Northern Ireland manager Worthington proud of display

Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington praised his team after the scoreless draw with Italy at Windsor Park.

“We had a big heart, worked hard and the discipline within the team was magnificent,” he said.”I think we’re in a good position but the players are disappointed with just a point – we had a couple of chances and we didn’t pass the ball well.”I’m delighted by their attitude, not thinking of a draw but instead wanting to beat the former world champions.”David Healy wasted Northern Ireland’s best chance against Italy and has now gone 14 games without a goal. However, the country’s all-time leading scorer retains the backing of Worthington.

We have got to be ultra professional in our preparations for the game.

“It’s just not dropping for him but I will stick by him, he has got my support,” he added.”The hour he had will make him all the more fresher for the Faroe Islands game.”Worthington’s focus is now on Tuesday’s away qualifier against the Faroes, who lost 5-1 in Slovenia on Friday night.”We have got to be ultra professional in our preparations for the game and try to get three points, which will not be easy,” he said.”Their manager Brian Kerr knows the British games, he knows our players and will know how to set his team up against us.”

Levein defends Scotland system

Craig Levein insists he was happy with his controversial formation despite Scotland’s 1-0 defeat by the Czech Republic in their Euro 2012 qualifier.

“I was happy with it,” said the coach about a formation in Prague that did not include an out-and-out striker.”I picked a system that I thought was working very well.”We lost a goal to a set-piece, but I can’t fault the lads for what we did tonight. We restricted them for the majority of the game.Roman Hubnik scored the only goal with a close-range header in the 70th minute, but it was a game that rarely featured Scotland as an attacking force.Levein had played without an out-and-out striker, leaving an in-form Kenny Miller frustrated and apparently angry on the bench.Asked what he would say to those who will say he should have used a different system, the Scotland boss sarcastically told BBC Scotland: “Yes, and that different system always results in a victory doesn’t it

We have a game on Tuesday and it gives us a chance to bounce back from this defeat

Scotland coach Craig Levein

“The whole game plan wasn’t to lose a goal and, when we lose a goal, it all changes, of course.”We lost a goal to a set-piece, which generally we are good at defending, but I think we had some pretty good performances out there.”A lot of hard work went into the performance tonight and I can’t fault them.”Scotland now have four points from three games ahead of the match against world champions Spain at Hampden on Tuesday night.”We have a game on Tuesday and it gives us a chance to bounce back from this defeat,” said Levein.

“I made it pretty clear that I picked a system to play against the Czech Republic and it will be a different system on Tuesday night.”It’s not disastrous. The Czech Republic have still to come to play at Hampden and, if we win that game, it evens it up over the two matches.”It’s not a fatal blow by any stretch of the imagination. We are still in it, we will keep working as hard as we did this evening and we will do our best to improve for Tuesday and the games that are still to come.”

Naismith regrets set-piece goal

Scotland forward Steven Naismith denied any suggestions of unrest among the players over Levein’s formation.

“The manager is very thorough in what he does,” he said. “He does a lot of homework on the other teams and every player is right behind. He has a good spirit in the team.”We are all professional footballers and we can adapt. We all play different systems with our clubs and everybody knew their roles and had worked hard on it all week.”We perhaps did not make the best of the opportunities that came our way.”Naismith thought the Scots still had a chance of qualifying for the finals in Poland and Ukraine despite the defeat.”It is very disappointing,” he added. “The biggest thing we are disappointed with is that it was a set play. They have not carved us open.”The Czech Republic have quality players who can cut you open, but it was a set-piece got through us.”

A YOB of 13 has been banned from all football grounds – as figures show the number of teenage soccer hooligans has trebled in three years.

Police chiefs fear the worrying trend could signal a new generation of thugs prepared to plunge UK football back into the dark days of the violence-plagued 1970s and 80s.And there is disturbing evidence teenagers are being “trained” by veteran hooligans whose brutal behaviour once made British supporters the most feared and hated in Europe.Figures from the Association of Chief Police Officers show last season there were 103 incidents of football hooliganism involving youths aged between 13 and 18. It compares with just 38 in 2007/08.

Andy Holt, Acpo spokesman on football policing, said: “If they’re engaging in football-related disorder at an earlier age, then we’re going to be stuck with that sort of behaviour potentially for some while.”People are coming through and engaging in football disorder who weren’t around in the heyday of football violence. It’s a worrying trend.”Acpo’s figures show there are currently 290 teenagers banned from football grounds – almost ten per cent of the 3,150 total. The youngest banned supporter is a 13-year-old who was given a three-year exclusion order from every UK ground for a public order offence. The oldest to be banned is 71.Police fear the youngsters are re-forming the notorious “firms” of the 70s and 80s – gangs such as West Ham’s Inter City Firm and Chelsea’s Headhunters who meticulously planned violent attacks on rivals.ACPO says it costs them up to £25million to deal with football matches, but last season they recovered only £12-15million from clubs. They claim the rest is being met by the taxpayer.Assistant Chief Constable Holt said that in the past year violent incidents on match days did seem to be more organised. The new breed of thug is known to use the internet and mobile phones to organise fights. He added: “Young supporters are reviving the names of the firms and gangs of the 70s and 80s and are beginning to take a mis-placed sense of pride and being by joining these groups.”What is alarming is they are beginning to form into well organised gangs who are not just turning up on match days looking for trouble but are planning days and weeks in advance.”

Violence

Police say they are particularly focused on violence in the lower leagues where clubs have fewer crowd control resources.Acpo’s figures show 47 per cent of incidents of disorder last season involved youths. But it stresses while the rise of young hooligans is worrying, the overall rate of violence is a long way from the bad old days.Mr Holt added: “I am not suggesting we are going to return to the awful scenes we got used to seeing. But there is a rise and unless we realise it now and act it will continue to rise.”Soccer bosses say fans are safer than ever and point to Home Office figures for 2008/09 which show just 1.18 arrests per match.A Premier League spokesman said: “We should never be complacent on hooliganism but the fact is it’s been a declining issue in English football for decades.”
