England keeper Robert Green was sent off as Ukraine wrecked their 100% record in the World Cup qualifiers.

Green saw red after only 13 minutes for fouling Artem Milevskiy after he cashed in on Rio Ferdinand’s mistake.Andriy Shevchenko sent substitute David James the wrong way from the spot, but struck the post.Sergiy Nazarenko’s deflected shot after 29 minutes secured a crucial win for Ukraine, with Wayne Rooney coming close for England in the dying seconds.Green made an unwanted mark in history by becoming the first England keeper to be sent off – and coach Fabio Capello also experienced defeat in a competitive fixture for the first time. The game was played out in a hostile atmosphere in Dnipropetrovsk, with referee Damor Skomina at one point threatening to abandon the game if any more flares were thrown on to the pitch after a second hold up in play.England had already qualified for next summer’s showpiece in South Africa, but their hopes of taking a flawless qualifying record to the World Cup were seriously undermined by that early red card for Green.Milevskiy struck the woodwork for Ukraine and James distinguished himself with fine saves from Yaroslev Rakytskyy and Andriy Yarmolenko – but Capello will take great heart from the fight and spirit shown by England in the second half.Capello will not take as much pleasure from a ragged defensive display, in which Ferdinand looked vulnerable throughout.England’s ten men penned Ukraine in their own territory in the closing stages, and the outstanding Rooney had the home crowd holding its breath when his low shot flew inches off target in the last minute. The game was only two minutes old when the first barrage of flares came flying on, with many landing in the vicinity of England keeper Green.Green got the nod ahead of James as the battle continues to be England’s World Cup keeper continues – but he saw his evening cut short when he was dismissed after only 13 minutes.Ferdinand was the culprit with a desperate piece of defending that allowed Milevskiy a clear run on goal. Green hauled him down as he went around the keeper, and referee Skomina pointed to the spot before showing Green the red card.

Aaron Lennon was sacrificed for James, whose first task was to face Shevchenko’s penalty. He was sent the wrong way, but was grateful to see the spot-kick bounce to safety off the outside of the post.James was helpless as Ukraine took a deserved lead after 29 minutes, although it was once again the result of defensive carelessness from England.Ashley Cole conceded possession near the edge of the area, and when the ball broke loose to Nazarenko his 20-yard shot deflected off the head of the Chelsea defender past the motionless James.England almost delivered the instant response when Rooney’s clever pass released Frank Lampard, but he pulled his finish across the face of goal and wide.Milevskiy almost doubled Ukraine’s advantage after 32 minutes with a thunderous long-range drive that thundered off the post with James beaten.England coach Capello made a change at the interval as Steven Gerrard, who picked up a thigh injury, was replaced by James Milner.Ukraine picked up the pace after the break and were only denied a second when James showed tremendous agility to turn away Rakytskyy’s strike.England had tried to be positive, even with a numerical disadvantage, and Capello attempted to inject more potency into his attack when he replaced the tiring Emile Heskey with Carlton Cole after 71 minutes. And James was the hero again with 11 minutes left, making a crucial block from Yarmolenko as he raced clear when England’s defence was caught square.Rooney gave the Ukraine fans that late scare, but their side held on for a victory they ultimately deserved.

Finland 2-1 Wales

Niklas Moisander’s second half strike ended Wales’ hopes of finishing third in their World Cup qualifying group.

Roni Porokara put the home side ahead on five minutes, slotting home after goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey could only parry Jonathan Johansson’s shot.Wales captain Craig Bellamy levelled 12 minutes later from David Vaughan’s cross, his fifth goal in six games. But Moisander’s 77th-minute toe-poke was enough to claim victory and third spot for the Finns. With both teams out of contention for qualification for next year’s World Cup in South Africa, third place in Group Four was still the target with the Finns going into the game occupying that spot. The home side were already fired up for the clash following Wales captain Craig Bellamy’s comments after the sides last met in March, claiming they were both “poor”.And it took them just five minutes to break the deadlock.Jonathan Johansson turned Ashley Williams in the box and his goal-bound effort was saved well by Hennessey, but his parry fell into the path of Roni Porokara who slotted into an empty net from 12 yards. It was the worst possible start for a depleted Wales side who could only name four substitutes, but they responded well. And 12 minutes later they were level after Gareth Bale set Blackpool’s Vaughan free on the left to square for Bellamy to slide home his fifth goal in six games.

