Rushden & Diamonds

Rushden & Diamonds have been expelled from the Football Conference for financial reasons, ahead of a hearing for a winding-up petition on Monday.”The primary reason why we’ve been expelled is because of the financial issues with the winding-up petition,” said chief executive Steve Beasant.Relegated Southport earn a reprieve as Diamonds’ fate means they will stay up.Thurrock will remain in the Blue Square Bet South, while Bishop’s Stortford will move to Blue Square Bet North.Hopes of being rescued by a consortium linked in with the Glenn Hoddle Academy were dashed on Friday. And, although the club made a presentation to the Football Conference AGM concerning their status for next season, they have now lost their place in the league.”We’ve had two investment consortiums show interest in taking over the club and injecting money,” Beasant told BBC Radio Northampton.”We needed more time to get that interest confirmed.”We’ve got a business model and we had investors but the conditions put on us by the Conference made the deal impossible.”

The priority is to make sure that the club isn’t wound up on Monday

Steve Beasant Rushden & Diamonds chief executive

Beasant says that Diamonds will now aim to find a place in next season’s Zamaretto League – a drop of at least two divisions.”We’d have to make representation to them to be included, so we’ll deal with that on Monday,” he said. “But the priority is to make sure that the club isn’t wound up on Monday.”We’ve got to deal with the winding-up petition. We’re looking for an adjournment.”Cash-strapped Rushden’s financial problems have been well documented. They were fined £2,000 and docked five points last month, leading to them being demoted one place to 13th in the final Blue Square Bet Premier table.Rushden were created in 1992 when club founder Max Griggs merged Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds. He was then at the helm for 11 years, building a new home at Nene Park, during which time he took the club into the Football League in 2001.But Griggs stepped down at the age of 65 in October 2003, deciding that he has done all he could do for them.He gave the stadium and 22 acres of land to the club’s Supporters Trust in 2005.But the former owner resigned as life president in January 2007, following an argument over land.

Rangers to open talks for striker Tomer Hemed

Israel striker Tomer Hemed
Hemed (left) made his debut for Israel last weekend

Rangers will hold talks with the representatives of Israel striker Tomer Hemed over the weekend. The six foot tall 24-year-old will be out of contract with Maccabi Haifa at the end of June.Hemed was top scorer for the Israeli champions last season, with 17 goals, and made his international debut earlier this month. He started the match against Latvia last weekend and provided an assist for Yossi Benayoun in a 2-1 victory.Clubs in Italy, Spain and Belgium are also tracking the player but the lure of Champions League football may give Rangers an advantage. And it is understood Hemed has spoken to Celtic’s Beram Kayal, a former Maccabi team-mate, about a possible move to Glasgow.

Preston chief reassures fans over transfers

editorial image

Transfer target: Ipswich Town are thought to be keen on Sean St Ledger

Preston chairman Maurice Lindsay has urged fans to remain patient as the club looks to bolster the squad ahead of the forthcoming League One campaign. There have been a few murmurings of discontent and concern among the North End faithful that there has been no incoming transfer activity at Deepdale as yet over the summer.Indeed, the only bit of concrete news to come out of the club recently concerns outgoing transfers with Billy Jones’ move to Premier League West Bromwich Albion confirmed last week, while Paul Hayes seems highly likely to sign for Charlton Athletic. There may also be news of a another possible departure early next week. However, Lindsay has moved to reassure fans that while everything seems quiet on the surface, he and manager Phil Brown are paddling like mad underneath. The PNE chairman revealed that he and Brown have been in contact with a number of players and their agents since the season finished. But at the moment, with clubs still obliged to pay players coming to the end of their contracts until June 30, many clubs are keeping their cards close to their chest.Lindsay said: “I suppose you could say it’s a bit of a cat-and-mouse situation at the moment.“We are making enquiries and we have spoken to a few players and agents.“But what you find in League One, Two and the Championship, there are not many deals being done during May and the first half of June because all players are paid until June 30.“Even if you moved a player on, you are still bound to pay their salary.“I just want to reassure fans that while everything looks quiet at the moment, we are paddling like mad under the surface.”Lindsay knows that North End will be big fish next season in League One. Already, the amount of season tickets the club has sold will mean they will be in the top six of best-supported clubs. And players of smaller clubs will relish the chance to play on a stage such as Deepdale and take the scalp of Preston.Brown is all too aware of this fact and is looking for players with the necessary character to cope with that pressure.Lindsay added:“With all due respect to other clubs in League One, who – don’t get me wrong – are very capable and could quite easily kick us over, but their names are not as big as Preston North End.“They will be looking at us and thinking we are fat cats and wanting to beat us.“But we are not fat cats, we will be a young, enthusiastic and ambitious football team.”An increase in transfer activity could coincide with the return of Brown, who is due back at the club shortly from holiday.Ipswich Town have been linked once more with a move for Sean St Ledger. The Tractor Boys had a £2m bid turned down for the Republic of Ireland international during the January transfer window and they are expected to renew their interest.
