England fan who invaded team’s dressing room sees case adjourned

A SUPPORTER accused of trespassing after he entered England’s dressing room must wait until next week at the earliest to hear his fate, he learned today.PJ, 32, from Crystal Palace, south east London, appeared at a special World Cup court in Cape Town this morning where his case was adjourned until Wednesday. His solicitor Craig Webster requested the adjournment because his defence team is still awaiting CCTV footage from the stadium on the night of England’s 0-0 draw against Algeria. At a previous hearing, J was banned from attending any more World Cup matches, his passport was seized and he was released on £44 bail.Mr Webster asked magistrate Aziz Hamied to postpone the case until next Wednesday, when he expects to be in possession of the footage.Mr Hamied said: “We will adjourn the matter until June 30, next Wednesday, which will either be for the representation, which if successful will be the end of the matter. Alternatively, we will be at trial.”Joseph was arrested after the incident at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town.He said later he was looking for a toilet after the match when a security guard sent him in the direction of the players’ tunnel. After taking a wrong turn, he found himself in the changing room where he says he told David Beckham: “David, we’ve spent a lot of money getting here. This is a disgrace. What are you going to do about it?”The incident, which happened minutes after Princes William and Harry left, prompted the Football Association (FA) to make an official complaint to World Cup organiser Fifa.A spokeswoman for the UK policing team in South Africa has said a football banning order would not be pursued because the incident was not linked to violent behaviour.Joseph, a life-long England and Manchester United supporter, told the Sunday Mirror that when Beckham asked him who he was, he responded: “I’m P. and I actually need the toilet.”He said he then addressed the players, who were sitting on benches with towels around their waists.”I told them ‘That was woeful and not good enough’. The room was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. The players’ chins were on their chests – they looked pretty ashamed.”The story is reminiscent of the “Smithy” sketch performed by James Corden, in which the comedian confronts the players to psyche them up.Joseph, surrounded by photographers, declined to make a statement upon leaving court.

England fans missed the winning goal due to a power black-out

Thousands of football fans missed the goal that took England into the second round at the World Cup after a power cut affected parts of south-west London. The black-out struck Richmond and Twickenham at 3:20 on Wednesday – 20 minutes into the Three Lions’ make-or-break Group C clash with Slovenia.Striker Jermain Defoe scored what proved to be the winning goal in the match at Port Elizabeth on 23 minutes, meaning fans at pubs in the area were left watching blank screens.Energy supplier EDF took the blame for the chaos and said it was down to a fault on a high-voltage cable network. The company apologised for the incident, which cut power for more than an hour.An EDF spokesman said: “EDF Energy Networks would like to apologise to several thousand customers in the Twickenham area who lost power supplies at 3.20pm after a fault on the electricity distribution network. The first customers had power again within six minutes with all supplies back on, in stages, by 4.38pm. We recognise this incident will have affected viewing of England’s World Cup match and our engineers worked as quickly and as safely as possible to restore supplies.”

Police payout after fans ‘locked in’ pub before match

Eighty football fans have shared nearly £200,000 in compensation and won an apology from police who trapped them in a pub before a Manchester United game. The Stoke City supporters said they were told to “urinate into cups” after officers banned them from the toilet at the pub in Irlam, Greater Manchester. They were then put on coaches and taken back to Stoke-on-Trent just hours before kick-off in November 2008.

Greater Manchester Police admitted acting “erroneously”.

Under section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act, police are allowed to give directions to individuals who represent a risk of disorder. However, the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF), which represented many of the fans, said they were not causing any trouble in the pub.An FSF spokesman said they even spoke to the pub landlord who said the supporters were so well-behaved he would make them sandwiches if they returned.

Ironically Stoke lost the match 5-0, so they did not miss too much

Malcolm Clarke Chair of the FSF

Malcolm Clarke, chair of the FSF, said: “The police imprisoned these fans in a pub and refused to allow them to use the toilets.”They then illegally served them with notices, hired some coaches and just deposited them in the middle of Stoke – they broke the law and now they are paying out for it.”Ironically Stoke lost the match 5-0, so they did not miss too much and many of the fans can use the compensation for their season tickets.”The total amount paid out to the 80 supporters was £184,850, the police confirmed.GMP said it had acted on “intelligence” but admitted that officers’ actions were heavy-handed.Every person awarded compensation has also received a letter of apology from Assistant Chief Constable Ian Hopkins.GMP’s deputy director of legal services Sian Williams said: “We have paid damages to complainants after finding that we had erroneously used powers under section 27 Violent Crime Reduction Act in November 2008.”At the time the use of the powers was new and we have since taken steps to improve our understanding of the legislation to try to prevent this from happening again; by dealing with the cases within legal services, we made a saving on handling fees of over £16,000.

