150 football yobs told to get out of Cardiff

AROUND 150 people were rounded up and ordered to leave Cardiff before Wales lost to England in Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier. It is understood most of them were from the Swansea area, though unconnected to the Swans. The 150 fans were contained in Central Square as a result of disorderly behaviour en route from licensed premises to the Millennium Stadium.Match Commander, Chief Superintendent Alun Thomas from South Wales Police, said: “This containment was necessary to prevent further disorder and to maximise public safety. The group then left the city at our request. He added: “70,000 well-behaved supporters did not deserve to have their day ruined, or their personal safety compromised, by this small minority.”It should not distract from what was a hugely successful day for Cardiff with the overwhelming majority of people enjoying themselves and behaving responsibly.”Ticket touts arrested outside stadium — see page 15; Match report, reaction — Post Match supplement.

Capello criticises laser pen use at Wales-England match

England boss Fabio Capello has criticised fans for shining laser pens at players during the Wales-England match at the Millennium Stadium.Football association staff are in discussions over use of the torches during Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier.Adrian Bevington, managing director of the team’s strategy arm Club England, said those involved were “mindless idiots”.But the FA in England says it will not be lodging an official complaint. It was reported that a laser was shone at England player Jack Wilshere as he left the field for a replacement player during the game which England won two nil.The Football Association of Wales said it is in dialogue with its English counterparts over the incident, but both the Millennium Stadium and English Football Association have confirmed that no official complaint has been made.Capello urged football’s authorities to track down fans who are shining lasers in the eyes of players.

Neymar (centre) scored both goals as Brazil eased to victory against Scotland

Brazil striker Neymar is at the centre of a racism row after saying a banana was thrown at him during the 2-0 friendly win over Scotland.

A Brazilian press officer confirmed a banana had been thrown on the pitch.”This atmosphere of racism is totally sad,” Neymar told a Brazilian TV station. “We leave our country to play here and something like this happens.”But the Scottish FA said: “There has been no such incident reported to the police or the stadium safety officer.”

EL HADJI DIOUF has branded Calum Murray the worst ref he’s ever seen – and claimed all the officials in the Old Firm shame game were against Rangers.

The Senegalese hot-head insists Murray gave the Ibrox side NOTHING in the Scottish Cup clash at Parkhead on March 2.Murray sent Diouf off after Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra had also seen red.But Diouf said: “We lost 1-0 with nine players before I was sent off and the officials were against us.“Early on I went to see the ref as I was being kicked. He said ‘You don’t have the right to speak to me’ which annoyed me.”You have to say the ref messed up the game with cards flying everywhere.”At the end I told the ref he was the worst ref I’ve ever had so he gave me another card.”

Celtic boss Neil Lennon targeted again as hoax bomb is intercepted

By Catherin Lynagh
Monday, 28 March 2011

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has been targeted with a fake nail bomb.

The terror hoax, which was intercepted by mail workers at the weekend, is the third threat made to the Celtic manager in recent months.

In January, packages containing bullets addressed to Lennon and player Niall McGinn were intercepted by postal workers in Mallusk. The most recent parcel, which is understood to have contained a bottle filled with nails, was spotted by staff at Kirkintilloch delivery office close to Celtic’s Lennoxtown training ground.A police spokeswoman said: “The package was examined and the incident is being treated as a hoax.”A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a suspicious package was found at Kirkintilloch delivery office.“The usual security procedures were followed and police were called.”Three weeks ago, mail staff were evacuated from a sorting office in Saltcoats, Aryshire, for two hours when explosives experts were called in to examine the last suspicious package sent to Lurgan-born Lennon. The 39-year-old has had to increase his personal security in the wake of the threats. He has had a panic button installed at his home after receiving a threatening call in the middle of the night and is accompanied to club training sessions by a security guard.Mr Lennon’s agent Martin Reilly said recently that the Celtic boss would not quit his position despite the constant threats made against him.“He was a winner as a player and he’s a winner as a manager,” Reilly said recently in a radio interview.“As far as quitting as Celtic’s manager goes, it’s not in Neil’s nature,” he said.
