Paisley parties as St Mirren League Cup heroes enjoy open top bus parade through town

THE stars who had landed the cup for the first time in the club’s history were honoured as the townsfolk turned out to cheer them.

AT the back of the open-top bus it was bedlam as the St Mirren players celebrated wildly with the precious piece of silverware they’d worked so hard to win just a couple of hours earlier.

Chairman Stewart Gilmour even got involved, black-and-white scarf round his neck as he danced with the stars who had just earned legendary status in winning the League Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Down below the scene was similar with thousands of ecstatic fans turning out to line the jubilant streets as the red Glasgow Tour bus carrying their heroes snaked through Paisley city centre.

Yet in the front row there was only quiet reflection from the man who made it all possible. Buddies boss Danny Lennon sat side by side with Tommy Craig offering the odd wave in appreciation at the supporters who had turned out.

It was like a different world but as Record Sport joined the Saints heroes for the short journey, Lennon said: “I’ll let them enjoy it, I’m just soaking it up.

“I just want to enjoy the full occasion. You can see what it means to everyone in Paisley. We’re absolutely delighted to be able to bring a piece of silverware to our club for the first time in 26 years.”

Lennon, though, had every right to celebrate in the manner the rest of the players and staff were.

His physio Gerry Docherty was on the bus and he knew only too well the pain his manager suffered in missing out on such an occasion.

Docherty drove Lennon to the hospital after he suffered a training-ground injury in 1994 in the build-up to the Final of the same competition as a player with Raith that ruled him out of the victory over Celtic.

That day there were tears. Last night there were only smiles.

THERE was no redemption for Rangers in Elgin.

Desperate to atone for last week’s shameful home loss to Annan Athletic, it took a Lee McCulloch penalty to scrape the win that takes them 20 points clear at the top.

But the enduring images will be Neil Alexander’s injury-time booking for time-wasting and manager Ally McCoist pleading with referee David Somers to blow the full-time whistle.

On top of that, Ian Black saw red for two more moments of stupidity, though he will again claim he is being victimised.

Rangers at least started on the front foot.

Lee Wallace’s cross from deep found Fran Sandaza and his header brought out the best in Joe Malin, who tipped wide at full stretch.

Emilson Cribari missed an even better chance. Fraser Aird’s corner presented him with a free header and he should have done much better than nod tamely wide.

City strung a few passes together and man-mountain Paul Millar naturally won his aerial battles, but it was the visitors who continued to create the best chances.

Rangers rookie Robbie Crawford was desperately unlucky to see a thundering 25-yard strike clip the outside of the post, while Northern Ireland’s Andy Little blew the best opportunity for the opener with a wayward side-footed effort after Sandaza’s cut-back put it on a plate for Gers’ top scorer.

Little has been rivalled in the goal-grabbing stakes by McCulloch this term, but McCoist slotted his skipper into the defence.

Even with the ball at the other end of the pitch for much of the game, it was a move that paid dividends with veteran McCulloch using all of his experience to bark out orders and generally grab the previously dozy defence by the scruff of the neck.

There were horrified gasps from the Rangers contingent as they came within an inch of falling behind on 36 minutes when the lively Daniel Moore curled a free-kick just high and wide of the top left-hand corner.

Black had his weekly whine at the officials when he was accidentally caught by Nicolson’s arm.

True to form, Black naturally assumed he had been targeted yet again by another Third Division hatchet man and went down as if he had been shot.

Amazingly — without even the aid of a magic sponge — he was able to continue.

His mood did not improve after the interval when he was pulled up by referee Somers for a late lunge on Stuart Leslie.

He copped a booking for leaving his studs in and had to be hauled away from Somers by McCulloch.

By this point anxiety really had started to set in, with the common complaint from the Rangers bench that the players were too deep and too narrow in midfield.

Sandaza was left isolated and the ball bounced back off him on the few occasions it did find him.

When the going gets tough in these situations the suspicion is that a few of the Light Blues hide or revert to the risk-free pass.

Left-back Wallace at least takes responsibility and a surging run forward ended with a cut-back to Black, but his limp shot barely troubled Malin.

Little — who looks increasingly frustrated on the wing — did swing in one inviting cross that Sandaza completely missed at the back post, misjudging his diving header.

He was promptly hauled off, replaced by speedy winger Barrie McKay, with Little finally moving into a more central position.

With 18 minutes to go the breakthrough came, with Wallace again adopting the role of one-man team.

He took the ball for a run deep into the Elgin half and wouldn’t take no for an answer, wriggling his way free of the defence before being edged out by Sean Crighton and Jamie Duff.

To their astonishment ref Somers pointed straight to the spot and on first glance it looked soft.

To Somers’ credit, though, TV pictures proved he got the big call bang on and, in a week that saw the SFA’s refereeing fraternity hammered for the Edinburgh derby ghost goal, it’s important to point out when they get it right.

