Jermain Defoe and Wilson Palacios celebrate
Defoe scored his first goals since August on a freezing night in Enschede

By David Ornstein

Tottenham ensured they will avoid Europe’s biggest clubs in the last 16 of the Champions League after drawing at FC Twente to finish top of Group A.

Goalkeeper Sander Boschker missed his kick from a back-pass to put Spurs ahead, but Twente equalised through Denny Landzaat’s retaken penalty.Jermain Defoe restored Tottenham’s lead with a neat finish before Roberto Rosales headed his side level. After Defoe tapped in a second, Nacer Chadli’s free-kick gave Twente a point.Tottenham arrived in Enschede already assured of their place in the next round, but knew victory would guarantee pole position and secure a potentially-favourable knockout-stage draw.

Anderson (second left) celebrates his equaliser against Valencia

Manchester United survived a scare as they came back from a goal down to earn a draw against Valencia and top their group in the Champions League.

Pablo Hernandez drove in a shot to put the visitors ahead and in a position to overtake United to top Group C.Wayne Rooney curled a shot against the crossbar for the home side as they struggled to take their chances. But United eventually equalised when a Ji-Sung Park shot was parried and Anderson pounced to slot in.

Rangers were pegged back by a late Sercan Yildirim strike for Bursaspor, most likely ending their chances of being seeded in the Europa League.

Kenny Miller lashed a cracking left-foot shot past Yavuz Ozkan in 19 minutes to put the Ibrox side ahead. And his Scotland strike partner Steven Naismith ought to have headed another. But the Turkish champions pushed Rangers back for most of the second half, with Federico Insua going close with a free-kick before they levelled.

Martin Jol and Alan Pardew in the frame after Newcastle sack Chris Hughton

By Colin Young

Former Tottenham boss Martin Jol has emerged as a shock contender to take over at Newcastle after betting was suspended on Alan Pardew being named as Chris Hughton’s successor. As players and fans reacted angrily to Hughton’s sacking, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley was trying to find the successor to the man who guided the club back to the Barclays Premier League, thrashed Sunderland in the derby six games ago and left them in 12th place. Former West Ham boss Pardew was initially the bookies’ favourite and betting was suspended during the day. But within hours of the sacking, Jol – for whom Hughton worked as No 2 at White Hart Lane – quit at Ajax, prompting a fresh flurry of bets.

Sources in Holland say Jol has a real desire to work in the Premier League again and would be interested in the Newcastle job but he may be offered a return to Hamburg – the club he left to take charge at Ajax in 2009. Ashley faces the near-impossible task of winning over the fans with his next move after the popular Hughton’s exit. Even the appointment of Geordie legend Peter Beardsley as interim boss has failed to appease supporters. Hughton had fought attempts to bring in the new reserve coach as his assistant for weeks. Fans inundated websites and radio stations in support of Hughton and furiously attacked owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias for their decision. Veteran defender Sol Campbell, 36, also revealed the anger and bewilderment in the dressing room. The defender, a Hughton summer signing, said: ‘This makes no sense. He got the club back into the Premier League and any manager would have been rewarded for that with a new contract – but Chris wasn’t. When we left training this morning none of the players had a clue this was coming. ‘It will affect the dressing room, no doubt about that. It will hit the players hard. The players admired him, and liked him, and won’t be happy now he’s gone like this.’Several bookmakers have suspended betting on Pardew taking over at St James’ Park. He won promotion with West Ham and reached the FA Cup final before being sacked four years ago, and was also relegated with Charlton. He also won last season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with Southampton and nearly guided them to the play-off places despite the club’s 10-point deduction. He was sacked in August. Sportsmail revealed in October that only a late equaliser against Wigan saved Hughton, 51, from the sack, but this was dismissed by the club. His deal was due to run out in May after he was appointed permanently 13 months ago. Hughton said: ‘I’m immensely proud of my achievements with Newcastle and I enjoyed a fantastic relationship with the players, my staff and the supporters during my time as manager. I now wish them and the club all the very best for the future.’ But his departure was condemned by the League Managers’ Association. Richard Bevan, chief executive, said: ‘The LMA is extremely disappointed . . . given the success the club have experienced since his appointment.’ He added that Hughton conducted himself with ‘tremendous integrity and dignity’ while at Newcastle.

RANGERS fans were on alert last night after rioting Turks sparked a soccer bloodbath.

Three Bursaspor fans were STABBED and scores of others hurt after trouble erupted during their clash with Besiktas yesterday.

And that has fuelled fears for the safety of around 650 Gers supporters who will fly here for tomorrow night’s Champions League showdown with Bursaspor.Ibrox bosses have warned them to be extra-vigilant in the hostile atmosphere of the Ataturk Stadium.Rangers chiefs flew in last night to learn of the violent scenes that marred yesterday’s clash in Istanbul.Thousands of Besiktas yobs threw rocks and bottles to break through a police cordon and attack fans of their biggest rivals.TV station CNN Turk showed footage of cops using tear gas and batons to break up ugly battles outside the Inonu Stadium.Around 1,200 fans of Bursaspor – who have had a string of violent run-ins with Besiktas in the past – were caught up in the chaotic scenes.Rangers security boss David Martin said: “We will be meeting with the match officials on Monday morning to discuss our preparations for the game.”We’ll look at the incidents over the weekend and decide how that should impact on our own arrangements.”Clearly we urge all Rangers supporters travelling to Turkey to be vigilant as their safety is our main concern.”
