PAOK Salonika   0 – 0   Tottenham

Harry Kane Tottenham were denied a first-half penalty after Harry Kane was tripped in the box

Much-changed Tottenham got their Europa League group campaign underway with a spirited point at PAOK Salonika.

Spurs debutant Iago Falque had an early side-footed shot from 18 yards cleared off the line by Pablo Garcia.

Tottenham were denied a spot kick when Harry Kane was brought down and soon after PAOK defender Lino sent a retaken penalty wide of Carlo Cudicini’s goal.

Cudicini later produced a triple save before Vladimir Ivic headed against the crossbar in the last minute.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp made 10 changes to his line-up for the clash in Thessaloniki but despite the unfamiliar starting XI, his side made a lively start to the game.

Tottenham fielded a team that had six players 21 years old or under. Their average age in total was 23.

Redknapp handed a first start to Falque and the youngster, on loan from Juventus, almost got Spurs off to a flying start.

His shot from the edge of the area was cleared off the line by Garcia following Jake Livermore’s surging right-wing run.

It took the hosts a while to settle into the game with Vieirinha their most lively attacking threat, but by and large it was Tottenham who controlled the opening 45 minutes.

Forward Kane was proving a handful for the PAOK defence and after heading straight at goalkeeper Dario Kresic he was later denied a clear penalty.

His powerful run into the box was halted by Pablo Contreras but the referee booked the 18-year-old for diving rather than award a spot kick.

The decision incensed Redknapp, who moments later was left cursing that decision when Cudicini brought down Stefanos Athanasiadis to hand the home side a penalty they barely deserved.

The initial spot kick was scored by Lino, but he was forced to take it again with PAOK penalised for encroachment into the box.

And much to the relief of Cudicini and Spurs his second attempt was sent wide of the Italian keeper’s left-hand post and the score remained level.

Spurs had chances as the half came to a close with Pavlyuchenko firing a 20-yard free-kick inches too high of Kresic’s goal.

Falque was desperately unlucky at the start of the second period not to see his curling left-foot 20-yard shot find the back of the net following good strength by Roman Pavlyuchenko as Tottenham remained the most likely side to break the deadlock.

Unsurprisingly considering the searing heat in Greece, Tottenham’s play noticeably slowed while their passing became slightly erratic and the hosts started to come into the game.

Athanasiadis came desperately close to getting the first goal of the game, but he blazed over on the stretch from six yards following Dimitris Salpingidis’s driven low cross.

As the game moved into the final stages Tottenham continued to plug away, driven on by the superb Livermore and lively Falque, while Kyle Walker proved a useful outlet on the right.

Garcia went close for the hosts with 15 minutes remaining, dragging his shot wide following an enterprising run on the right.

Tottenham were then in debt to keeper Cudicini for a superb double save, first from Ivic and then from Athanasiadis.

And then in the last minute Vieirinha again forced a brilliant reaction stop from Cudicini from a tight angle before Ivic headed against the crossbar in a frantic finish to the game.

But despite the late drama Tottenham held on for a deserved point.

Dynamo Kiev   1 – 1   Stoke

Cameron Jerome Jerome’s debut goal came from Stoke’s first shot on target

Stoke were cruelly denied a victory at Dynamo Kiev when Ognjen Vukojevic equalised for the home team during injury time in the Europa League.

The hosts had the better of the first half but missed a close-range chance when Andriy Yarmolenko shot wide.

Stoke scored in the 55th minute when Ryan Shotton cut the ball back for debutant Cameron Jerome, who produced a neat, eight-yard finish.

The visitors held on until Vukojevic tapped in Yarmolenko’s cross.

Manager Tony Pulis should take credit despite the disappointment of conceding late on. He played five at the back, reducing Dynamo’s considerable threat from the channels, with all three centre-backs – Robert Huth, Ryan Shawcross and Matthew Upson – booked in a resolute display.

Stoke were happy to give their opponents the ball, confident that their defence could keep them at bay. When Jerome scored, it looked like the plan had worked perfectly but then came the late disappointment.

Once Dynamo went behind, they threatened but the home team had been restricted to long-range efforts in the first half with Andriy Shevchenko coming close and Yarmolenko shooting wide from seven yards after Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen had parried a Goran Popov shot.

The surprise Stoke goal came from their first shot on target as Shotton made a decent run then supplied Jerome. The striker took a touch and lifted the ball cleverly into the net.

Shevchenko carried on being wasteful as his team pressed forward. The former Chelsea striker volleyed over near the six-yard box in the 70th minute, after the impressive substitute Olexandr Aliyev had chipped the ball over the top.

