‘Great news’: Thirlwell meets fans after last season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final victory

United have reported brisk season ticket sales which has put them on target to smash the 2,000 barrier, after 1,547 fans took advantage of the early-bird discount. The club is optimistic of beating last summer’s figure of 1,924 season tickets sales and Thirwell said he and his team-mates will be pulling out all the stops to reward them with a promotion campaign. The popular Blues captain, who signed a new one-year deal after leading his side to victory in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, believes fans can help make Brunton Park a tough place for opponents to come to next season.Thirlwell said: “It’s great news that the fans are snapping up season tickets.“It goes to show a lot of people think that the manager and the lads are doing the right things and they are prepared to spend their hard-earned money to come back for a full season.“The more fans we get into Brunton Park getting behind us, the better it is. We have to produce the goods on the pitch but it is a big bonus that people are shouting for us.“Money makes the world go round and, if we want to attract better players and pay higher wages, then we need fans coming in.“Carlisle as a club won’t put itself in a position where it’s financial future is threatened and I think people appreciate that.“The teams near the top of League One tend to be the ones with the money but there is always another team like Exeter and Bournemouth that sneak in, and there’s no reason why that can’t be us.“We have made ourselves a stable League One club and we want to kick on.”The 31-year-old former Sunderland and Derby County midfielder, who is celebrating the arrival of baby daughter Lila Grace, is optimistic the addition of some experienced signings this summer can help the Blues sustain a promotion push next season.Thirlwell, a trusty ally of boss Greg Abbott, played a crucial role behind the scenes in helping youngsters like Tom Taiwo, James Berrett and Liam Noble improve and he believes they will have benefited from last season’s experience. He said: “We were a very young team last season and having a bit more experience will take the pressure off us older lads.“The likes of Tom, Bez and Nobs were very young and even though Francois Zoko is older, it was still his first season in English football.“They are great characters and they all have a lot of attributes, but they will have really benefited from the experience.“Andy Welsh will be a great addition to the team as he is a good, seasoned pro, and it will be good to have the right blend of youth and experience in the team.”Supporters who buy season tickets at discounted prices before 5pm on Friday can save more than £100 on the price of match-day admission to all 23 home League One fixtures in 2010-11. Until then, an adult season ticket will cost £405 compared to £506 for the cost of buying a £22 ticket on the day of each game.

Furious Hearts set to appeal SFA decision to dish out £100k fine for poor discipline

HEARTS were reeling last night after being hit with a record £100,000 fine for failing to control their players. The SFA handed out their biggest-ever financial punishment after the Gorgie club breached discipline standards for the seventh successive season.Hearts, who are planning to launch an appeal, learned their fate yesterday at the last ever meeting of the Hampden disciplinary board. The SFA accused Jim Jefferies’ side of ignoring several warnings after collecting 84 yellow – Ian Black got 12 by himself – and five red cards last term.A year earlier they received a £60,000 fine for 10 players dismissed and 89 booked.Ever since picking up a £5000 fine during the 2004-05 campaign for too many cards, Hearts have been given financial punishments by the SFA each year. They have been told to pay £60,000 immediately while the other £40,000 has been suspended. A sum of £20,000 has been deferred until January, when the Jambos discipline will be reviewed, with the rest carried over until the end of next season. An SFA spokesman said: “Clubs fined or warned will be monitored next season and it is expected that the required improvement will be forthcoming.”Clubs can have no cause for complaint if heed is not paid to previous fines and warnings.”It is evident that attention can be paid to such matters by clubs as several showed sufficient improvement, after being warned in January 2011, that no further action was needed.”The SFA insist Hearts have been given plenty of chances but have chosen to ignore them. The spokesman said: “Several clubs have been commended for good discipline for the second or third season in succession.”However, Hearts are outraged at the decision with the fact they halved the number of red cards from the previous season likely to form the basis of their appeal. They are the only SPL side to be fined although Kilmarnock have been issued with a warning.Previous good behaviour was taken into account for the Rugby Park club who had six players sent off and 61 cautioned.Meanwhile, six SFL clubs were fined along with 24 non-league sides. Stirling got the second-highest (£3000) while Dundee, Airdrie, Alloa, Arbroath and Montrose were also punished.Several clubs were commended including Inverness for the second successive season.

Rangers on a visit to seaside

RANGERS will play Blackpool in a pre-season friendly at Bloomfield Road next month.

Lancashire Police have approved the clash against Ian Holloway’s side for Tuesday, July 19.It’ll be Gers’ last match before they begin their defence of the SPL title four days later. The relegated Seasiders could have lost their three Scotland internationals before Gers head south.Stephen Crainey and Matt Gilks are out of contract and discussing moves away from the club.Former Gers star Charlie Adam has been linked with a £10million switch to Spurs, Liverpool or Manchester United.New Gers gaffer Ally McCoist has lined up a training camp in Germany and a trip to face Linfield at Windsor Park. But their most glamorous game has been arranged for AFTER the start of the new campaign when Gers host Chelsea on Saturday, August 6.
