England can win the 2014 World Cup, says Roy Hodgson

Roy Hodgson says it is not impossible for England to win the 2014 World Cup and vowed to “keep that dream alive”.

Experts including record goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton have written off England’s chances in Brazil.

But boss Hodgson told Sportsweek on 5 live: “We’re far from being favourites but you’ve got to shy away from ‘impossible’ in football.

“There are plenty of events in football that you could have said were impossible but people have done it.”

England’s 2013 fixtures

  • February 2: Brazil (h) -friendly
  • March 23: San Marino (a) – WC qualifying
  • March 26: Montenegro (a) -WC qualifying
  • May 29: Rep of Ireland (h) – friendly
  • Aug 8: Scotland (h) – friendly
  • Sept 6: Moldova (h) – WC qualifying
  • Sept 9: Ukraine (a) – WC qualifying
  • Oct 11: Montenegro (a ) – WC qualifying
  • Oct 15 Poland (h) – WC qualifying

England won their only tournament on home turf at the 1966 World Cup, but have not progressed beyond the quarter-finals of a major event since Euro ’96.

Hodgson pointed to Chelsea’s surprise triumph in last season’s Champions League under caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo as an inspiration for England.

“It wasn’t likely that Chelsea would become champions of Europe, especially having to change their manager mid-stream but they did it,” he added.

“That was by beating Barcelona and Bayern Munich – two of the best teams in Europe, so I’d like to keep that dream alive.”

Hodgson succeeded Fabio Capello as England manager in May 2012, guiding them through the group stage of the European Championship.

But they were outplayed by Italy in the quarter-finals before losing on penalties.

His team are currently second in World Cup qualifying Group H after four games, two points behind Montenegro.

Speaking before the start of the campaign in September, Charlton said he felt sorry for the England manager because the influx of foreign players in the Premier League means there is a shortage of English players to choose from.

Play media

It is an argument which Hodgson rejects.

“We have a lot of quality players – you could reel 30-40 players off the top of your head quite easily and add some of these young players who seem to have a very bright future in front of them,” said Hodgson.

“I think the main problems are whether the main figures are available at the right time when you need them. Do we have enough competition in the really important positions in the teams?

“I hope I never get tricked into saying that we don’t have enough players or there’s not enough players good enough to play for England because that would be a very sad indictment.

“I know there are a lot of foreigners in the league but there are plenty of English ones. There were seven English players playing for Manchester United the other day and they’re top of the Premier League.”

Should the Premier League have a winter break?

Another Christmas draws closer and, as always at this time of year, Premier League clubs are braced for a frenzied and potentially season-defining period of five games in 15 days.

In any Premier League dressing room, the winter break is always a talking point

Paul Scharner Former Wigan and West Brom player

A campaign can crumble; the FA Cup’s third round must be tackled.

Elsewhere in Europe, footballers in other top leagues – such as Spain, Italy, Germany, France – are putting their feet up for a winter break.

One of them is Paul Scharner, who spent six seasons with Wigan and West Brom. He now plays for Hamburg (whose last match was on 15 December 2012, and whose next match is on 20 January, 2013).

Leading figures in England like Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson  and Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini  want a winter break.

But with no prominent views being aired by current Premier League players, and the position of the Premier League, the Football League and the FA still rather unclear,  Scharner tells BBC Sport how his former colleagues and rivals might be feeling at the moment.

The wisdom of a winter break

“Christmas in England is the toughest time.

“It’s very hard to recover for the rest of the season. After a long season without a break, it’s also a big question of your mental strength. That’s the difference for players in Germany – they have 10 or 14 days off to recharge the batteries.

“In any Premier League dressing room the winter break is always a talking point, because they see the Italian and Spanish leagues – and all the others – who can rest.

“I think 80-85% of current Premier League players support a winter break. It’s just for money reasons [that it doesn’t have one].

