Brazil 1-0 England

By Phil McNulty

Wayne Rooney
England captain Wayne Rooney shows his frustration against Brazil

Nilmar’s header early in the second half condemned Fabio Capello’s reshaped England side to defeat against Brazil in Qatar.

England battled hard against a superior Brazil, but Nilmar headed Elano’s pass beyond Ben Foster after 47 minutes.Brazil’s victory margin could have been greater, but Luis Fabiano missed a penalty after Foster fouled Nilmar.Lucio also struck the post, while James Milner volleyed England’s best chance over the top in the second half.Capello will have been happy with how his under-strength side stuck to their task in searing heat, but Brazil had too much class and quality for England, who could not overcome the absence of so many high-profile stars.Brazil always held the upper hand, and even though this journey to Doha ended with a loss, England and Capello will benefit from being tested against many of the Brazil players who will pose a threat to their World Cup ambitions in South Africa next summer.

Capello’s heavily-disrupted plans were subjected to even further alteration late on when Michael Carrick suffered an ankle injury – allowing Jermaine Jenas to make a rare England start. And while England’s attacking forays were rare in the first 45 minutes, there was enough resilience and organisation on display to give Capello encouragement.Indeed England posed the first threat after only two minutes when a cross from Shaun Wright-Phillips flashed just out of the reach of England’s captain for the night Wayne Rooney.Lyon’s Michel Bastos was pressed into emergency service at left-back for Brazil following an injury to Liverpool’s Fabio Aurelio, and he demonstrated his attacking prowess with a low, angled drive that beat Foster but flew inches wide.Darren Bent was struggling to make an impact as he attempted to convince Capello of his worth, not helped by a lack of service that rendered his task almost impossible. He had one opportunity, but could not direct a header on target from James Milner’s cross.

Foster was then in action again, clutching a curling effort from Kaka as Brazil exerted their authority on proceedings.England would have been happy to reach half-time on level terms, but they were undone by a trademark piece of Brazilian creativity within two minutes of the restart.Former Manchester City midfield man Elano split Wes Brown and Matthew Upson with a glorious pass and Nilmar arrived to direct a header beyond Foster.Brazil had taken total control in the second half – and Bent’s tough night ended after 54 minutes when he was replaced by Jermain Defoe.England should have fallen further behind a minute later when Brown’s attempt to chest the ball back to Foster only let in Nilmar, who was hauled to the ground by Foster as he went around the England keeper.Capello’s side were handed a double reprieve as local referee Abdullah Abdou firstly declined to send Foster off, a surprising decision, and then Luis Fabiano lashed the resulting penalty yards over the bar.England had barely been seen as an attacking force in the game, but almost grabbed an unlikely equaliser after 68 minutes when another raking ball from Wright-Phillips found Milner at the far post, but he steered a volley over the top.Brown made amends for his earlier error with 14 minutes left by crucially blocking Nilmar’s header after Brazil caught England on the break. And England enjoyed more good fortune a minute later when defender Lucio advanced from the back and crashed a rising 25-yard drive against the post with Foster well beaten.Rooney then tested Brazil keeper Julio Cesar for almost the first time with a low shot that was comfortably collected.England attempted a late surge, but in reality Brazil were hardly ever disturbed and closed out with ease for a deserved victory.

Northern Ireland 0-1 Serbia

A classy goal from PSV Eindhoven striker Danko Lazovic was enough to give Serbia victory in Saturday’s friendly at Windsor Park.

Lazovic drilled in a low shot to cap a neat move in the 57th minute.Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Zoran Tosic had first-half efforts well saved by home goalkeeper Maik Taylor. In the second half Northern Ireland had chances to take the lead but Kyle Lafferty missed out in front of goal and Chris Brunt put a low shot wide.Defender Stephen Craigan then tried for his first international goal but saw his header saved by keeper Bojan Isailovic.

