Due formazioni  avevano raggiunto la finale delle coppe nazionali di Inghilterra e Scozia sfidando ogni pronostico: il Portsmouth ed il Ross County. Il Ross County, invece, è stato travolto con un secco tre a zero.Tredici persone sono state arrestate in relazione agli incidenti accaduti nel mese di aprile tra le tifoserie dell’ Huddersfield e del Millwall. I tifosi, di entrambe le squadre, sono finiti in manette nelle immediate imminenze della doppia sfida valida per i play off di “League One” tra le due formazioni. Sul campo la sfida si è conclusa con un nulla di fatto che rinvia tutto al match di ritorno.

Three second-half goals saw a dominant Dundee United side win the Scottish Cup with victory over Ross County.

United shaded a low-key first half against their First Division opponents but struggled to pressure Michael McGovern in the County goal.David Goodwillie broke the deadlock with a stunning lob after McGovern rushed from his box to head clear.And Craig Conway’s late double saw United secure the Scottish Cup for the second time in their history.It was a nervous opening 10 minutes from both sides in the 125th Scottish Cup, as they struggled to establish any rhythm on the sun-kissed Hampden pitch.United voiced half-hearted penalty appeals when Danny Swanson tumbled under Alex Keddie’s challenge but referee Dougie McDonald was unimpressed.Gary Miller was the first name in the referee’s book after 22 minutes for scything down Dundee United striker Goodwillie.But United failed to profit from a promising set-piece as Garry Kenneth headed well over the bar from Craig Conway’s accurate centre.County, who accounted for Scottish Premier League sides Hibs and Celtic en-route to the final, were determined not to allow United to get into their stride, as the First Division outfit hunted Tangerine jerseys in hungry packs.United came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock 10 minutes before the break.Goodwillie played a clever one-two with Swanson and the latter bore down on goal after tearing through the Ross County midfield.But the back-tracking Keddie made a goal-saving challenge on the scampering United midfielder and the danger was cleared.

Conway found himself free down the left-hand side moments later and his cross found Prince Buaben, but his header lacked power to trouble County keeper McGovern.And United spurned a great chance to take the lead seconds before half-time when Goodwillie dithered in the box before the impressive Keddie nipped the ball away for a corner.It was one-way traffic towards the County goal and Jon Daly sent a header straight at McGovern in the last chance of the half.The second half began in similar fashion to the first: with United pinning their conservative opponents in their own half for long spells without seriously testing McGovern.United midfielder Morgaro Gomis sent in a deep cross and the stretching Swanson could not get his header on target.Goodwillie broke the deadlock with a stunning lob from just outside the penalty area after County keeper McGovern raced from his line to head clear.Falling behind stung County into action and Jimmy Scott forced Dusan Pernis into his first save of the game in the 68th minute as Derek Adams’s side searched for an equaliser.Conway added a second when he collected Goodwillie’s headed flick and sped away from the County defence before sliding a left-foot shoot under the on-rushing McGovern.United’s second goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of County, who in truth had been a shadow of the side who knocked out Celtic and Hibs in a memorable cup run.Conway grabbed his second and United’s third when he controlled Gomis’s accurate flick and arrowed a shot into the bottom corner beyond the helpless McGovern.Peter Houston’s side saw out the rest of the game comfortably as the United fans celebrated only their second-ever Scottish Cup final victory, while the subdued County followers wondered what could have been.

It was a tight contest between the League One teams

Millwall had two penalty appeals turned down as they held Huddersfield in the first leg of their League One play-off at the Galpharm Stadium.

The first of those occurred in the opening half when Scott Barron’s shot appeared to strike the raised hand of defender Peter Clarke.Millwall were denied again by referee Darren Deadman when Barron fell under the challenge of Clarke.The Terriers went close through Jordan Rhodes and Danny Drinkwater.Striker Rhodes scooped over from six yards from Lee Novak’s right-wing cross before Danny Drinkwater, on loan from Manchester United, forced goalkeeper David Forde to push his curling 25-yard free-kick around the post.Millwall barely ventured into the Huddersfield area and the closest they came in the opening 45 minutes was when referee Deadman dismissed their penalty appeal much to the annoyance of manager Kenny Jackett.

The Lions improved after the break and had the ball in the net, but via the hand of striker Neil Harris who was shown a yellow card for his indiscretion.Apart from that chance and the penalty appeal, Millwall produced little to get the away support excited in the closing stages while Lee Clark’s Huddersfield failed to trouble Forde.The return leg is at the New Den is on Tuesday 18 May.

Huddersfield Town and Millwall fans arrested after Waterloo violence

SUSPECTED HOOLIGANS who clashed before Huddersfield Town’s last game against Millwall have been arrested – hours before the two clubs were due to meet in the play-offs.Police arrested 13 fans from both clubs – including a 14-year-old Huddersfield boy – in swoops in London and Huddersfield on Wednesday and yesterday.And police have confirmed more than 20 others are still being sought.All those arrested were given police bail with strict orders to stay away from the League One play-off games at the Galpharm at 12.15pm today and at Millwall at 7.45pm on Tuesday.The action follows a mass brawl involving up to 60 people outside the Waterloo Tavern pub on Wakefield Road in Waterloo on April 16.Det Insp Jim Griffiths, who has been leading a special team set up to investigate the ugly incident, said the crackdown should send out a message.“This kind of violence will not be tolerated,” he said.“We have clearly shown by the arrests we have made this week that it won’t be tolerated in Huddersfield and any future disorder of this type will be dealt with just as vigorously and in the same manner.”The violence on April 16 flared as Millwall fans arrived for the last meeting of the two sides of the regular season.Missiles were thrown at a passing Millwall coach which had stopped at the lights.Other mini buses carrying Millwall fans then arrived, the cue for a mass fight. Opposing fans then fought running battles along Wakefield Road with pool cues, bottles and bricks.Det Insp Griffiths said the incident shocked innocent members of the public – but had not been pre-planned.“There were a number of people just going home or going about their daily business,” he said.
