at the top of the Premier League.

Anderson headed in on 68 minutes before Danny Welbeck sealed the points after exchanging passes with Park Ji-sung.

The pattern of the game could have been different if Anthony Pilkington had taken one of two chances either side of United’s opener.

But the Norwich winger shot wide when clean through and saw another effort hit the post on 75 minutes.

The hosts improved in the second period and could have extended their lead via Welbeck and Wayne Rooney, who returned to the United side after a hamstring injury.

However, they were made to work for the points on a glorious afternoon in Manchester, where the counter-attacking plans of Norwich boss Paul Lambert almost came to fruition.

Ferguson impressed by Norwich

Rooney clipped the bar when he was clean through late on, while Welbeck was inches from scoring before he settled nerves inside Old Trafford three minutes from time.

The relief inside the stadium was palpable as United sealed their 19th consecutive Premier League home win, especially as the visitors caused problems on the break from the beginning.

Early on, Elliott Bennett made good progress down the right but could not find an unmarked Steve Morison, while Wes Hoolahan tested the palms of Anders Lindegaard, who was making his first Premier League start.

But once Norwich had that brief attacking flurry, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were largely camped in their opponents’ half as the Canaries concentrated on defensive duties.

United certainly had the majority of possession but they were pedestrian at times, with Darren Fletcher’s flick from a corner the closest they came to scoring in the first half.

Victory for Manchester United was their 19th consecutive home win in the Premier League

Ferguson made seven changes to the side from the 3-3 Champions League draw with Basel, in which he called his side’s defending “careless”, but after the early openings, they had little to defend against in the first half.

That changed early in the second period when Phil Jones made a great interception to stop Morison’s cross reaching Hoolahan and Jonny Evans, in for Rio Ferdinand, took the sting out of Pilkington’s effort.

Frustration began to grow within Old Trafford, not least when Pilkington was presented with the best chance of the game up to that point.

Bradley Johnson could not find his team-mate with a through ball but Antonio Valencia slipped, putting Pilkington clean through, only for the former Huddersfield man to shoot agonisingly wide.

Lambert and his backroom staff all had their heads in their hands and the Premier League newcomers were made to rue that chance minutes later.

Lambert delighted despite defeat

From substitute Ryan Giggs’ corner Jones nodded onto Rooney, who directed it towards Anderson for a close-range header to give home supporters a huge release.

That almost turned to despair soon after when Pilkington’s shot was deflected against the post by the Brazilian.

But with the game becoming more open, substitute Welbeck played in Park down the right, before receiving the return pass and sliding in for his fifth goal of the season.

United could have made it 3-0 with further chances, but Norwich’s Andrew Crofts also had a shot saved and his side can come away from this encounter with some reason to feel hard done by.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson: “They turned every counter attack into something positive, so that was a problem to deal with. But once we quickened the game up in the second half we were much better.

“We deserved to win because we had the most pressure and we tried to win the game as we always do. But even when it went to 1-0 they still had a go and opened up their game, and it became a very good game in the last 20 minutes.”

Norwich boss Paul Lambert: “I thought we were excellent, we created chances as well, but one thing about coming to places like this is if you are creating chances you have to score.

“[Anthony Pilkington’s chance] might have been the turning point but that is being harsh on him. That’s not to blame Anthony for what happened at the other end, we got caught at a corner and against a quality team like that you get punished. But we played well.”