The result means Northern Ireland have won just twice in their last 20 friendlies.Having lost their last home game to Slovakia in a World Cup qualifier, Nigel Worthington’s men were keen to produce a good display.Keeper Taylor had to be alert in the ninth minute to tip over a shot from Zdravko Kuzmanovic.Niall McGinn then cut inside and tried his luck on goal but his shot was deflected for a corner by Aleksander Lukovic who could easily have scored an own goal.Manchester United defender Jonny Evans did not come out for the second half because of a calf injury.

His club colleague Nemanja Vidic also sat out the second half.Northern Ireland should have taken the lead in the 49th minute after good work by McGinn but Brunt sent his shot wide of the far post with his less-favoured right foot.Serbia took the lead in the 57th minute with a quality score.Lazovic fired past Taylor from the edge of the box after a great dummy from Gojko Kacar set him up following Tosic’s cross. However Northern Ireland threatened an equaliser six minutes later but Isailovic made a good block to keep out Craigan’s header.David Healy, relegated to the bench, came on in the 64th minute and soon scuffed a shooting chance wide of the mark. The out-of-touch Sunderland striker had a great chance late on but curled his shot just wide from the edge of the area.

Clashes after rival city marches

SDL protestors in Glasgow
Members of the SDL gathered in the city centre before being dispersed

Two rival marches have led to a number of minor skirmishes in Glasgow.

About 1,500 anti-racism protesters marched through the city under the banner Scotland United, in opposition to the Scottish Defence League (SDL).The SDL – an offshoot of the English Defence League – had been attempting to hold an “anti-Islamist” demonstration. There were clashes outside Central Station and at several points around the city centre. Police said they had made five arrests. The Scotland United rally, backed by trade unions, politicians and faith groups, gathered at Glasgow Green and marched to George Square.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was among those who attended the rally, organised to oppose the views of those involved with the SDL.Police said about 80 SDL protesters gathered in Cambridge Street, north of the city centre, and there were clashes.

The SDL protesters, some with their faces partly covered with scarves, sang songs and chanted “SDL” as they held their demonstration.Supporters of the controversial group, some waving flags or holding SDL banners, were surrounded by police officers who kept them apart from a group of counter-protesters who had congregated in the area.Shouts of “scum” were hurled in the direction of the SDL by some onlookers, while the group responded by clapping and waving at those who objected to their presence.Hundreds of police officers had gathered in Cambridge Street in a bid to prevent disruption during the static protest.

Dozens of police cars and vans lined the streets in the Cowcaddens area and police motorcyclists circled around the area while a police helicopter kept watch from above. The SDL demonstration ended when its protesters boarded buses to take them away from the area. The SDL were dispersed to other parts of the city, police said. There was later a heavy police presence in the Paisley Road area to the south of the city centre.Strathclyde Police estimated about 80 people took part in the SDL protest and said some 1,500 attended the Scotland United rally at George Square.Five men had been arrested – one in connection with an alleged racial breach of the peace in the Ibrox area. The other four were arrested in connection with alleged breaches of the peace in the city centre and in the Central Station area.

‘Minor incidents’

Assistant Chief Constable Fiona Taylor said: “This has been a successful operation for Strathclyde Police and our partners. Having two high profile demonstrations taking place in the city at the same time was always going to be a challenge. I am pleased to say that we met that challenge and that the day passed off with only minor incidents reported.”When planning for a day like today, we always have to strike a balance between protecting people’s right to peaceful protest and ensuring that the city continues to operate with the minimum of disruption to the people who live and work here. I believe we achieved just that.””I would like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation both in the run up to and during today’s events. The fact that they passed off without any major incident is a tribute to Glasgow and its people.”The English Defence League has held several demonstrations, including events in London, Manchester and Leeds, in recent months. The group describes accusations of racism or fascism as “flat-out untrue”.The SDL was formed in protest against Muslim “extremists” and “jihadists”, the group has said. It has accused the UK government is not taking significant action against the “Islamist assault” which the group claims is threatening British culture.
