The stabbing took place in Priory Road, next to the station. There, a large group of Millwall fans broke a police cordon, throwing bottles and bricks. It is understood that the fans had approached via a side road in a deliberate ambush of West Ham supporters.Around 500 riot police were dispatched to the scene and two arrests were made, one for disorder and the second for a breach of a banning order. The victim of the stabbing was being treated by paramedics. The Metropolitan Police had restricted the number of Millwall fans to 2,300 but far more gathered outside Upton Park.Disorder subsequently broke out inside the ground, too, when in the 77th minute a large object appeared to be thrown by a West Ham section of the crowd towards the Millwall contingent in the Trevor Brooking stand.

Stewards failed to contain West Ham fans as they tried to surge across the seats separating the two bands of supporters and one fan even made it on to the pitch.West Ham’s equaliser in the 87th minute exacerbated the trouble, with around 100 home fans in the Bobby Moore stand defying the stewards to invade the playing surface.Against this febrile backdrop the match became incidental, but each goal clearly served to aggravate the tense mood. On this evening of hostility Neil Harris, Millwall’s record goalscorer, had given his side the lead in the 26th minute.Scott Barron propelled a long throw into the area, which Danny Gabbidon – making his first appearance for 18 months after a groin injury – only half dealt with, allowing Harris to slot away the finish when the ball fell into his path.Millwall could have had even more to taunt West Ham with when Alan Dunne foraged forward on the right and exchanged passes with Gary Alexander, but Robert Green was down sharply to thwart the full-back when he was through on goal.A penalty claim increased the vitriol from West Ham quarters; Julien Faubert’s claim was not given after David Martin hauled him down on the edge of the area, with play allowed to continue. The payback for West Ham had to wait until the 87th minute, with a right-foot volley from Junior Stanislas that caused the tension to spill over once more.West Ham took the lead in extra time when Jack Collison’s cross hit a defender’s hand and Stanislas scored in the penalty, prompti9ng another pitch invasion which led to the players beibng take off and play being suspended.Amid the mayhem, substitute Zavon Hines finished a great run by firing inside the far post to make it 3-1 to West Ham.

The scuffles took place outside West Ham’s Upton Park ground in east London, where the teams have been playing a Carling Cup game.Several people were arrested after violence flared near the stadium.Police said the disorder was caused by people without tickets who had planned to start trouble.A spokesman for Metropolitan Police said more officers were being rushed to the scene.”There is large-scale trouble involving hundreds of fans which we are dealing with at the moment,” he added.

A number of arrests were made for disorder and breaches of banning orders outside the Carling Cup game.A man was stabbed in the chest in Priory Road, close to the stadium.Police said the attack was linked to the disorder. He was being treated by paramedics.

Sky’s home affairs correspondent Mark White said police have described the violence as “serious” and “organised”.He added: “They were always aware that any game between West Ham and Millwall is what they describe as a high-risk game.“There is a history of trouble between these rival sets of supporters so there would be more officers at this match than other lower risk games that are taking place.”We are told that because of the organised nature of this, the violence was serious.”And some fans outside the ground have described it as some of the most serious trouble they have seen betwen these two sets of supporters for some time.”
