Several Grimsby Town ‘fans’ banned for Burton Albion violence

SHOCKING scenes of disorder at Grimsby Town‘s clash with Burton Albion have been shown in court as the first five defendants were sentenced for their part in the violence.ìA former Marine and a student teacher were among the five Mariners fans in the dock at Burton Magistrates’ Court in the first of a series of hearings which police hope will bring up to 50 yobs to justice.Magistrates viewed a 20-minute video montage from the game at the Pirelli Stadium on May 8, which saw Grimsby condemned to relegation from the Football League.The video, comprising police and BBC television footage along with scenes posted on the internet by a Grimsby fan, showed fans invading the pitch after the game, scuffling with police and stewards and hurling advertising hoardings.

In a statement read out in court, Gary Lote, football intelligence officer for Staffordshire Police, said the fans had been like “a pack of dogs” and had “kicked, punched and assaulted police officers and thrown missiles without regard to the serious injury which could have been caused“.The banning orders mean the defendants are barred from Grimsby and Cleethorpes town centres and the area around the club’s ground on match days from a period of three hours before to three hours after kick-off.They are also banned from visiting any town or city where Grimsby, or the England national team are playing, and from using the rail network anywhere in England and Wales on match days.Speaking after the hearing, Sergeant Nigel Roberts said: “We hope this sends out a clear message to those intending to cause violence at football games. It won’t be tolerated. People should be able to take their children to the match without having to witness these kind of scenes.