Crighton was booked for protesting before McCulloch took charge of the penalty, calmly sending Malin the wrong way before springing off to celebrate with the traveling support as much out of relief as any sense of merit.

The award let out-of-sorts Rangers off the hook.

McCoist will point to three more points taking them one step closer to clinching their initial target of promotion but he and his fans are entitled to ask for more than scraped 1-0 wins at Elgin — especially from under-achievers like Black.

The self-styled hardman was shown a second yellow card with four minutes to go for a needless, late clip on sub Gavin Morrison and responded with his trademark, ‘Why always me?’ look of contempt for the officials.

McCoist pleaded his innocence to fourth official Matt Northcroft but Black will not cut that sort of thing out of his game until people stop making excuses for him.

Keeper Alexander was booked for killing time while the Rangers bench cried for the whistle.

This is not how the lower-league adventure was supposed to be.

Celtic fans’ fury as Green Brigade accuse Strathclyde Police of ‘heavy-handed’ tactics

16 Mar 2013 19:05

POLICE arrested 13 supporters and said the the crowd appeared to be attempting to stage an illegal street procession on the way to today’s match against Aberdeen.

CELTIC fans have accused police of going over the top after they arrested 13 supporters on the way to Parkhead.

The Green Brigade group of fans claim that Strathclye Police officers formed a cordon – known as “kettling” – for no good reason.

Dramatic pictures show some officers wielding their metal batons at some fans with covered faces.

The force accused some of being “confrontational and aggressive” and stood by their tactics.

The fans held back by police said they would complain about the “heavy handed” tactics.

The group of fans had been surrounded by more than 200 officers including some mounted on horses.

The incident happened near the Chrystal Bell pub at Gallowgate around 1pm ahead of the 4-3 home win against Aberdeen.

Celtic 4 Aberdeen 3: Celtic fight back to pinch all three points with dramatic late winner

Prior to the match, the Green Brigade, who have been hailed by club bosses for bringing passion to Parkhead but criticised for going over the score with banners and chants, posted on its website plans for a protest and march.

They said that it was “to raise awareness and show support for the growing list of Celtic supporters receiving and facing bans” from the Scottish Premier League football club and the procurator fiscal.

The fans group also predicted there may be trouble, adding: “Please be mindful of the police presence and their actions. Please do not play into their hands.

“Avoid all communication as far as possible, have witnesses around you and a camera at hand to film/photograph them.”

Law firm Gildeas Solicitors – who act for the Green Brigade – urged anyone with photos or videos to contact them.

One Twitter user said: “A chopper, police vans and dogs out for a peaceful march? Everyone is trying to walk along the road and the police are physically blocking us.

“It was a peaceful march but police have stopped it.

Strathclyde Police said: “At around 1pm yesterday, police were called to reports of a large number of people gathering outside the Chrystal Bell pub at Gallowgate, Glasgow.

“The crowd, many of whom were wearing similar hooded tops and using scarfs to hide their identities, appeared to be attempting to stage an illegal street procession and officers were deployed to prevent this.

“The crowd were instructed that any procession on the road was illegal but that officers would facilitate a safe and orderly procession on the pavements toward their intended destination at Celtic Park.

“However, this was ignored and more officers were deployed as the crowd became increasingly confrontational and aggressive. The situation was contained a short time later.

“A number of arrests have been made for alleged public order offences. CCTV and helicopter footage was captured and will be studied as part of the investigation.”

Sectarian violence erupts at Windsor Park during Linfield clash with Shamrock Rovers

Football fans from the Republic ripped up seats and threw them onto the pitch as sectarian violence gripped Windsor Park last night.

Riot police moved into the away section housing Shamrock Rovers supporters at the Setanta Sports Cup quarter final against Linfield.

Bottles and other missiles were thrown by both sets of fans, and a number of flares were also flung onto the playing surface during the disorder which broke out midway through the first half.

Some Rovers fans broke through a barricade in the top deck of the North Stand and made their way towards Linfield fans. Police quickly contained the situation. Witnesses said sectarian chanting and goading could be heard from both sets of fans throughout the game.

After the match, a cordon of police vehicles blocked off Tates Avenue to keep fans apart.

They came under attack from youths throwing stones and bottles, although police said calm was restored quickly.

A loyalist flag protest was also said to be taking place in the area at the time.

It was not known last night if any arrests had been made.

“All I will say is that it was a sad night for football and if anything football was the loser,” said Linfield manager David Jeffrey.

The trouble follows the arrests of two fans after disorder at the first leg between the two teams in Dublin last week.

Sectarian chanting reverberated around the Tallaght Stadium during the game and a Union flag was erected on a post inside the grounds.

Witnesses said a pocket of the Belfast club’s fans clashed with gardai and security as they waited to go home.

There have been numerous clashes between fans of teams taking part in the all-Ireland Setanta Sports Cup since its inception in 2005.