It helped Wales grow with confidence but they still had to defend, Petri Pasanen heading Joonas Kolkka’s corner just over.It was a much more positive display from John Toshack’s side though and then it was Bellamy’s turn to break into the box, only to be denied by Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Finland goal.Hitting the ageing Finns on the counter-attack is what is what Wales had to do and nine minutes before the break, Tottenham left-back Bale did just that crossing from the by-line for Simon Church, but the Reading striker could not direct his glancing header goal-bound.Finland were not prepared to settle for a draw though and came out on the offensive at the start of what turned out to be a poor second half with the excellent Jari Litmanen key to their attack.Bellamy picked up a booking for dissent after suffering a knock from a challenge by Hannu Tihinen, meaning he will miss Wednesday’s final qualifier in Liechetenstein. And it was only to get worse for Wales as they allowed Finland to apply the pressure. They came close to adding a second on 70 minutes when substitute Kasper Hamalainen got into the box thanks to a fortunate deflection and Wolves keeper Hennessey had to dive low to deny him at the near post.Hennessey, who also picked up a booking and is also out of Wednesday’s clash, could do nothing five minutes later when Finland did get their second goal.Porokara, on the edge of the “D”, found Moisander free on the left to charge into the box, evade a challenge from James Collins and toe-poke home into the far corner. There could have been late drama when Sami Hyypia’s mistake gifted the ball to Dave Edwards in the Finland box but Bolton keeper Jaaskelainen reacted quickly to deny him and Wales who will finish fourth in the group.

Mounted police, dogs and officers act as a barrier between the groups of protesters

At least 2,000 people are protesting in two political demonstrations in Manchester city centre.

About 700 members of the English Defence League (EDL) and 1,400 members of Unite Against Fascism (UAF) are separated by a line of riot police. The EDL members are protesting against Islamic extremists – prompting a counter-protest from the UAF.Police said 34 people had been arrested in Manchester on suspicion of public order offences. One arrest was also on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon. Both sets of demonstrators are facing each other in Piccadilly Gardens and are separated by a line of police officers, dogs and mounted police.

Mat Trewern, from BBC Radio Manchester, said the atmosphere had turned “quite nasty” compared to earlier on in the day.He said: “The police are trying to keep the two groups separate and it has been working so far. Some members of the UAF tried to break the police line between the two groups, which in turn angered the EDL members.”Trouble had started when 100 members of EDL arrived at Piccadilly Gardens and they were immediately met with shouts of ‘racists’ and ‘off our streets’ by members of the UAF, who had already congregated at Piccadilly.”The atmosphere is tense.”

‘Hell-bent on confrontation’

He said the number of protesters from the UAF outnumber those from the EDL by about two to one.Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said: “The presence of so many protesters in the city has proved a challenge and while many have turned out to protest peacefully, the police reaction has been necessary in order to prevent the few hell-bent on violent confrontation.

Today we’ve made arrests, many of whom were thought to be agitators and trouble-makers.”Greater Manchester Police confirmed one man, believed to be heading to the protest, had been arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of distributing racially aggravated material.Muslim leaders had renewed appeals for people to avoid the demonstrations.A recent EDL event in Birmingham led to counter-demonstrations and bricks being hurled at riot police. Up to 90 people were arrested.Nanu Miah, a community leader from Oldham, said: “We are not encouraging people to go, we don’t know who EDL is and what could happen.”
