Leeds United v Millwall: Match report
Flying to Wembley: Millwall reached their first ever play-off final after Nadjim Adbou equalised to put the Londoners ahead on aggregate Photo: PA

Leeds Uunited remain in the third tier of English football, heartbreakingly so for their fans, who turned out in huge, impassioned numbers in the rain to witness more frustration here. Leeds fans’ sang their defiance at the final whistle but their players were slumped on the pitch, broken men.Jermaine Beckford missed a penalty, summing up his disappointing performance, Luciano Becchio and Jimmy Abdou swapped goals, but all Leeds late pressure came to nothing. Millwall defended like lions, Zak Whitbread even recovering from a head injury to resume his station at the heart of the visitors’ defence.Along with the outstanding keeper, David Forde, Whitbread was magnificent at the back, keeping Beckford quiet, and Kenny Jackett’s well-organised side now meet either MK Dons or Scunthorpe United at Wembley. Such were the tensions at the end that Leeds manager, Simon Grayson, even ran past Jackett and went into the Millwall dug-out to remonstrate with Jackett’s subs for holding on to the ball. From start to finish, this had been a passion-play.Millwall had the first-leg goal from Neil Harris, Leeds had the wall of sound and so began a well-balanced confrontation of rising tension in front of the Football League’s largest crowd of the season, 37,036. When Luciano Becchio scored early in the second half, it felt like double that number. When Nadjim Abdou then struck, silence reigned before Leeds got behind the team again, setting up a frantic finale. So high were the stakes, so driven were both sides by the thought of Wembley that the tackles inevitably went steaming in for the start, testing opponents’ shin-pads and mettle. Adam Bolder caught Robert Snodgrass hard and late, bringing the Millwall midfielder a booking.Jonny Howson returned the compliment, clattering Abdou, surprisingly escaping any sanction. To Millwall’s consternation, Mark Halsey then punished David Martin for running into Jonathan Douglas, bringing the Londoners’ their 100th booking of the season. Halsey soon slightly appeased the 1000 visiting fans by taking the name of Fabian Delph following a melee.A football match broke out. Leeds had to score, and their urgency was clear, a sweeping, cross-field move midway through the first half almost bringing reward. Delph and Howson set up the excellent Snodgrass, who was denied by Forde. Millwall’s exceptional keeper then impressed in saving from Beckford and Delph.Leeds kept pushing, searching for any lifeline. Such was Becchio’s determination to reach the ball that he went flying into the front row of the crowd. Bradley Johnson then let fly from 30 yards, the ball skidding just wide of Forde’s left-hand upright.Back came Leeds again, Snodgrass shooting over. When the fourth official indicated six minutes of injury time, largely for Whitbread’s head injury, hope swirled around Elland Road. That hope then died for another year. If Grayson can keep this team together, they will push for promotion next year”

Jimmy Abdou takes Millwall to Wembley at Leeds’ expense.

Leeds had hoped to be visiting St James’ Park next season and they will be, but at Exeter rather than Newcastle. Despite facing a wall of sound at Elland Road, the wall of blue shirts held firm after Nadjim “Jimmy” Abdou’s late goal negated Luciano Becchio’s opener and took Millwall into the League One play-off final against MK Dons or Scunthorpe a week on Sunday.A night that started with “Marching On Together” booming out ended against a backdrop of “No One Likes Us, We Don’t Care” after Abdou, a tireless French midfielder who has never been to Wembley, took Millwall through the play-off semi-finals at the fifth attempt. They did it the hard way, David Forde saving Jermaine Beckford’s penalty before Leeds’ pressure reaped its reward. Then, having equalised, they had to negotiate eight minutes of added time .Kenny Jackett, the Millwall manager, spoke of his pride in emerging successful from “one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever been involved in”. After saluting the 1,000-strong band of supporters from south London, once 36,000 Yorkshiremen drifted away pondering a third season in the third tier, he added: “To overcome a very good Leeds team over two legs is a big achievement.”His Leeds counterpart, Simon Grayson, who took over an ailing side on Boxing Day and presided over 11 successive home wins until last night, reflected on “a bitter pill to swallow”. The former Blackpool manager was “very proud” of his young team and pledged to go all out to win automatic promotion next season.Roared on by the season’s biggest crowd outside the Premier League, Leeds dominated possession as they strove to cancel out Neil Harris’s winner at The Den. Yet Millwall’s effectiveness slowed their momentum and 24 minutes elapsed before Beckford forced a sprawling save from Forde. And three minutes into the second half Forde again proved the 34-goal striker’s nemesis. Mark Halsey spotted Andy Frampton tugging Sam Sodje’s shirt, but the goalkeeper, having picked up a coin thrown from the crowd, dived to parry Beckford’s weak kick.Leeds were not to be denied. In the 53rd minute, Ben Parker advanced from his own penalty box into Millwall territory before feeding Andy Robinson. Taking a return pass, Parker’s cross was converted by Becchio for his 19th goal of the season. With 17 minutes remaining, and Leeds piling forward with mounting desperation, Millwall countered to devastating effect. David Martin’s deep cross was turned back into the six-yard area by Lewis Grabban for Abdou to score from close range and slash the decibel level at a stroke”

Fans killed as car hit sign on M1

Three football fans died when their car span out of control and crashed into a sign on the M1 as they drove home from an England match, an inquest has heard.Tony Worby, 25, was driving his brother Jonathan, 21, and friend Gareth Rhodes, 23, to their homes in Bradford, West Yorkshire, on 11 October last year. They were returning from Wembley after an England World Cup qualifier. The inquest heard the car was travelling at 85-95mph near Sheffield when it crashed.

No seatbelts

“Mr Worby lost control of the Ford Mondeo as he overtook another car near junction 32, the M18 turn-off, and slid across three carriageways before flipping into the air over a crash barrier and hitting a road sign.Recording a narrative verdict at Rotherham Coroner’s Court, Deputy Coroner Raymond Curtis said: “I can only say that it’s a dreadfully sad business for everyone concerned to come to an inquest where three young men in the prime of life have lost their lives.”Especially on a day when they had no doubt enjoyed the football match before endeavouring to return home.”Father-of-four Tony and brother Jonathan, both of Rowlestone Rise, in Bradford, died at the scene of the collision.Mr Curtis said both died from head and neck injuries consistent with a road traffic accident.Mr Rhodes, a father-of-two of Lavell Mews, Bradford, was taken to Rotherham District General Hospital, where he died a short time later from multiple injuries. The inquest heard none of the three men had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, but Mr Curtis said: “Had they been wearing seatbelts, I’m entirely satisfied it is unlikely the outcome would have been any different.”
