Jermain Defoe and Giovanni dos Santos

Defoe celebrates with Dos Santos after heading Spurs into the lead

Tottenham survived a scare as they fought back from 1-0 down to run out comfortable winners against Shamrock Rovers in the Europa League.

Rovers took an unlikely lead after the break when Stephen Rice flicked in Gary Twigg’s long-range strike.

But their lead lasted just 10 minutes before Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe both headed home in the space of two minutes to wrestle back control.

Giovani dos Santos smashed home a third five minutes later to wrap up the win.

With the north London derby to come at the weekend, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp opted to rest many of his key players, although he brought back Aaron Lennon after a month out through injury.

But with the lively Dos Santos pulling the strings behind strikers Pavlyuchenko and Defoe, Spurs controlled the first half without finding the breakthrough their dominance deserved.

Rovers keeper Richard Brush diverted Defoe’s 17th-minute effort on to the bar before Danny Rose smashed the woodwork with a looping strike.

Former Coventry trainee Brush also made wonderful saves to deny long-range efforts from Dos Santos and Pavlyuchenko, who had a header cleared off the line by Stephen O’Donnell.

Roman Pavlyuchenko scored Spurs’s first European goal at White Hart Lane in four games

And White Hart Lane was stunned when Rovers scored just five minutes after the restart in front of their away following.

A curling free-kick from Gary McCabe was palmed away by Carlo Cudicini to Twigg on the edge of the box and his effort was touched home by Rice.

Rovers’ hopes of pulling off one of the great European shocks of all time lasted just 10 minutes before Spurs finally found their scoring touch.

Dos Santos, who has often been on the fringes at Spurs since moving from Barcelona, whipped in a fantastic cross that Pavlyuchenko emphatically headed home for his first goal of the season.

And the home fans breathed a huge sigh of relief barely two minutes later when Andros Townsend’s cross was finished by Defoe.

Mexican ace Dos Santos smashed home the third five minutes later after good work from Defoe.

Former Tottenham star Rohan Ricketts came off the Rovers bench with 19 minutes to go to a warm reception from the home fans, six years after leaving the Lane.

Neil Lennon fumes over ‘disgraceful’ penalty decision

Celtic manager unhappy with referee after late penalties costs Europa League points.

30 September 2011 07:42 GMT

Neil Lennon has described a late penalty decision that handed Udinese a draw against Celtic in the Europa League as “disgraceful”.

Turkish referee Bulent Yildirim awarded the visitors the late penalty when he adjudged Gary Hooper to have fouled Neuton Sergio Piccoli in the box. Almen Abdi scored from the spot with just four minutes on the clock to cancel out Hooper’s opening goal and leave Celtic with just a point from their opening two Group I games.

Lennon said that the call was the wrong one and had robbed his side of what would have been a vital three points.

“It was a disgraceful decision,” he said. “Gary Hooper did what he could do to get out of the way.

“Ours was definitely a penalty but the referee deliberated for 20 seconds before giving it. I can’t understand that.”

Celtic had the perfect start to the match when Lars Joel Ekstrand brought down Hooper in the third minute and Ki Sung-Yueng kept his nerve to score from the spot. Though Hooper had played his part in handing his side the lead, Lennon said that following the final whistle it was the decision that went against him that occupied his mind.

“Hooper is very upset and angry as all the players are after putting so much work in to the game,” he said.

“To lose two points after a decision like that is hard to take for the players.

“Of course it will (affect our chance of qualifying). It denied us two points when we wanted to enforce our home advantage.

“They can take a lot of confidence from the way they played tonight but at the end of the day if the referee does his job properly we win the game.”

Celtic travel to play Rennes in their next group game on October 20.

Football fans arrested in dawn raids after match violence

The supporters were arrested at various addresses across Edinburgh and the Lothians in connection with violent clashes between fans.

Eleven football fans have been arrested in dawn raids across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Lothian and Borders Police made the arrests and are following positive lines of enquiry for two others after the raids on Wednesday morning.

It is part of an operation to catch those who were involved in violence on the day of the Hibs versus Sunderland friendly last month.

Football fans arrested in dawn raids after match violence

Fighting broke out near the Omni Centre before the game at Easter Road on Saturday August 6. There was more violence in the Easter Road area after the match.

The men, who are aged between 17 and 44, have been charged and are due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday. They have been charged with breach of the peace and racially aggravated breach of the peace.

Two people had to be treated for serious injuries with one man treated for a head injury before the game started. Another man had to be treated for a broken rib he received in clashes near London Road after the match.

Eight arrests were made on the day of the match.

Police were acting on information from cameras on the vests of officers during the match, CCTV and other video.

The force said it would not tolerate any disorder at footballer matches.

Superintendant Donnie MacKinnon said: “While I cannot comment on these individuals, what I am very clear about is that this force will continue to fully investigate complaints regarding any anti-social and disorder, and particularly any hate crime whether associated to a sporting event or not.

“True fans attend fixtures to show support for the team they follow. There is a small minority who attend for other reasons. We will not let them spoil the enjoyment of the genuine fans. Equally we will not let them disrupt other members of the public who may be going about their business elsewhere in the city on a day of a match.”
