Italy fans protest plans to issue ID cards
USA Today
14 November 2009

ROME (AP) — A few hundred fans have marched through central Rome to protest government plans to require police-approved identity cards for fans to enter reserved sections of stadiums. The Interior Ministry has said the cards offer benefits, such as priority in ticket purchases and a faster entrance to stadiums. But the cards are primarily a security measure since fans who have been convicted of violence in the past five years or been barred from matches won’t receive the police clearance necessary to get them.On Saturday, a few hundred fans from all over the country converged on Rome to denounce the cards. Many sported “No to the fan card” T-shirts and locked arms. The protest was clouded by smoke from flares, but was largely peaceful.

A MAJOR police operation was staged amid fears of disorder today as two rival demonstrations were held in a city.

Members of the Scottish Defence League demonstrate on Cambridge Street

Members of the Scottish Defence League (SDL), which claims to oppose Islamic militancy, held a protest in the Cambridge Street area of Glasgow.

Elsewhere in the city, hundreds of supporters of Scotland United – a group backed by politicians, trade unionists and faith groups – held a counter-demonstration to celebrate multi-culturalism and oppose the SDL demo.Police said five men have been arrested in connection with alleged breaches of the peace at different locations in the city.Around 70 supporters of the SDL – an offshoot the English Defence League – gathered on Cambridge Street earlier, near to the corner of Sauchiehall Street. The protesters, some with their faces partly covered with scarves, sang British songs and chanted “SDL” as they held their demo.Supporters of the controversial group, some waving flags or holding SDL banners, were surrounded by police officers who kept them apart from a group of counter-protesters who had congregated in the area.Shouts of “scum” were hurled in the direction of the SDL by some onlookers, while the group responded by clapping and waving at those who objected to their presence.Hundreds of police officers had gathered in Cambridge Street in a bid to prevent disruption during the static protest.Dozens of police cars and vans lined the streets in the Cowcaddens area and police motorcyclists circled around the area.A police helicopter kept watch on the streets from above. The demonstration ended when the SDL protesters boarded buses to take them away from the area.Strathclyde Police today estimated around 70 people took part in the SDL protest and said around 1,500 attended the Scotland United rally at George Square.A force spokeswoman said that five men have been arrested – one in connection with an alleged racial breach of the peace in the Ibrox area. The other two were arrested in connection with alleged breaches of the peace in the city centre and in the Central Station area, the spokeswoman said.Today’s demonstrations came days after Christopher Miller, 25, was jailed for life for the racist murder of Indian naval officer Kunal Mohanty in Glasgow, and the British National Party came fourth in the Glasgow North East by-election.Representatives from across the political spectrum, including Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie, were in attendance at the Scotland United rally.Ms Sturgeon, who is also a Glasgow MSP, condemned groups that perpetuate hatred and bigotry. She said: “The Scottish Government’s vision is of a Scotland that embraces diversity and fosters a sense of common purpose and goals.”As the far-right Scottish Defence League hold an anti-Islamic demonstration in Glasgow, it is important for the whole nation to send a clear message condemning all forms of bigotry and discrimination.”To show opposition to that demonstration, like thousands of others, I was proud to attend the Scotland United rally in Glasgow and stand shoulder to shoulder with Scotland’s Muslim communities.”Ms Goldie said racism is “fundamentally at odds” with our national values. She said: “There is a shadow which blights us all. It is that small minority in Scotland which engages in racism.”Their behaviour is utterly unacceptable. We must unite in condemning it and in condemning anyone or any agency who panders to such repugnant activity.”And as a politician, let me make clear – the politics of fear, of racism and of division have no place in Glasgow, no place in Scotland and no place in today’s Britain.”Osama Saeed, chief executive of the Scottish-Islamic Foundation, called for greater dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims, and said “serious thought” needed to be put into the “rise” of Islamophobia in Scotland.Mr Saeed, one of the main organisers of Scotland United, said: “The level of solidarity with Muslims and all minorities on display today was important and what we were looking for.”There’s no doubt there are debates to be had about Islam and Muslims, and that many people have questions.”Like all people, Muslims are not perfect. But the sincere way of approaching this is to talk to us, not at us. Talk with us, not about us.”The English Defence League started in June and has held several demonstrations, including events in London, Manchester and Leeds. The group describes accusations of racism or fascism as “flat-out untrue”.The SDL was formed in protest against Muslim “extremists” and “jihadists”. It says the UK Government is not taking significant action against the “Islamist assault” which it claims is threatening British culture.Strathclyde Police said the demonstrations passed off with only minor isolated incidents.Assistant Chief Constable Fiona Taylor said: “This has been a successful operation for Strathclyde Police and our partners.”Having two high-profile demonstrations taking place in the city at the same time was always going to be a challenge.”I am pleased to say that we met that challenge and that the day passed off with only minor incidents reported.”When planning for a day like today, we always have to strike a balance between protecting people’s right to peaceful protest and ensuring that the city continues to operate with the minimum of disruption to the people who live and work here. I believe we achieved just that.”
