Archive: Scholes looks back on his Man Utd and England career

Manchester United’s Paul Scholes has announced his retirement aged 36.Midfielder Scholes made his United debut in 1994, making 676 appearances, and will now join the coaching staff. The news came after he helped the club win a record 19th league title, the 10th of his career, and his last game was Saturday’s Champions League final loss to Barcelona.“This was not a decision I’ve taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing,” he said. The famously low key Scholes stated: “I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do and to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honour.”To have been part of the team that helped the club reach that 19th title is a great privilege.”Manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute, calling him “a truly unbelievable player.”Paul has always been inspirational to players of all ages and we know that will continue in his new role,” he added.Scholes was also held in high esteem by his fellow professionals – former world player of the year Zinedine Zidane called him “the complete midfielder” and “my toughest opponent.”Scholes is undoubtedly the greatest of his generation,” added the former France international.Sir Bobby Charlton was also a huge admirer.”Many great players have worn the shirt of Manchester United. Players I worshipped, then lost with my youth in Munich. Players like Denis Law and George Best who I enjoyed so much as team-mates and now, finally, players I have watched closely in the Ferguson era – and in so many ways Scholes is my favourite,” he said.United team-mate Rio Ferdinand said Scholes had gone “from a scoring midfielder to a dictator of the game” and “changed his game while still at top of the game”, while Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere described him as “top class” and “a great role model for any young English midfielder.”Scholes was part of United’s Class of 92, which also produced David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Gary Neville – another player who ended his United career this season.United chief executive David Gill said Scholes had “established himself as one of the greatest players to ever wear the United shirt”.In addition to winning 10 Premier League titles, Scholes was a member of the team that triumphed in the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea, but was suspended for the 1999 final win over Bayern Munich. He also won 66 England caps before retiring from international football following the Euro 2004 tournament, aged only 29, but coach Fabio Capello tried to tempt him to change his mind for last summer’s World Cup.Scholes said he would have considered a U-turn but was not given enough time to make up his mind.

Swansea fans celebrate

The victory at Wembley will be ‘remembered for many years to come

Swansea City fans will welcome home their promotion-winning heroes with an open top bus parade on Tuesday night. The Swans beat Reading 4-2 in the Championship play off final at Wembley to win a place in the Premier League.Thousands of fans are expected to turn out for the event, which will start from Swansea’s former ground, the Vetch Field, at 1830 BST.The players will also join Rod Stewart on stage at his concert at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday evening.Swansea council leader Chris Holley said promotion would be a boost to the whole of the city and surrounding area.”I really don’t think the magnitude has hit home yet,” he added.”The city has now come out of the shadows of a lot of other places and said ‘yes we are here and we have done it our own way’.”Historian and Swans’ fan Peter Stead told BBC Radio Wales promotion would benefit the wider region.”Swansea will now go on to a world stage courtesy of television and the national press.”We want quality in Wales and I think the Swans have led the way.”Swansea beat Reading in a thrilling match with a hat-trick from Scott Sinclair and a goal from Stephen Dobbie.

Swans fans were in a jubilant mood as they poured out of Wembley

It is only eight years since they beat Hull City on the final day of the 2002/03 season to prevent a drop into non-league football. But now supporters can look forward to their team taking on the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.Promotion will net the club up to £90m as they become the first Welsh club to play in the Premier League.Sport business consultant David Dick told BBC Radio Wales: “For Swansea in particular it’s a massive inflow of cash.”The minimum payments in the Premier League just in relation to the media rights is £50m.

Mouth-watering sums

“If you put that in the context of Swansea’s total turnover being about £10m you can see just on that alone it’s five times (that).”Even if they go down they then get parachute payments over a four year period totalling £48m.”Steve Pearson from the Swansea City Supporters Trust said he hoped the club would continue to live within its means.”Certainly there are some mouth-watering sums of money being talked about but I for one hope that the club will think long and hard about how to invest this money.”The longer term of the club can be secured with this promotion.”The achievement has been hailed by both First Minister Carwyn Jones and Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan as a boost not only for Swansea but also for Wales.
