Liverpool remain confident takeover will be completed

Anfield
Liverpool want to complete a sale to rid them of their debts

Liverpool chief executive Christian Purslow is confident the proposed sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV) will go ahead.

The £300m takeover would wipe out the club’s debt, ending the possibility that parent company Kop Holdings could be placed in administration.Purslow told BBC Radio 5 live: “I’m completely focused on making sure the sale completes.”I’m not contemplating administration and nobody should be.”Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are set to oppose the sale of the club in the High Court because they value the Anfield outfit at double NESV’s bid.Proceedings are likely to take place on Tuesday with the American pair’s Kop Holdings company owing £280m to Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) which must be paid by 15 October. As the court date nears, the experienced barrister Lord Grabiner QC has been working with Liverpool’s solicitors, Slaughter and May, with a settlement before then understood to be unlikely. If Hicks and Gillett – who are outvoted on the club’s board – are successful in blocking the proposed sale, or if it is delayed beyond next Friday, RBS might place Kop Holdings into administration to release the money owed to them.

Marseille could take legal action against Nigel de Jong

Hatem Ben Arfa
De Jong’s challenge on Ben Arfa went unpunished at Eastlands

Marseille have said they could take legal action against Manchester City’s Nigel de Jong after his tackle broke the leg of Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa.

Ben Arfa, who is on a season-long loan from Marseille, is set for a long spell on the sidelines after suffering a double fracture last Sunday. The French club’s president Jean-Claude Dassier told TF1’s Telefoot programme: “We will file a claim against De Jong.”It’s about getting rid of this type of individual from European grounds.”Even though De Jong was not booked for the incident in the 2-1 victory for Manchester City at Eastlands on 3 October, he was dropped from the Netherlands squad for their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Moldova last Friday and Sweden on Tuesday after coach Bert van Marwijk said it was “a wild and unnecessary offence”.Newcastle subsequently wrote to the Football Association asking it to take action against the 25-year-old Dutch midfielder for the tackle which it deemed to be “unnecessary and using excessive force.”The FA said it would consider the letter but may be powerless to implement any punishment.

Hooliganism is on the rise

THE ugly world of football hooliganismis on the rise, with teenage yobs at the forefront of the resurgence, new figures have revealed.Incidents involving young people have almost trebled in the past three years. There were 103 incidents involving youths last season, compared with just 38 in 2007/08.The statistics, produced by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), showed more than 280 teenagers were banned from football grounds at the end of August, making up almost 10 per cent of the 3,059 people on football banning orders. In 2008/09, supporters of Bolton Wanderers were given 44 banning orders. The figure placed the club 24th out of the 92 football league clubs.Bury followers were given just six orders.Leeds United topped the league with 162, followed by Cardiff City and Millwall.Police chiefs say while the current trend is worrying, the rate of growth has slowed and the number of violent incidents were a long way from the levels seen in the 1970s and 1980s.Andy Holt, the Association of Chief Police Officers lead on football policing, said: “It is something we are acutely aware of.People are coming through and engaging in football disorder who perhaps weren’t around in the heyday of football violence 15 to 20 years ago.“So it is a worrying trend that the younger element are starting to pick up on this sort of behaviour.”

East Belfast DUP representative Robin Newton says he received calls from members of the public complaining about BNP members outside the football ground last weekend.Supporters of the party were seen carrying placards and handing out leaflets as part of a campaign of support for British soldiers in Afghanistan, it is understood.Mr Newton described their presence at the match as “uninvited and unwelcome”.“A number of constituents have contacted me to express their disgust at the presence of the BNP outside their local club,” he said.“They go to the Oval to support the Glens and enjoy a game of football; they don’t want to be faced with BNP messages of hate.”I presume this BNP presence is some sort of campaign to raise their nauseous profile, and I appeal for everyone to stand as one to reject their message.”The BNP should pack up their messages of hate and disappear. They have been rejected time and time again, they represent no-one, and we don’t want them in our midst.”Alliance councillor Mervyn Jones said the group “has no place” at the sports ground.“I am disgusted that the BNP would try to take advantage of a football match to try and canvass support for their sickening views,” Mr Jones said.“I am glad that Glentoran fans have given this group the red card as this type of activity has no place anywhere near our sports grounds.”As a Glentoran supporter, I strongly resent any attempt to link Glentoran Football Club to the BNP.”Inside the ground I spoke to a number of people and everyone I spoke to was opposed the presence of the BNP, which might be considered the only positive thing to come from this disgusting episode.”
