Arsenal e Chelsea si sono qualificate alla fase successiva della massima manifestazione continentale. Chelsea’s dire run of form continued as Brandao’s late strike handed Marseille a narrow win in their Champions League Group F finale at the Stade Velodrome.

The Brazilian tapped in after Taye Taiwo’s shot had been deflected into his path to secure a deserved home win.It ended Chelsea’s hopes of earning six group wins out of six and they will rue the denial of two big penalty appeals.Florent Malouda and Salomon Kalou were felled in the box, but the Blues still enter the last 16 as group winners.

Alan Pardew is set to be named as the new Newcastle United manager within the next 24 hours, BBC Sport understands.

The former Reading, West Ham, Charlton and Southampton boss was among the favourites to take over from Chris Hughton, who was sacked on Monday.Hughton led Newcastle back into the top flight last season but following his dismissal, the club said it wanted someone “with more experience”.Pardew, 49, has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton in August.BBC Sport understands that Pardew, who is an associate of director Derek Llambias, was in talks with Newcastle about taking over at St James’ Park as long as 10 days ago.

SPL hopeful that predicted rising temperatures will see full programme of games this weekend

THE SPL believe normal service will resume this weekend with top-flight football back on the menu.

A thaw in the weather is predicted over the next few days and Record Sport understands the SPL are quietly confident all six scheduled fixtures will go ahead.Last week, league chiefs took the unprecedented step of scrapping the whole weekend card a full three days in advance due to the severe weather.However, it seems the SPL are this time happy enough to see if warmer weather arrives in time to thaw out the snow and open up most major road and rail routes.So far this week 14 matches, including lower-league games and Scottish Cup ties, have been postponed due to heavy snow.But a league spokesman said: “The SPL are monitoring the current weather situation closely and we are also in regular contact with all of our member clubs.”It is very much a watching brief at the moment due to the unpredictable nature of the weather.”

 

Rangers boss Walter Smith praised two teenagers who impressed in the 1-1 draw at Bursapor in the Champions League.

Kenny Miller scored for Rangers before the Turkish club secured their first point in Group C with a late equaliser.Defender Darren Cole, making his first-team debut at 18, and 19-year-old midfielder Kyle Hutton, both featured because of injuries to key players.“It is a big ask of them all,” Smith said. “We hope they can take advantage of the experience they are gaining.”It was a night of mixed emotions for the Ibrox boss who will step down at the end of the season to be replaced by assistant Ally McCoist.Smith insisted ahead of the clash in Turkey that it was not a dead rubber, despite them having already finished third spot in Group C, saying that money and being seeded still rested on the result.
