Man Utd 2 0 Arsenal

Wayne Rooney celebrates with Javier Hernandez
Wayne Rooney’s second goal proved a killer blow to Arsenal’s FA Cup ambitions

Manchester United produced a clinical display to reach the FA Cup semi-final and dump Arsenal out of their third Cup competition in a fortnight.

Despite starting with seven defenders, the hosts carried more threat than Arsenal early on and Fabio da Silva scored on the rebound on 28 minutes.Wayne Rooney then made it 2-0 with a neat header after the break to seal it.Edwin van der Sar saved from Robin van Persie, Laurent Koscielny and Marouane Chamakh to preserve that lead late on.

Burnley 0 3 Millwall

Paul Robinson scored a second-half double as Millwall ended Burnley’s three-match winning run and kept their own faint play-off hopes alive.

Defender Robinson opened the scoring from six yards with a neat left-footed finish from Andros Townsend’s corner.Robinson grabbed his second when he met Alan Dunne’s cross and fired in left-footed from 12 yards out.Townsend grabbed a third in the 87th minute when he rifled home a low left-foot shot from 12 yards.

Sunderland yobs arrested on train home from Arsenal

OUT-OF-CONTROL Sunderland fans were arrested for a catalogue of shameful offences as they travelled back by train from the club’s clash with Arsenal in London.British Transport Police branded the behaviour of the small mob as “totally unacceptable” after a female guard was assaulted, a fan exposed himself, obscenities were shouted in front of travelling families and fans urinated in public. The offences happened as fans returned from Saturday’s 0-0 draw at The Emirates Stadium.Five were taken into custody, three served with fixed penalty notices and three reported for bad behaviour.Pc Wayne Mitchell, police football intelligence officer for BTP, said: “The behaviour of a small number of fans, which started at Kings Cross and continued all the way to Newcastle, was a disgrace and totally unacceptable.“A number of the travelling public and rail staff, both at the station and on the trains, were subjected to bad language and behaviour, and we simply will not tolerate it.“We are seeking football banning orders. ”A 52-year-old man was arrested after a female guard was assaulted at Kings Cross. A 26-year-old was also arrested at Peterborough station for sexual exposure. Both have been bailed pending further inquiries.Three men were given fixed penalty notices for disorderly conduct and for using foul language on the train. Three more have been reported for unacceptable behaviour, including urinating at Darlington Station and using abusive language.Paul Weir, SAFC head of safety and security, said: “A small minority of fans have behaved in a way that is totally unacceptable to our football club. Such behaviour will not be tolerated and we will work with BTP to ensure appropriate action is taken.”

Steven Gerrard out for up to four weeks after surgery

Steven Gerrard
Gerrard’s injury is a blow to Liverpool as they push for a top-four spot

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has undergone surgery on his groin and will be out for up to four weeks.

“The decision was made following consultation with a specialist,” a club statement read on Friday. The England midfielder was not part of the Reds squad which travelled to Braga for Thursday’s Europa League defeat. If he is out for a month, Gerrard will not feature for England in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales on 26 March or the friendly against Ghana.Gerrard suffered the injury in the 1-0 win against Chelsea on 6 February at Stamford Bridge. The news will be frustrating for manager Kenny Dalglish who will be without his 30-year-old skipper for at least three Premier League matches. This includes away fixtures against Sunderland and West Brom, followed by a home match with Manchester City on 11 April.Dalglish’s best-case scenario will have Gerrard available for the season’s remaining six league games.Liverpool, currently in sixth spot in the table with nine matches left, also face a tough task to make the quarter-finals in the Europa League. The Reds have to overturn a 1-0 deficit when they play Braga in the second leg at Anfield next Thursday.Gerrard was forced to sit out five games for his club at the end of last year after tearing a hamstring during England’s 2-1 defeat at home to France in November.
