Rangers claimed a scoreless draw in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie against PSV in Eindhoven.
Marcus Berg had an effort saved by Neil Alexander and Marcelo headed wide as PSV pressed for a first-half opener.Berg fired wide after the break and PSV keeper Andreas Isaksson saved well from Kyle Bartley’s header for the visitors.And Marcelo missed the game’s best opportunity when he headed wide with the goal at his mercy midway through the second half.The sides meet again in next Thursday’s return leg at Ibrox where a win for either side would send them through, while a score draw would give the Dutch side an away goals victory.Rangers made a surprise change in goal with regular first-choice Allan McGregor dropped to the bench and Alexander starting while there were also places in the line-up for youngster Kyle Hutton and the returning Kyle Lafferty, back after illness. John Fleck and David Healy joined McGregor on the bench.

Redknapp praises ‘fantastic achievement’
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp described his club’s progress as an “impossible dream” after they secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Spurs drew 0-0 with Serie A leaders AC Milan at home on Wednesday to seal a 1-0 aggregate win and last-eight place.”This is an impossible dream that we have achieved so far,” said Redknapp.”Two years ago if you would have said that we would have made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, I would have thought you were crazy.“Tottenham had finished top of a group including holders Inter Milan, Werder Bremen and FC Twente to reach the knock-out stages.And Redknapp was full of praise for his players after they knocked out a side that has won Europe’s premier club competition seven times.”It’s our first year in the club’s history we have ever made Champions League football, so that was a fantastic achievement to have won our group and to do what we have done against AC Milan,” said the 64-year-old.”We have beaten AC Milan over two legs with two clean sheets and won our group, which was the hardest of the lot.”With Peter Crouch’s late strike at the San Siro in the first leg separating the sides, Milan tried desperately to get back on level terms at White Hart Lane, having 58% of the possession and serving up 16 attempts on goal, with three on target.

Police must protect Celtic manager Neil Lennon, says top lawyer

A TOP lawyer last night called on the police to do more to protect Celtic manager Neil Lennon.
Paul McBride, QC, Lennon’s legal representative, also blasted “morons” who had made death threats to the Parkhead boss and his family.Mr McBride said: “I went on the internet this morning and found around 30 sites about Neil Lennon. Some of them said kill him, some said stab him.”One of the websites had his address on it, and a picture of his partner and his young child on it. That i s absolutely disgraceful.”Police are able to catch paedophiles on the internet, and Muslims threatening to blow up things, very quickly.”Why can’t these people be identified and brought to justice, and why are these websites allowing these morons to post these kinds of comments?”Lennon has suffered a number of threats in the 10 years he has been affiliated with Celtic.

RANGERS will tonight try to force their way towards the last eight of the Europa League – by piling pressure on error-prone PSV keeper Andreas Isaksson.Record Sport can reveal Walter Smith and his backroom team have identified the 6ft 7in Swede as a possible weak link in the side that tops the Dutch Eredivisie.Former Man City No.1 Isaksson has a history of big-match howlers and was even turned on by his own fans last season after a nightmarish performance in a crunch table-top clash with Ajax.Isaksson is under pressure again after his clanger almost cost PSV victory at the weekend when they scraped a 3-2 win over strugglers Excelsior, in a match watched by Ibrox spy Ian Durrant.The Swede was widely blamed for costing his club the title last season because of his notoriously erratic form and, as part of Smith’s game plan for this first-leg tie at the Philips Stadium, Rangers will try to put the nervy 29-year-old under pressure, especially from crosses and set-pieces.Smith believes Rangers are capable of carving out another big away-day result.He said: “In the Champions League and Europa League, an away goal is a factor. Look at Arsenal in Barcelona – they were still in the match until the last minute and if they had scored they’d have gone through. So it is important to get an away goal.”Smith warned his players they will face a step up in class against the Dutch after toppling Sporting Lisbon in the round of 16.But Rangers have been boosted here in Eindhoven with the news that one and possibly even two of their attacking options could be fit.Kyle Lafferty is ready to return to act ion after his recent bout of tonsillitis.And Slovakian winger Vladimir Weiss will be given until this afternoon to win his battle against a bruised foot.Full-back Sasa Papac did not fly with the team as he continues his recovery from a head knock in last week’s stormy Old Firm derby but the Bosnian is expected to be clear to face Kilmarnock in the SPL on Sunday.Smith said: “We need as many players as possible because this will be tough.”PSV are a steadier team than Sporting, who were similar to ourselves and were having a similar season to us, such as their financial problems and losing their top goalscorer.”PSV have a stability about them that we’ve not had but whether they are better than us or not will come out in these two games.”They have a strong physical presence. PSV can also be quite direct but they are a typical Dutch team in their passing and moving.”They also play with two wingers and a three in the middle of the park.”PSV boss Fred Rutten is a man under pressure even though his side sit three points clear of Twente at the top of the Dutch league.He has also been pilloried by the media here in Holland and described as a perennial “nearly man” for his failure to nail down trophy success.
