Hotel rooms, flights and match tickets all in short supply

England fans were wrong footed after the team failed to top its qualifying group and play the next match in Rustenburg. But the last-minute USA goal changed everything, ensuring England will face Germany in Bloemfontein on Sunday. As of last night, there was not a hotel room to be found in the city. Flights were hard to come by, with many fans expected to stay in Johannesburg, four hours away, and drive there and back in a day. There will also be a scramble for tickets. Many fans have tickets to the Rustenburg match and are now looking to swap them.

Bullish England Fans: ‘Bring On The Germans’

Fans who watched England put in a vastly improved performance to progress to the knockout stages of the World Cup say they have got what it takes to beat Germany in the next round.Fabio Capello’s men beat Slovenia 1-0 with a strike from Jermain Defoe, and were heading through as group winners until a last-gasp goal for the USA in the other Group C game. That put the Americans top of the group on goals scored – and lined up an English showdown with Germany, who topped their group thanks to a thunderbolt strike from Mesut Ozil that settled their game against Ghana.England had started the game in Nelson Mandela Bay nervily, the criticism from their disappointing 0-0 draw against Algeria still ringing in their ears, but grew in confidence as the first half progressed. It was two new additions to the starting line-up who struck the crucial blow, Defoe meeting a James Milner cross to provide the breakthrough England so desperately needed. The goal seemed to lift a weight from the players’ shoulders and for lengthy spells afterwards they were totally dominant, stroking the ball about like a team with the potential to do real damage in this competition. It was what the fans had been waiting for too and for once their singing drowned out the drone of the vuvuzelas, choruses of God Save The Queen and England ‘Till I Die echoing round the ground.Their dominance could not be converted into goals, however, with Wayne Rooney hitting a post and another fluid move finishing with the ball in the net but also with the linesman’s flag raised.Nerves returned towards the final whistle, but when the referee finally blew for time the boos of Cape Town were forgotten as the England faithful stayed in the stands to roar their appreciation. It also meant many fans who had expected England to win what looked on paper to be an easy group have been left facing a scramble to get travel, accommodation and tickets swapped from Rustenburg on Saturday to Bloemfontein on Sunday.Peter Griffiths – a British expat originally from Manchester but now living in Johannesburg – said he had three tickets for the Rustenburg game he no longer wanted and would be trying to swap them with an American fan. After the Slovenia game Ben Goldthorpe, 27, from Islington, said he was looking forward to the clash with Germany – adding that a win would make his World Cup, no matter what happened afterwards. He said: “If we go home with a win against Germany, no one will really mind if we go out in the later rounds.”Paul Tovey, a lawyer from London, said: “I feel positive about it. We can put them out. I don’t think we need to be scared of Germany.”Nick Smith, 52, a surveyor from Guildford, said he thought England would raise their game against superior opposition. He said: “The performances so far haven’t been entirely convincing but hopefully we will come good when it really matters.”The rivalry between Germany and England has produced some classic encounters in the past, including the 1966 final, when a Geoff Hurst hat-trick saw the Three Lions claim their only world title.Germany have won three World Cups and knocked the English out on penalties at Italia ’90 and on their home turf at Euro ’96, going on to claim the title on both occasions.English fans however will not be slow to remind them of a 5-1 humbling in Berlin in qualifying for Euro 2002, when Michael Owen scored a hat-trick.

Nicolas Anelka signs contract extension with Chelsea

Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka has signed a one-year contract extension to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2012.

“When I first came to Chelsea I wanted to stay much longer than I did in the past with other clubs,” Anelka told the Premier League champions’ website.”There is no need to move anymore so I am very glad to sign a new contract.“Anelka, 31, recently caused controversy when he was sent home from the World Cup squad after verbally insulting France coach Raymond Domenech. He clashed with Domenech during France’s 2-0 defeat against Mexico and ordered home from South Africa after refusing to apologise despite being asked to do so by French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes.

606: DEBATE

It was a low point in a dismal World Cup campaign by the 1998 winners and they failed to win a single match as they went out after the first-round group stage.

France’s early exit could work in Chelsea’s favour as Anelka has extra time to prepare for the new season after helping the team achieve a league and FA Cup double in May.The former Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal player has scored 42 goals in 123 appearances for Chelsea since joining them from Bolton in 2008.”Nicolas is a fantastic player who has good technical qualities and movement,” said manager Carlo Ancelotti.’When I was coach at Juventus I wanted to buy him, so it is good now he has signed for me and I think Chelsea is his home. I look forward to working with him for one year more.’
