Newcastle 6 – 0 Aston Villa
Andy Carroll grabbed a hat-trick and Kevin Nolan scored twice as Newcastle thrashed Aston Villa.
Joey Barton gave the Magpies the lead when he thumped in from 20 yards before Nolan headed in on the half-hour mark and Carroll drilled in to make it 3-0.Carroll volleyed his second from 12 yards after the break, Nolan hooked in the fifth from close range before Carroll swept in his third late on.John Carew wasted Villa’s best chance when he blazed his penalty over at 0-0.Had Villa converted their early penalty then the game may have taken on a different complexion.Newcastle’s major frailty remains their lack of pace and that was exposed early on by speedy forward Ashley Young.
606: DEBATE
|
Villa’s most potent threat won a penalty for his side in the ninth minute when he was brought down by keeper Steve Harper after Young had been picked out by Stiliyan Petrov.Norway international Carew stepped up but smashed his penalty high over Harper’s crossbar. The scare woke Newcastle up and moments later Barton, who promised to shave off his moustache once his side recorded their first league win, scored a spectacular opener on 12 minutes.
The former Manchester City midfielder picked up a pass from winger Jonas Gutierrez on the left before drifting inside and hitting a 20-yarder that dipped late and flew through Brad Friedel’s hands.Up until then Villa had enjoyed more than 60% of the possession but that dominance dwindled as Newcastle’s confidence grew.Their second goal came after 30 minutes, when left-back Jose Enrique surged forward and whipped in a cross that found Carroll at the far post. He nodded back for Nolan, whose initial header was saved by Friedel but then stayed composed to head in the rebound. Two minutes later the Newcastle faithful were in jubilant mood as Carroll swept in after Richard Dunne had failed to clear Mike Williamson’s cushioned header from Barton’s corner.
It was expected that Villa would come out firing after the break, but that never materialised and Newcastle continued to run the game. They charged forward again and scored their fourth when Williamson won a tussle on the edge of the area and found 6ft 3in Carroll who outmuscled his defender, kept his eye on the ball and fired in a low volley. It was reminiscent of former Magpies number nine Alan Shearer in his pomp.Newcastle already had four on the board but never would they have envisaged matching Arsenal’s and Chelsea’s 6-0 wins over Blackpool and Wigan this weekend.
But four soon became six in the final few minutes. First, the industrious Nolan bravely hooked in from inside the six-yard area and then Carroll put his own stamp on an unforgettable day by converting substitute Xisco’s pass from 12 yards.

Hibernian 0 – 3 Rangers
By Andy Campbell

Rangers emerged as victors from an ill-tempered Scottish Premier League match with Hibernian at Easter Road.
A scrappy first half of few chances ended with Rangers’ Kyle Lafferty and Hibs’ Kevin McBride sent off for violent conduct by referee Iain Brines.Kenny Miller fired Rangers ahead on 64 minutes before adding a second six minutes later following Vladimir Weiss’s inventive set-up play. And the Scotland forward swept home in injury time to complete his hat-trick.Both sides were looking to maintain winning starts to the season after each claimed three points in last week’s opening SPL fixtures. And the game also marked the opening of Hibs’ new East Stand.
Miller scored a hat-trick
|
The major flashpoint of the game saw Lafferty committing a reckless tackle on Liam Miller and, as the ball went loose, McBride kicked the ball against the Rangers player, which resulted in an angry exchange between the pair.Players from both teams stepped in to break up the altercation before Brines produced his red card for a double dismissal.
Riordan’s fierce drive was claimed at the second attempt by McGregor in the opening minutes of the second period.Rangers moved to the other end and Steven Naismith got to the by-line to cross for Miller to head over at the back post.Danny Galbraith replaced Riordan, who had been unable to recover from an earlier collision with Bougherra, and the substitute beat McGregor to a long ball to cross for Edwin De Graaf, who was waiting to tap home. But Bougherra nicked the ball away from the Dutchman inside the six-yard box moments before Rangers moved ahead.Sasa Papac’s shot deflected off two players and was beaten out by Brown only for the ball to be collected by James Beattie, who laid the ball back for Kenny Miller to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.
On-loan Manchester City winger Weiss made his Rangers debut as a replacement for Beattie and played a major part in the visitors’ second. The Slovakian collected the ball on the left, played a swift one-two with Davis and put the ball on a plate for Kenny Miller to sidefoot home.Liam Miller was on the receiving end of another poor challenge, this time by Bougherra, and the Algerian was promptly booked.Brown made saves to deny Naismith and Maurice Edu as Rangers continued to press. And, as the game entered its third minute of stoppage time, Kenny Miller received a Davis pass and raced in on goal to find the far corner and complete his first treble since returning to Rangers.
