Steven Gerrard: Liverpool captain to have shoulder surgery

Liverpool captain and England international Steven Gerrard will have surgery on a shoulder injury this week.

The midfielder, 32, has started all 36 of the Reds’ Premier League games this season.

However, Gerrard’s injury has worsened in recent weeks and Liverpool have decided to bring forward the operation.

He will miss the final two Premier League games of the season, against Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, but is expected to be fit for pre-season.

The operation means Gerrard will miss England’s friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil on 29 May and 2 June respectively.

Gerrard played in Liverpool’s goalless draw with rivals Everton on Sunday – a result that leaves the Reds seventh with 55 points and unable to finish higher than sixth.

Kilmarnock’s match with Hibernian abandoned after fan suffers ‘suspected heart attack’ and later dies in hospital

By Adam Shergold

A man in his 50s who collapsed at a Scottish Premier League match has died in hospital.

Kilmarnock manager Kenny Shiels insisted his side’s Clydesdale Bank Premier League game against Hibernian at Rugby Park had to be abandoned out of respect.

Referee Kevin Clancy stopped the game, which was tied at 1-1, in the 51st minute amid distressing scenes in front of the East Stand as a home fan was administered CPR, with the players then going down the tunnel a few minutes later.

Killie doctor Gerry Canning and Hibs counterpart Duncan Reid helped attend to the man, who was described by Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston as a ‘long-standing season-ticket holder.’

An ambulance drove pitchside 10 minutes later with the supporter then being taken away to Crosshouse hospital and the match called off, 26 minutes after it had been stopped.

Police confirmed on Sky Sports that a ’50-60 year old male’ had been taken ill and said the cause was a ‘possible heart attack’. They added that the game was abandoned ‘out of respect’ to the spectator and his family and friends.

It was confirmed later on Sunday night that the fan had died.

In March 2012, Killie’s League Cup winning celebrations following their victory over Celtic at Hampden were cut short following the death of midfielder Liam Kelly’s father from a heart attack.

After paramedics worked to revive him at the final whistle, Jack Kelly was rushed to the Victoria Infirmary and died within hours.

A month later an Inverness fan collapsed and died in the Frank Beattie Stand midway through the second half of a game against Killie.

With those two incidents in mind, Shiels and Hibs manager Pat Fenlon both wanted the game abandoned.

‘We need to show respect to the relevant families,’ Shiels said.

‘As you know we have been through that three times in just over a year. An Inverness fan lost his life and then Liam Kelly’s father.

‘Football is not as important as human life so we have shown our respect, we don’t know what the outcome is but hopefully everything turns out okay.

‘It seems to be pretty serious, a heart attack we were told.

‘I heard the supporters shouting to kick the ball out and then we seen our medical team going across.

‘The fourth official came and told me we need to stop the game.

‘We waited a while to see if they could bring him round and continue the game but obviously it was quite serious so Pat Fenlon and I both agreed that the game should be abandoned.

‘We were asked for our views on it, the officials and the match delegate (Frank Coulston) were very good.

‘There is no decision (about replayed game), we are thinking Wednesday week, the 15th of May, that is not a definite but the most likely date.’

Coulston admitted abandoning the game was a ‘simple decision’ to make.

‘It was very unusual,’ he said. ‘There is no briefing on those situations, it was something out of the blue for me.

‘But the decision was the right one out of respect and the game had been stopped a while at that point.

‘I was called in with the referee and chief inspector and the managers and it was a simple decision.’

Johnston added: ‘Obviously there was a serious health incident involving one of our supporters, a long-standing season-ticket holder.

‘We had all the relevant medical teams on hand to issue emergency first aid.

‘It is a suspected heart attack and the victim has been removed to hospital and we don’t have any further news than that.

‘Obviously our thoughts are with him and his family and we hope he will make a recovery.

‘It is a sad occasion for everybody.’

Scotland’s top-flight clubs consider play-offs and SPL2

Top-flight clubs will meet at Hampden Park on Tuesday for what is being billed as a final chance to reorganise Scottish football for next season.

And Dundee manager John Brown believes agreement is possible.

The relegated club have joined First Division clubs who want to break away from the Scottish Football League to form a second tier of the top flight.

“I think tomorrow could be the point where we get a decision,” Brown told BBC Scotland.

What I’m hearing, there will be decisions made tomorrow and hopefully it’s for the best of Scottish football

John Brown Dundee manager

Dundee, who were relegated on Sunday, have a foot in both camps as they will be able to speak for their future second-tier colleagues.

“What I’m hearing, there will be decisions made tomorrow and hopefully it’s for the best of Scottish football,” said Brown.

“We need to do it soon. We’re becoming a mockery here. We need to come up with the answers.”

The 12 Scottish Premier League clubs met last week to discuss a number of options for introducing play-offs between the top two divisions.

Since then, 10 clubs have sent a proposal to the SPL asking to join its ranks in a breakaway from the SFL.

It is understood there are three options other than the status quo that will be discussed by the 12 clubs.

One is the introduction of play-offs between the SPL and SFL.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir

Longmuir is in favour of play-offs but facing a breakaway by Division One clubs

The second is the introduction of play-offs in a new structure with a model that will redistribute finances from the top-flight to SFL clubs.

A third option is the possibility of an SPL2.

St Mirren and Ross County last month vetoed plans for a new merged structure with leagues of 12, 12 and 18.

They had been unconvinced of the merits of the proposed split of the top two divisions into three after 22 games.

Both clubs are understood to be more favourable towards play-offs, but no consensus was reached when the SPL clubs met to consider change last week.

Some clubs fear opening themselves up to a greater chance of relegation without the extra revenue the SPL claimed would be created by a mid-season split into three leagues of eight.

SFL chief executive David Longmuir has expressed his support for the introduction of play-offs for promotion and relegation between the top two tiers.

There are only five weeks left until the fixtures are due out, with the SPL season scheduled to start on 3 August.

However, it is understood that league officials are comfortable that any agreement could be put into action at any stage before the publication.
