Millwall cleared, West Ham charged over Cup clashes

West Ham United fans invaded the pitch twice during the 2-1 extra time victory over Millwall

By Alistair Potter.

League One side Millwall will face no further action from the Football Association over crowd trouble that marred their League Cup tie against West Ham last year. However, the Hammers have been called to defend two charges of failing to ensure their supporters refrained from violent, threatening, obscene and provocative behaviour and a failure to ensure their supporters did not enter the field of play. The fixture at Upton Park on August 25th 2009 was marred by issues with supporters, which included two separate pitch invasions by the home fans and clashes with police and stewards inside and outside the stadium. The FA’s regulatory commission initially charged Millwall with failing to control their supporters and violent conduct outside the ground. But after an investigation and an appeal by the New Den outfit, the club have been cleared of all charges. Millwall chief executive Andy Ambler said: “Millwall FC welcomes the verdict in respect of our club as we have always maintained that we were innocent of the charges. “As ever this club condemns all misbehaviour within football stadia and works tirelessly to eradicate misconduct and to continue to change an unfair and distorted misconception of Millwall Football Club and its fans. “We thank the FA commission panel for their judgement and we will make no further comment until we receive and consider their full statement on the matter, which we anticipate will be on Friday.” West Ham, however, face two charges and will be called in front of the commission on Friday. If found guilty, the Premier League side could be forced to pay a fine or, worse, play some future games behind closed doors. The findings of the panel do mean that the Hammers will not have to face two other charges that were initially levied, including failing to ensure their supporters do not partake in racist behaviour and failing to ensure their supporters did not throw missiles onto the field of play.
