Luis Suarez should not confess handball – Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers said it was not up to Luis Suarez to admit to handling the ball when he scored Liverpool’s second in the 2-1 FA Cup win over Mansfield.

Stags players protested to the officials after the ball struck the substitute’s hand and went in.

When asked whether Suarez should have owned up, the Liverpool manager told ESPN: “It’s not Luis’s job to do that.

Fifa Laws of the Game 2012-13

Law 12: Fouls and Misconduct:

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration:

• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)

• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)

• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement

“It’s not been deliberate as it’s pushed up and hit his hand. It’s up to the officials to decide that.”

The former Swansea boss added: “There’s no doubt it was handball, but the referee and the officials ruled it wasn’t deliberate.

“I spoke to the fourth official when it was given because I couldn’t see and he said it was [handball] so I can only assume they thought it wasn’t deliberate.

“So obviously it was unfortunate for Mansfield and lucky for us that we got the goal.”

Rodgers was pleased with the performance of new signing Daniel Sturridge, who scored seven minutes into his debut to give the Premier League side the lead.

The 23-year-old, who signed from Chelsea this week, was replaced by fellow forward Suarez early in the second half.

“Danny Sturridge is a goalscorer but he is nowhere near fully fit,” said the Anfield manager.

“He will get opportunities, and he is quick and powerful.

“Luis Suarez and Danny Sturridge can play together, there is no problem with that. You want to fit in good players and build a competitive group. We want to bring in players that are multi-functional.”

“If you go to the Uruguayan looking for the romance of the cup you have come to the wrong place. He does not do romance when it comes to football and this was no different”

Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield went close to scoring through Matt Green, Chris Clements, Anthony Howell and Louis Briscoe before Green finally found the back of the net with 11 minutes of normal time remaining.

They pressed for an equaliser but could not make another breakthrough as Liverpool booked a fourth-round tie at Oldham.

“I’m proud of my boys, I thought they were a different level [during the] second half. I thought we stood off them and let them play in the first half,” Stags boss Paul Cox told ESPN.

“We’ve done well against one of the best teams. We’ve a lot of positives to take out of it.”

Cox also refused to criticise Suarez for the handball.

“I’d like to give the benefit of the doubt and say it was a reaction. He’s a goalscorer and I think goalscorers put the ball in the net anyway,” he added.

When asked whether he felt cheated, Cox said: “No I don’t. For me to come out and say something like that I think would be quite cheap.

“If it had gone in the other end and one of our players had done it I think we’d have accepted it.”

Hillsborough victims remembered in poignant seats gesture from Liverpool FC’s FA Cup opponents Mansfield

LIVERPOOL FC’s FA Cup opponents Mansfield Town paid poignant tribute to the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

The name of every victim who perished in the 1989 tragedy was placed on seats in the main stand at the non-league club’s One Call Stadium yesterday, where Liverpool clinched a 2-1 victory.

The idea was the brainchild of Mansfield’s operations director and lifelong Liverpool fan Paul Broughton, 47.

He made the suggestion to mark the memory of those who died watching the FA Cup semi-final clash in Sheffield to former Anfield striker David Fairclough.

Within minutes Fairclough had called Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Families Support Group, to check that the well-meant idea would be approved by relatives of the 96.

Mr Broughton said: “We wanted to do something in light of what has happened this year in terms of Hillsborough and as it’s been so long since the two sides met. One of our fans suggested we place a name on each of the empty seats in the segregation section of the stadium. The idea sent shivers down my spine. It was an amazing idea.”

The show of solidarity won the warm backing of Hillsborough victims’ families.

Margaret, whose 18-year-old son James was among the 96 who died, said: “I felt moved when I heard that Mansfield had planned this tribute.

“To me, it sums up where we are at, in terms of how everyone around the country is starting to realise what we’ve known for a long time about Hillsborough.

“It means a great deal and I would like to thank Mansfield on behalf of the HFSG.”

David Fairclough added: “It is very fitting and they will never be forgotten.”

5pm update

POLICE are investigating after a bus driver taking supporters home from Sunderland’s defeat to Liverpool FC claimed his vehicle came under attack from a stone-throwing gang.

Fans travelling back to the North East after the 3-0 Anfield loss at Anfield on Wednesday claimed one bus had its window smashed after an object was thrown as it moved through post-match traffic close to the stadium.

A second bus following close behind was also said to have been damaged.

Pictures claiming to show the damage were posted on social networking sites, and police yesterday said they had received a report from one of the bus drivers.

Mal Robinson, editor in chief of Sunderland fanzine Seventy3, was travelling on a bus shared by the fanzine and the club’s South Shields supporters’ group.

He said: “The bus was pulling away from the Arkles pub when it slowed down close to a takeaway.

“We noticed some lads stood on the pavement and all of a sudden stones were being thrown.

“One smashed the outer layer of the window on the side of our bus.

“A bus from Jarrow was a few yards behind us and that was also hit, although no windows were damaged.

“It was quite a shock because it had not been that sort of game at all. The atmosphere had been quiet and there was no sign of any problems. There was nothing to suggest the lads we saw had been to the match and they were not wearing club colours.

“I have been to Anfield and Goodison many times before and never experienced anything like this.”
