Liverpool 2 0 Rabotnicki Skopje (agg 4 – 0)

David Ngog scores the opener
French striker Ngog nods in an early opener to set up Liverpool’s easy victory

By Mark Ashenden

Joe Cole impressed on his competitive debut as Liverpool booked their spot in the Europa League play-offs draw with a 4-0 aggregate win over Rabotnicki.

Cole’s curling cross after a corner set up David Ngog to nod in before the French striker soon created the second.Ngog was hauled down by Fernando Lopes and the re-called Steven Gerrard poked home the penalty as half-time loomed.Rabotnicki’s best efforts came late on with Martin Kelly denying Marcio and Filip Petkovski hitting the post.Liverpool’s future ownership may remain uncertain, with several parties reportedly keen on replacing Tom Hicks and George Gillett, but on the pitch the team look in relatively healthy shape. It may not be Europe’s premier event, but Roy Hodgson will be delighted with his team’s efforts on the night he strode into Anfield for his first home match as manager.

Motherwell 3 0 Aalesunds FK (agg 4 – 1)

Jamie Murphy
Jamie Murphy set Motherwell on their way with his seventh goal in Europe

Jamie Murphy was on target as Motherwell progressed in the Europa League with an impressive win over Norwegian outfit Aalesunds.

The striker gave ‘Well a dream start after four minutes when he collected Chris Humphrey’s cross and fired home a superb effort into the top corner.Craig Brown’s men were warming to the task and John Sutton swept home a Steve Saunders centre to double their lead.’Well breezed into the play-offs with a late Jonathan Page strike. The Steelmen were eager to banish the disappointment of conceding an injury-time goal in last week’s first leg in Norway. And they came haring out of the traps at Fir Park as they looked to take the lead in the tie.Murphy, who was also on target in the 1-1 draw in Norway, gave the hosts the lead with a superb early strike.

The white-hot forward took one touch after good work from Humphrey and his shot flew past the helpless Anders Lindegaard for his third goal in Europe this season and seventh overall.Aalesunds were struggling for creativity in the absence of injured winger Demar Philips and Motherwell doubled their lead in 13 minutes. The ball was worked down the right and Saunders’s driven cross was swept home by Sutton. The Norwegians tried unsuccessfully to breach the Motherwell rearguard as they found the home defence and goalkeeper Darren Randolph in superb form.Substitute Page, who had replaced Sutton, grabbed ‘Well’s third goal when he was fed by the unselfish Murphy to stroke the ball into an empty net.

Hibernian 2 3 NK Maribor (agg 2 – 6)

Hibernian v NK Maribor
Brazilian forward Marcos Tavares opened the scoring at Easter Road

Hibernian exited Europe after stumbling to defeat by NK Maribor in the Europa League qualifier at Easter Road.

An already difficult task following a 3-0 defeat in Slovenia was made nigh on impossible when Marcos Tavares headed the visitors in front after 20 minutes.Edwin De Graaf pulled Hibs level, deflecting the ball into the net. However, Dejan Mezga converted a penalty and Tavares added a third for Maribor before De Graaf scored a late consolation for John Hughes’s side.Hibernian manager Hughes made four changes to his side, with Sol Bamba brought back into the squad after being forced to train with the youth team.Graeme Smith started in goal with Graham Stack injured, and Hughes restored strikers Derek Riordan and Anthony Stokes to his starting eleven. The home side started positively, but, despite plenty of early pressure, none of the Hibs forward line managed to carve out a clear opportunity.Dutch winger De Graaf took matters into his own hands and rocketed a shot from just outside the box, but his rasping effort flew just wide of the post.De Graaf then played the ball into Riordan, but the forward’s effort was blocked by the Slovenian defence. The former Netherlands B international De Graaf was proving influential as Hibs dominated, but he spurned a great chance shooting straight at goalkeeper Marko Pridigar. However, against the run of play Maribor landed a sucker punch, with forward Marcos Tavares heading the ball past Smith to make it 4-0 on aggregate. The Easter Road men began to look nervous as Maribor began to dictate the pace of the game, with the home defence looking vulnerable to set pieces.Dalibor Volas then burst past the Hibs defence, but his dipping long-range effort flew harmlessly over the bar.Dejan Mezga then passed up a great chance to double Maribor’s lead, but he could only hit the post with a bending effort following a shambles in the Hibs defence.Smith then had to look lively to put a shot from Armin Bacinovic past the post as the Slovenes took control of the match.Hibs signalled their intent early in the second half when Riordan fired in a looping effort but it went straight to Pridigar.De Graaf pulled a goal back for Hibs out of nowhere when he deflected a Stokes effort past Pridigar to pull the home side level.Colin Nish was then set up perfectly in the box, but could only head weakly wide with the goal at his mercy.A good build-up by Hibs then led to Stokes being played through in the box, but the Irishman’s shot across the face of goal was smothered at the second attempt by Pridigar. But any hopes Hibs had of getting back into the tie ended when Kevin McBride brought down Mezga in the box with the referee pointing to the spot. The Croatian midfielder converted the penalty, sending Smith the wrong way.As the game tailed off Hibs gave the ball away in midfield and the Slovenes made the counter-attack count, with Tavares drilling the ball home to make it 6-1 on aggregate. The impressive De Graaf handed some pride back for Hibs when he lashed the ball into the roof of the net after a fine knock down from Colin Nish to claim his second goal of the night.

……PORTA SOTTO L’OMBRELLONE……
