Torres delighted with double strike

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres does not feel he has returned to his best form despite scoring both goals in Sunday’s 2-0 win against Chelsea.

Torres has come under scrutiny during Liverpool’s patchy start to the season and has been criticised for his touch and at times lacklustre demeanour. However, the Spaniard, 26, who has suffered an injury-plagued year, said: “It’s been difficult but I’m improving.”I don’t know if I can play my best soon but I will as soon as possible.”Torres ran the current Premier League leaders ragged in the first half with a well-taken opener on 11 minutes and a delightful curling shot just before half-time to double his personal goal tally for the season.

We will appeal against Balotelli red card – Mancini

Roberto Mancini says Manchester City will appeal against Mario Balotelli’s sending off at West Brom.

Balotelli was shown a straight red card for appearing to kick Youssuf Mulumbu during City’s 2-0 win at The Hawthorns.City boss Mancini felt Balotelli should not have been awarded a red card, which would keep him out of Wednesday’s Manchester derby at Eastlands.”I absolutely do not agree with the referee about this sending-off,” Mancini said. “A red card for what?”The Italian added: “He played a fantastic game, he scored two goals, but the sending off was very strange.”I want to know why it was a direct red card. For me this is not correct and the referee must explain.”I am angry because I explained to him before the game – pay attention with the referee. I wanted to change Adam Johnson for Mario, but I didn’t have time to make the change.”

Edinburgh derby descends into mayhem as players are pelted with missiles

THE Edinburgh derby became a shame game yesterday as Scottish football lurched head first into another crisis.Hearts dumped Hibs 2-0 at Easter Road with goals by David Templeton and Stephen Elliot amid scenes of mayhem. The first capital derby of the season was marred by a host of incidents that saw fireworks, coins and bottles thrown by supporters of both clubs who are set to be hammered by the SFA.The match, beamed live on Sky television to a nationwide audience, is another headache for Hampden beaks after the Dougie McDonald and Hugh Dallas scandals. The mayhem kicked off seconds after the Gorgie side opened the scoring as flares were launched from the Hearts end and Tynecastle manager Jim Jefferies later admitted he feared for the safety of his players.Jambos striker Kevin Kyle appeared to be struck with a coin and was booked for throwing the ball at an advertising board in frustration.Fans in the East Stand ripped up seats causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.TV pictures also showed referee Willie Collum – who received death threats after taking charge of the recent Old Firm derby – gathering up an assortment of coins and lighters that had been thrown on to the pitch.Hibs skipper Derek Riordan saw red late on for a horrendous tackle on Rudi Skacel – and the Lithuanian was then pelted by coins and bottles from fans in the South Stand as he received treatment at the side of the pitch. Both clubs will now have to wait to find out what penalties they face when the Hampden beaks read the report from match observer George Douglas. His assessment of what went on is sure to contain several damning statements concerning the behaviour of fans of both clubsHearts boss Jefferies said: “The derby is a great, passionate occasion and it shouldn’t be spoiled by idiots throwing things.”You can expect some banter and fans exchanging songs because that’s part and parcel of these games but not the kind of incidents we saw today.”Jefferies praised striker Kyle for his contribution and suggested he had been provoked when it came to his booking. The manager said: “Kevin had his best game since coming back to Scotland and it’s because he thought he wasn’t going to be in the team.”I’d had a word with him and he knew I wasn’t happy with how he had been performing over the past few weeks. But he was certainly putting that bit extra into training.”It was maybe down to a little bit of man management on my part.”I kept delaying when I wanted to see him and he was starting to panic about his place but I just told him not to let me down.”He was in his element in this game as it was a competitive derby.”I didn’t see the incident with him at the boards but maybe he was provoked and if so he needs to rise above that.”It was getting a little bit frantic and the two sets of fans were having a go at each other.”The game was petering out as we had the points in the bag and it always looked more like being 3-0 than 2-1.”Hibs were only really dangerous at the start of the second half.”The home side had only two shots on goal during a dire 90 minutes and one of them came in the final minute. But boss Colin Calderwood preferred to praise Hearts keeper Marian Kello rather than point the finger of blame at his players. He said: “I thought he (Kello) had a good performance. His interception on crosses was excellent.”I think he was an important factor in the game, much more than stats and shots on target will show. We lacked a killer blow and our set-plays varied between poor and average.”

Dopo il grande successo di “Lads 2009”

Storia e contemporaneità della cultura Casual d’Oltre Manica.. Approfondimenti sui fatti dell’ultimo decennio.
