Reading   2 – 4   Swansea

Scott Sinclair

Scott Sinclair tucks away a penalty to give Swansea the lead

Scott Sinclair hit a hat-trick as Swansea became the first Welsh side to reach the Premier League after holding off a brave Reading fightback in a pulsating Championship play-off final at Wembley. The Swans have not played in the top flight of English football since 1983 but they scored three unanswered first-half goals to take control of Monday’s match.Sinclair struck twice in as many minutes midway through the half, first from the penalty spot and then with a close-range finish, before Stephen Dobbie scored with his right foot from 16 yards.Royals substitute Jay Tabb and assistant manager Nigel Gibbs were both red carded at the break after abusing referee Phil Dowd on what was turning into an afternoon to forget for Brian McDermott and his team, but the Royals surged back into the contest after the restart.Joe Allen headed into his own net following Noel Hunt’s flicked header, and Matt Mills converted a corner as Reading scored twice in eight minutes to leave the contest on a knife edge.Jem Karacan struck the Swansea post but Sinclair converted his second penalty of the afternoon 10 minutes from the end as the Welsh side held on.Swansea, who almost went out of business nine years ago, were far from their fluent best for most of the match but showed guts and resolve as Reading tore into them after the break. And their victory means that boss Brendan Rodgers, sacked by Reading after 23 games in charge in December 2009, ends his first campaign in south Wales celebrating the first promotion of his managerial career.Reading started the match with an intensity and tempo that suggested they did not want Swansea to settle into their smooth passing rhythm.Shane Long buzzed along the Swans back line and the Welsh side looked rattled, with keeper Dorus de Vries spilling a low cross that Ashley Williams eventually cleared.Swans right-back Alan Tate surrendered ground every time fit-again Royals winger Jimmy Kebe was in possession and the Reading man underlined his intent with one particularly dangerous run from inside his own half to the edge of his opponent’s area.Reading were perhaps unlucky not to be awarded a penalty of their own when central defender Garry Monk appeared to handle the ball. However, the complexion of the contest changed completely when Sinclair scored his quick-fire double.Nathan Dyer, the club’s player of the season, had been anonymous but there was no doubt that Zurab Khizanishvili clumsily hacked him down for the penalty that Sinclair casually slotted home with a precise low finish. The Reading defender was one of three players booked in the opening minutes of the game and he was perhaps fortunate to escape a second yellow for his foul on Dyer. The Royals did not have time to regroup before Swansea scored again, with left-back Ian Harte’s lack of pace cruelly exposed in the build-up.Dobbie surged past the Irishman, who had a comfortable head start in the race for the ball, before delivering a low cross that Adam Federici could only deflect into the path of Sinclair, who slotted home from six yards.

Reading's players can barely stand to look as they go in at half-time

Reading’s players had a mountain to climb at half-time

Royals striker Hunt headed wide from a corner at the near post but the momentum was now firmly with the Welsh side, who struck their third shortly before the break.Again the goal originated down the right, with Jobi McAnuff unable to block Dyer’s cross and Dobbie slotting home from 16 yards after Khizanishvili deflected the ball into his path. The Royals might have given themselves a lifeline before the break, but Long scuffed his six-yard strike after a deep cross fell invitingly at his feet, while De Vries saved a crisp 20-yard strike from Mikele Leigertwood.Reading’s afternoon deteriorated even further during the break when substitute Tabb and assistant manager Gibbs were both given their red cards. But their crestfallen supporters were given encouragement shortly after the restart when Allen deflected a header into his own net at the near post after Hunt’s flick. The Swans almost restored their three-goal lead but Dobbie, who was substituted for Darren Pratley straight afterwards, shot disappointingly wide from a good position at the end of a brilliant mazy run.His profligacy was punished as Royals skipper Mills headed home from a corner to bring his team right back into the contest. The momentum was fully with the Berkshire club and they almost equalised but a deflected Karacan shot hit the base of the post and Monk blocked Hunt’s goal-bound follow-up.Swansea then restored their crucial two-goal advantage when Sinclair completed his hat-trick with a penalty that just eluded the dive of Federici. There was no doubt about the spot kick, which was awarded after Andy Griffin clumsily fouled Fabio Borini and the Swans played out the final minutes with relatively few alarms to complete an incredible journey from League Two to the Premier League in just six years

More than 40,000 Swansea City fans are heading to Wembley hoping to see the club promoted to the Premier League.

