West Brom 3 1 Newcastle

Tchoyi scored a brilliant opener for West Brom

Two goals from Peter Odemwingie helped West Brom to a comfortable victory over Newcastle at The Hawthorns.

Midfielder Somen Tchoyi opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark when he curled in a superb effort from just inside the 18-yard area.Odemwingie then took advantage of a Danny Guthrie slip when he ran into the box and fired a low shot past Tim Krul. The Nigerian forward slotted in his second late on before Peter Lovenkrands poked in a consolation strike. But it was arguable whether Chris Hughton’s men deserved to get on the scoresheet following what was a poor and nervy display.West Brom were marginally better, but most importantly they were more potent in attack.

Record signing Asamoah Gyan crossed from the right to find midfielder Henderson who fired past Robert Green in the West Ham goal. The win maintains Sunderland’s unbeaten home record in the league as West Ham fought hard to find an equaliser.Sunderland move up to seventh while the Hammers go bottom below Wolverhampton Wanderers on goal difference.

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti worried by slump in form

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti
Ancelotti was frustrated by Chelsea’s use of long-ball tactics against Everton

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti felt that his team were afraid during the second half of their 1-1 draw with Everton.

The Blues have taken five points from their last six Premier League games and failed to win in their last four.”We started to be scared when Everton put pressure on us,” said Ancelotti, whose team now play Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal”This period is not easy but we are close to the top and do not have to be worried as we were in the second half.”The defending champions won their opening five Premier League fixtures, scoring 21 goals in the process, but that form has deserted them and they have slipped to third in the table.

Didier Drogba put Chelsea in front from the penalty spot shortly before the interval against Everton after an impressive first-half performance. But the London club faded badly after the break and Everton substitute Jermaine Beckford equalised with a header four minutes before the end of normal time.”The second half was poor, we did not play how we wanted, just long ball and that is not the way we play,” added Ancelotti.”I am disappointed because we did not play our football. The spirit was good in the first half, we did not have a lot of chances but we worked hard and had good tactical discipline.”I have to understand why we did not play in the second half. After the break it was totally different.

Poor second-half display frustrates Ancelotti”We were not in control for the second goal – we lost discipline and they could have won the game on the counter attack.”I am worried yes, because we haven’t won a lot of games. The second half was totally wrong. We have to do better.”Chelsea’s last top-flight win came against Fulham on 10 November – and they have since lost to Sunderland and Birmingham and drawn against Newcastle and Everton.”The result was not good, we wanted to win but we are still living in a difficult moment,” said Ancelotti of Saturday’s match.”We have to stay focused and use our next game to move on from this period.”Ancelotti’s team face London rivals Spurs at White Hart Lane on 12 December, before a home fixture against United the following Sunday.Chelsea then take on Arsenal in another tricky away fixture on Monday, 27 December.

Moyes disappointed not to beat Chelsea

Everton have not won for six Premier League games and manager David Moyes was disappointed that his team did not pick up all three points at Stamford Bridge.“Our performance in the second half was terrific and we bounced back after the poor game last weekend,” said Moyes, whose team lost their previous match 4-1 at home to West Brom.”The players showed great attitude and never gave up. The second half we deserved the result. Chelsea had a few chances but then you expect that. It was tough for us in the first half.”The quality of our decisions in the final third probably cost us winning the game.”Moyes challenged his players to continue their improvement in form in the forthcoming games against Wigan, Manchester City and Birmingham.”We have to prove it because we have not done it often enough. It is not enough for me but it is a start,” he said.”But after last week I am delighted to have come away with a point.”

STORM’ WARNING AS FOOTBALL YOBS PLAN RIOT

DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: Brimingham fans clashed wih Aston Villa supporters this week

“
Various firms have long-held grudges with each other and are determined to settle old scores
”

RIVAL hooligan gangs are plotting to drag football through the gutter by arranging clashes in a ‘perfect storm’ for football yobs.Notorious thugs from Leeds, Birmingham City, West Ham and Millwall are all in London on the same day next month for the third round of the FA Cup.And astonishingly, police have allowed Arsenal and bitter rivals Tottenham to play at home on the same day too.

The Gunners face Leeds United, who are expected to take up their allocation of 8,500 tickets for the Emirates clash, which has a 12.45pm kick-off on January 8.Spurs face either Charlton or Luton a few hours later at White Hart Lane, while Millwall are at home to Birmingham, whose fans clashed with Aston Villa supporters after their Carling Cup win at St Andrews in midweek.West Ham host Barnsley, who have themselves have had confrontations with Leeds fans in the past.“Troublemakers have been using internet forums to discuss possible ‘meets’ with rivals and are amazed the police are allowing this to happen,” said a source.“The various firms have long-held grudges with each other and are determined to settle old scores.“They are calling it a perfect storm because all the elements needed for potential trouble are there together on the same day. There is some pure hatred out there between a lot of these so-called supporters and the authorities will have their work cut out to keep the peace.”