Just a minute later, Aliyev rattled the bar from 22 yards with a powerful shot after Shevchenko had teed him up. Ideye Brown also had a close-range header stopped by Sorensen, but Dynamo’s pressure eventually paid off when Vukojevic finally prodded in.

Birmingham 1-3 Braga

Rodrigo Lima Lima’s powerful finishing troubled Birmingham and he scored the visitors’ second

Jorge Helder Barbosa’s double sealed victory for Braga as Birmingham started life in the Europa League.

Braga opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Nuno Gomes crossed for Barbosa to volley in.

It was 2-0 after 58 minutes when Gomes laid the ball back for Lima, who powerfully finished from 10 yards.

Chris Burke’s cross to the back post was tapped in by Marlon King to make it 2-1 on 72 minutes, but Carlao teed up Barbosa for the clincher.

It was a performance full of effort by Birmingham with Nathan Redmond looking excellent at times, delivering some teasing crosses, and Burke also looking dangerous when he came on.

But Braga, last year’s finalists, were always a threat going forward and deserved their win. Birmingham’s best spell came when they cut the deficit to 2-1 then pressed for an equaliser, but the Portuguese team were capable of counter-attacking fluently.

Birmingham had suffered early on as Braga started well. Goalkeeper Boaz Myhill could have done better in his attempt to stop Barbosa’s opening strike, but he could only palm the volley on to the crossbar and the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Myhill responded well to that setback and Chris Hughton’s side improved as the first half went on with Redmond having an effort saved and Adam Rooney heading over.

Against the run of play, Birmingham fell further behind. Gomes had knocked the ball back on the edge of the six-yard box and Lima smashed the ball in from 10 yards as the ball went in off the bar.

Burke brought his team back into the game with a lovely pass that was met by King, who timed his run to perfection and scored a deserved goal after a hard-working display.

Hughton’s team pushed hard for the equaliser with Redmond producing a 30-yard effort that was pushed away by Quim, but they were a beaten side when Braga broke and Carlao set up Barbosa to tuck in his second from eight yards.

Birmingham boss Chris Hughton: “I’ve no arguments with the result.

“What we saw in Braga was a team who once they got into the forward areas and close to goal, they were more clinical and showed better quality than we did.

“At 2-1 we were the team in the ascendancy, and if anybody was going to get the next goal, then it was possibly going to be us.

“But when you are playing against a side of the quality of Braga that have the experience they do, there is always the possibility of getting caught on the counter-attack, and that is what happened.”

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Celtic

Falcao nods in the opening goal at the Vicente Calderon Falcao headed Atletico Madrid into an early lead at the Vicente Calderon

Celtic’s Europa League group campaign opened with defeat as they failed to test Atletico Madrid in Spain.

Falcao took advantage of some slack marking to head the home side ahead from a third-minute corner.

Gary Hooper had an early effort blocked and, early in the second half, Ki Sung-yueng’s powerful drive had to be tipped over the bar by Thibaut Courtois.

Atletico put the game beyond Celtic when Diego ran on to Arda Turan’s cut-back to shoot home.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon can only dream of a transfer budget that could attract the likes of Falcao and Diego and the home side always appeared to have another gear as they built on the perfect start.

Not for the first time on their recent European travels, Celtic conceded a soft early goal.

A good sliding challenge from Charlie Mulgrew gave away a corner and Colombian striker Falcao ran between two defenders to powerfully head Diego’s delivery home from 10 yards.

Celtic had a great chance to draw level just a few minutes later when Hooper exchanged swift passes with stand-in skipper Beram Kayal. However, Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois rushed out to block as the striker got the ball caught under his feet.

With the visitors camped deep in their own half, Atletico were able to patiently ping the ball around but were restricted to shots from distance by some stubborn, well-organised defending.

The busy Turan fizzed an effort narrowly wide and Diego had a fierce strike beaten away by Fraser Forster.

Celtic began the second half in positive fashion, with a 35-yard thunderbolt from Ki producing a good fingertip save from Courtois.

Mulgrew then curled a free kick wide but, just as Celtic appeared to have established a foothold in the game, they fell further behind on 68 minutes.

Turan skipped away from Mark Wilson and got to the bye-line before pulling the ball back for Diego to find the bottom corner of the net with a well-placed first-time strike.

Buoyed by the cushion of a second goal, Atletico rediscovered their earlier zip and Turan was denied a goal when Forster did really well to push the Turk’s curling shot onto the junction of crossbar and post.

Celtic responded with strikes from Joe Ledley and Kayal, both rising too high to trouble Courtois.

Former Arsenal man Jose Antonio Reyes almost set up a late goal for the home side after a burst into the penalty box but Forster got a hand to Turan’s shot and Kelvin Wilson was on hand to hack the ball clear as it rolled towards the goal.
