In Inghilterra la “FA Cup” riproponeva la “classicissima” tra Man U e Leeds, incredibilmente vinta all’ “Old Trafford” dai “bianchi”, primi in graduatoria in terza serie. Massime le misure di sicurezza previste per l’ incontro da parte delle autorità preposte all’ ordine pubblico.

Rangers retained their seven-point lead in the Scottish Premier League after a controversial backs-to-the-wall draw against second-top city rivals Celtic.

Celtic were left angered when Marc-Antoine Fortune had a goal chopped off for a foul on keeper Allan McGregor. And Rangers’ Kyle Lafferty was fortunate not to be sent off for a lunging challenge on Andreas Hinkel.Scott McDonald headed Celtic into a deserved lead after 79 minutes, but Lee McCulloch matched that seconds later. It had been Rangers’ first effort on target but secured a draw that will leave the blue half of Glasgow the happier, retaining a cushion over a Celtic side who have a game in hand.Celtic manager Tony Mowbray had sprung a surprise ahead of kick-off by dropping striker McDonald and starting Fortune up front along with Georgios Samaras.

Police on alert for Man Utd-Leeds clash

3/01/2010 – 12:33:36
A huge security operation will be in place today for Manchester United’s clash with bitter rivals Leeds, police said.

The two clubs will meet for the first time in five years for the hotly-anticipated FA Cup third round tie at Old Trafford, which kicks off at 1pm.

Officers are on high alert for trouble, with more than 8,000 Leeds fans expected to descend on Manchester for the clash.Greater Manchester Police have spent several weeks preparing for the encounter, which they are treating as “high risk”.Supt John Graves, the match commander, warned that anyone arriving at the stadium drunk is likely to face police action. He also urged anyone who does not have a ticket to stay away from the ground.“It has been several years since these clubs met and this is a highly-anticipated fixture for both sets of fans. Our aim is to help make the occasion a safe and enjoyable one for everyone involved,” he said.“Everyone connected with this event has a responsibility to do all they can to make this a safe and enjoyable occasion, especially local businesses and travel operators.“In recent weeks we have been asking local pubs and off-licences to limit their sales and opening times, and advising coach operators of the dangers of transporting drunken fans.”Both clubs have liaised with the Football Association and police forces in Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire in an attempt to stop trouble, he said.“Of the tens of thousands of fans who will be watching the game, it is only a small minority who may try to cause trouble and spoil it for everyone, and we will not hesitate to make arrests of troublemakers,” he added.

Jermaine Beckford’s winner gave League One leaders Leeds a famous FA Cup victory over their fierce rivals Manchester United in a thrilling tie at Old Trafford.

Forty-two league places separate the two clubs following the Yorkshire club’s dramatic fall from grace during the last decade but Simon Grayson’s side showed the rate of their recent revival with a memorable triumph.Man Utd had never before lost in the third round of the Cup – or been knocked out of it by a lower-division side – during Sir Alex Ferguson’s 23-year reign as manager, but they began 2010 on the wrong end of their biggest upset in this competition since they were dumped out by Bournemouth in 1984.It was a fully-deserved win for Leeds too, who were full of endeavour coming forward before Beckford outpaced the Man Utd defence to score and, just as importantly, defended as if their lives depended on it afterwards.
