Carling Cup – West Ham found guilty over Millwall crowd trouble

PA SportWed, 13 Jan 12:57:00 2010

Millwall have been cleared of all charges however and both clubs have had charges of failing to prevent racist behaviour by fans declared as “not proven” by an disciplinary panel. The FA’s independent regulatory commission will decide West Ham’s punishment on Friday after finding the club guilty of two charges: failure to ensure their supporters refrained from violent, threatening, obscene and provocative behaviour, and failure to ensure their supporters did not enter the field of play.West Ham face a range of possible sanctions including being forced to play games behind closed doors and a heavy fine. The violent clashes led to 64 arrests and the stabbing of a Millwall fan outside Upton Park, and there were pitch invasions during the match. An FA statement read: “The commission will reconvene this Friday (January 15) to consider the issue of sanctions. The FA will now await the full written reasons from the independent commission before making any further comment.”

Aston Villa took a giant stride towards Wembley as James Milner’s first-half winner gave them victory in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Blackburn Rovers.Milner rounded off a devastating break after 23 minutes when he turned in Stewart Downing’s cross as Villa swept the length of the field. It gave Martin O’Neill side a deserved advantage and provided a rich reward for Villa’s attacking strategy as they dominated a jaded Blackburn side playing their second game this week.Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce felt the full force of Ewood Park’s fury as his side laboured to make any impression on Villa in the early exchanges, with the half-time whistle being greeted by a chorus of jeering.

Liverpool 1 2 Reading

Shane Long scores Reading's winner
Long (far right) heads home Reading’s extra-time winner

By Phil Dawkes

An extra-time goal from Shane Long capped a stunning comeback for Championship strugglers Reading as they knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup.

Liverpool fortuitously took the lead when Ryan Bertrand deflected Steven Gerrard’s cross into his own net.In second-half injury time Reading were rewarded for their endeavour throughout when Gylfi Sigurdsson levelled from the spot after a foul on substitute Long.Long’s extra-time header proved the decisive blow to send Reading through. This was Reading’s first victory at Anfield and it was fully deserved as they out-worked their under-par Premier League opponents to book a fourth-round tie at home to Burnley. The result places even more pressure on under-fire Reds boss Rafael Benitez who will also be concerned that star duo Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard failed to finish the match due to injury.
