The Spanish striker deftly controlled Dirk Kuyt’s cross before holding off John Terry to stab in an early opener.Torres stunned the Blues on the stroke of half-time, picking up Raul Meireles’ pass and curling in from the edge of the box after a mistake by Ashley Cole.Kuyt was close to adding a third for the Reds but they held on as Pepe Reina saved from Florent Malouda and pushed Nicolas Anelka’s shot on to the bar.

Andy Carroll’s first-half header gave Newcastle their first victory over Arsenal for almost five years.

Mario Balotelli’s two goals inspired Manchester City to a much-needed win but the fiery Italian was sent off as both sides finished with 10 men.

Brilliant David Silva passes created the Italian’s first-half brace, the first slid in from a Carlos Tevez cross and the second a muscular low shot.But Balotelli got a straight red in the second half for kicking at Youssuf Mulumbu minutes after being booked.Mulumbu was then sent off for sliding through the back of Tevez.

Swansea closed the gap on second-placed Cardiff to three points with a dominant victory at their south Wales rivals.

Marvin Emnes stuck the winner from 20 yards after holding off Gabor Gyepes and firing past Tom Heaton with the aid of a deflection off Mark Hudson.Scott Sinclair had earlier hit the post for Swansea as the visitors ended Cardiff’s five-match winning run.Craig Bellamy missed a great chance when clean through and then again a free header in the dying stages.

Five arrested at Cardiff v Swansea football derby

Five arrests were made at the Cardiff City v Swansea City football derby on Sunday afternoon.Two fans were arrested for invading the pitch at the game which saw the visitors Swansea beat their south Wales promotion rivals 1-0.Three arrests were made after the game – one for a public order offence, one for assault and one for possession of drugs.South Wales Police said the event was “well policed”.All five men arrested remain in police custody.Inspector Dan Howe said: “We have made five arrests out of more than 27,000 fans at the game which is a relatively small number compared to previous years.”Extra officers remain on duty in Cardiff and Swansea to deal with any later incidents that may arise following the match.”Cardiff City Stadium hosted the 59th meeting between the two rival sides.Swansea’s Marvin Emnes scored the winning goal in the second half.

A brilliant solo goal from David Templeton helped give Hearts a deserved derby win that leaves Hibernian second bottom of the Scottish Premier League.