England fans out-sing the vuvuzelas

IANS     Thursday 24th June, 2010

England’s victory Wednesday over Slovenia set up what could turn out to be another memorable clash between the two greatest rivals of world football, England and Germany. But on the terraces of the Port Elizabeth stadium, and the streets of the coastal industrial city, England’s army of travelling fans also notched up a famous victory of their own.Whether blaring out the national anthem, or bawling out old World War II songs to antagonize their opponents in the next round, the roar of England’s supporters for once drowned out the blasted Vuvuzela cacophony that has been the ever-present soundtrack of this year’s World Cup.An estimated 25,000 fans packed into the stadium named after Nelson Mandela. They covered it with flags glorifying their national team and their home towns, and used other flags as capes as they marched to the stadium looking for all the world like an army of footballing crusaders. After England’s abysmal performance against Algeria these most loyal and long-suffering of supporters had booed their team from the pitch. Their displeasure prompted an angry and scandalous reaction from out-of-sorts striker Wayne Rooney, but it may have also catalyzed the superstar England players to re-examine their approach and commitment to the next game.Captain Steve Gerrard admitted as much when he said the fans reaction was justified, and had spurred the players to regain the hunger that personifies the English game. And if the travelling fans had been resentful towards their heroes after the Algeria debacle, they bore no grudges when the team stepped out on to the lumpy playing field of Port Elizabeth. The roar that greeted the team as it stepped on to the pitch, and the announcement of the line-up drowned out the vuvuzelas. But it was nothing compared to the sound of the English football army belting out God Save the Queen at the top of their voices, as if they wanted to be heard all the way to Buckingham Palace.Their support was crucial, said midfielder Frank Lampard.’After all the negative things that have been said in the press, some fans could have been less vocal and less supportive,’ he said.’But they weren’t, the stadium was basically all England today. It was like a home game for us and that really lifted the lads. When they support the team in that way they are the best.’The singing continued long after the victory had been achieved, in the stadium, the Port Elizabeth streets, and the pubs and bars that had been overrun by the invading English hordes. It continued incongruously also in a posh hotel ballroom, that had been converted into an ad-hoc football viewing arena, where football fanatics could guzzle down beer and wine, and dine on sushi and rump steak while watching their favourite sport on a giant TV screen. For the Germany-Ghana game Wednesday evening, the place was packed with well-heeled England fans, delirious with victory and booze, and with a small cadre of German journalists. The England fans cheered Ghana almost as fervently as they had cheered their own team earlier on, and taunted the Germans with songs about the RAF shooting down German bombers in WWII.The outnumbered Germans mostly ignored the taunts, until their team scored what turned out to be the winner, when they turned back to face their tormentors and defiantly punch the air in victory. But when the final whistle blew there were handshakes all around and one chant from the sozzled England fans. ‘Bring on the Germans,’ they sang into the night. ‘Bring on the Germans.’

A casual buy no. 20

June 25, 2010 by The Hovian

Picked up yet another pair of white trainers, I really have to re-think my white leather fetish. But at least these are special, a BNIB pair of the 2009 re-issue of the adidas Kegler Super.

The original Keglers were innovative in that they introduced to the world the ‘Peg System’ – which allowed the wearer to change the feel of the shoe to suit whatever activity they were partaking in. Oddly, no-one ever explained what these settings were; what was best for walking, playing footy, climbing trees or even being on your toes after nicking sweets from the corner shop? So, a gimmick, but a nice harmless one.

The 2009 re-issues were in a blue-red-blue colourway and the leather was perforated, and they sold out in no time. So, I’ll be treating these with kid gloves – no trekking through the mud between the Station pub to Withdean in them. It will be hard not to slip them on more, because these are the most comfortable and good-looking trainers I’ve worn in many a year.

PORTA SOTTO L’OMBRELLONE……….
