Photos of thugs in station stand-off released

THESE are the suspected key players in a planned dust-up between rival hooligans.Trouble flared at Newcastle’s Central Station as Sunderland supporters travelled home from a pre-season friendly in Edinburgh.Police had received intelligence that members of the Seaburn Casuals firm had plotted to do battle with enemies the Newcastle Gremlins.

Officers managed to keep the two gangs apart but it did not stop violence erupting on the station platform in scenes that saw four police dogs attacked and three men taken to hospital with head injuries.Video footage was collected of those who came off the football special train from Scotland, as well as a gang of troublemakers who had assembled in a nearby underpass in preparation for a brawl.

The disorder kicked-off on August 8 after Sunderland’s game with Hearts.Among those travelling back from the Scottish capital were 40 on board a football special train, which contained so-called “risk supporters,” linked to the Black Cats hooligan element. When they pulled into Central Station, there was a heavy police presence and members of the group went on to clash with the assembled officers.Police drew batons to restrain the rowdy crowd and footage posted online showed a pool of blood on the platform after one man sustained head injuries.

It emerged four dogs were injured after being attacked by members of the group and police later revealed they had mounted an operation to thwart a planned scrap between Sunderland and Newcastle thugs.CCTV from a nearby subway showed alleged members of the Gremlins firm gearing up to do battle with weapons including a baton. Smoke thought to have come from a grenade later clouds the footage. The Central Station scenes sparked controversy, with police accused of being heavy-handed.A probe was launched by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) but swiftly concluded no further action would be taken. The Football Supporters Federation reacted angrily, saying it had differing intelligence and there were calls for IPCC Commissioner for the North East Gary Garland to resign. After releasing moving footage of the trouble, Northumbria Police has now issued these stills in a bid to bring key players to justice.