The Championship play-off final is one of the biggest games in the club’s history and a win against Reading could net the Swans up to £90m.The Swans have never played in the Premier League, and have not featured in England’s top flight since 1983.The match comes just nine years after the Swans almost went bust and eight years since they beat Hull City on the final day of the 2002/03 season to stay in the Football League.”Emotions are changing a lot during the week, but looking back, the nerves are not as stressful as they were going back quite a while ago when we played Hull City,” said Swans chairman Huw Jenkins.”The build up to that game and the pressure involved and the fact that we were involved in the club at that time were far, far greater than they are today.”Supporters are travelling from all over the world to see the game including Canada, United States, Argentina, Trinidad, Russia, Germany, Holland, Thailand and New Zealand. One fan Garry George, is making a three-day trip, from Australia.”People obviously think I am a little bit mad, especially with the short turnaround and immediate return to work,” he said. The Swans received an initial allocation of 39,376 tickets for the final but were given extra after selling out in less than a week to take the total over 40,000.Many fans are travelling up by road and should make it hassle-free as there are no planned works on the M4 on Monday. Those travelling by train and tube have been warned they risk missing the match if they are caught taking alcohol on board as they face being removed from services.”We want everyone travelling to and from the match to enjoy themselves,” said British Transport Police’s sector commander for Wales, Ch Insp Sandra England.”But we know from experience that some fans can get caught up in the excitement of the day, and this, combined with alcohol, can result in some less-than-desirable behaviour.”We’re asking fans to show some consideration for others on board the train and to moderate their language and behaviour – but above all to enjoy the day.”

Messages of support

One fan who cannot make it though is Hollywood star Catherine Zeta Jones, who is originally from Swansea.”Coming from a family of Swans fans from such a young age I wait with baited breath for the playoff final in Wembley,” she said.”I vividly remember the Swans when they were last playing top flight football in the early 1980s and loved every minute of it.”My thoughts are with all the players and fans for this memorable day. Come on you Swans, let’s do it again.”Swansea boxer Enzo Maccarinelli also sent a good luck message.”The whole town is behind them,” said the former WBO world cruiserweight champion.”Everyone wrote them off at the beginning of the season so let’s prove them all wrong and get them into the Premier League.”Rugby side the Ospreys have thrown their support behind their Liberty Stadium colleagues.”They have earned their place in the final with some outstanding performances this season, and deserve their place at Wembley,” said Ospreys managing director Roger Blyth.

Swansea City’s players were given a send-off by fans on Saturday

“Swansea is a sports-mad city, and to have Premier League football and Wales’ leading rugby region playing out of the Liberty Stadium will be something wonderful that all sports-mad people in the region will be able to gain great satisfaction from.In Swansea, there are no planned events for match day, although supporters will be hoping for some kind of celebration should the Swans go up.”The Swans have already done superbly well but promotion to the Premier League would be an enormous achievement,” said Swansea council leader Chris Holley.”It’s a league that’s watched by many millions of people throughout the world and means thousands of fans from across the UK and beyond would be coming to Swansea for the first time.”It’d represent a wonderful marketing opportunity for Swansea Bay as a destination and would boost traders and accommodation providers across the area.”Football is generating a magnificent feel-good factor across the city at the moment.”

Last hooligans sentenced for Huddersfield Town and Millwall clashes – with video

POLICE have released shocking footage of a mass brawl on a busy Huddersfield road which left two unconscious.

Hooligans threw bottles, glasses and ashtrays at three minibuses of Millwall supporters stopped at a red light outside the Waterloo pub on Wakefield Road.Police released the footage – which shows a Huddersfield man being repeatedly kicked in the head – after the final three hooligans were sentenced yesterday.Det Insp Jim Griffiths of Kirklees CID promised police would not tolerate football-related violence.Speaking outside Bradford Crown Court, he said: “This was an incident of serious disorder and we’re thankful that no-one died or was seriously injured.“Disorder of this sort will not be tolerated – it will be stamped-out by police.”Det Insp Griffiths added: “This incident happened away from the ground and involved people who weren’t necessarily football fans.”The detective praised both clubs for helping police following the incident, which happened in the run-up to a play-off semi-final game at the Galpharm last April 16.He said: “Town and Millwall have worked really closely with us and they will help us ensure that banning orders which were imposed by the courts are enforced.“Huddersfield Town is a family club and they have worked with the police to make sure this disorder doesn’t happen again.”Det Insp Griffiths added that police were determined there would be no violence as Town take on Peterborough in tomorrow’s League 1 play-off final at Old Trafford. He said: “As well as a large-scale operation in Manchester, there will be a police presence in Huddersfield to make sure anyone determined to cause trouble is stopped.”Det Insp Griffiths was speaking just minutes after the final three hooligans were sentenced for their part in last year’s violence.X was sentenced to nine months in prison after pleading guilty to violent disorder and breaching a football banning order.