“It would be a very good idea for England because the league would be more competitive. Without a break, it’s just an advantage for the big teams with big squads. For the smaller teams with lesser players, they start to struggle in the second half of the season. You can see after Christmas that the league splits a little bit.

“Elsewhere, everybody has a break and can recover and start afresh for the second half of the season. Mentally, this is a big recovery point.

“Also, if you are very Catholic or very religious, then you want to enjoy Christmas time with your family – that is also a big point for a lot of players in Europe.

“Five games in a couple of weeks [as in England] is immense, especially for your body’s energy levels. The quality of football drops in this period because everybody is struggling to keep proper fitness.

“[But in a way] it’s not about fitness, though, because the body is totally empty. It’s about ‘how much willpower do you have to perform twice within a 48-hour period?’ This, however, is definitely not enough time to recover – specialists generally think that high-performance sportsmen need at least 72 hours to recover.

European winter breaks

  • La Liga (Spain): Last game before break – 22 December; first game back – 5 January
  • Serie A (Italy): Last game before break – 22 December; first game back – 6 January
  • Bundesliga (Germany): Last game before break – 22 December; back – 19 January
  • Ligue 1 (France): Last game before break – 23 December; first game back – 12 January
  • Portuguesa Liga: Last game before break – 16 December; first game back – 6 January
  • SPL (Scotland): Last game before break – 3 January; first game back – 19 January

*The above applies to league fixtures (some Portuguese sides play in Taca da Liga cup over New Year period; some German clubs play in DFB Pokal cup competition during the break)

“You also have to consider the surfaces, which are difficult to play on. And for the fans, it must be tough to sit in the stands in sub-zero temperatures. You could use two weeks in summer and start the season earlier, and enjoy football in the sunshine.

“A winter break would help English club sides to be more competitive in European competition, and it would really help the English national team.

“This winter break is good for me [and others who’ve been injured]. I damaged my ligaments early in the season and was out for six weeks. From January I can start again and try to get my place in the team.

“That would be more difficult in England because the season would be ongoing – it’s better just to start with [what is essentially another] pre-season camp and then be fully ready. We are going out to Abu Dhabi in early January to play two or three friendlies out there. You need a bit of refreshing and to relax, and you do get a bit of energy back from the sun.

“Before that? Well, I haven’t had a chance to spend Christmas with my family in Austria for six years – so that’s what I will do this year. Hamburg players have got 10 days off, which I am very happy about!

Elgin City 2-6 Rangers

Lee McCulloch and Andy Little grabbed doubles as Rangers eased to a win over Elgin City to stretch their lead at the top of Division Three to nine points.

Little fired Rangers ahead after only four minutes, but Daniel Moore’s fine strike levelled for plucky Elgin.

Although Little tapped in again for the visitors, City replied once more through a Mark Nicolson free-kick.

But two clinical McCulloch finishes and powerful strikes by Lewis Macleod and Kyle Hutton ended Elgin’s hopes.

That ended a miserable fixture for the Borough Briggs club, who had already suffered a £25,000 fine and the loss of live television money after the initial scheduled date was postponed because they sold too many tickets.

Rangers took an early lead against the side sitting second in the table.

Little was put through behind the Elgin defence and, although it initially looked like he had taken the ball too wide when rounding goalkeeper John Gibson, he managed to squeeze it inside the near post.

But Elgin, who lost 3-0 at Ibrox in Scottish Cup this month, refused to be overawed and had already created a couple of half chances by the time Moore fired a superb drive into the far corner from 20 yards.

Just as they had done after being reduced to 10 men in midweek against Annan Athletic, Rangers responded to the threat by restoring the lead, this time within seven minutes.

David Templeton’s cross from the byeline found Little, who side-footed home from close range.

Another seven minutes, another goal – and another superb Elgin equaliser.

The home side were awarded a free-kick 22 yards out and, although Nicolson’s fine curler over the wall took a slight deflection, it always looked to have the better of goalkeeper Neil Alexander.

Elgin were matching their more illustrious visitors in terms of possession, but McCulloch’s international class proved to be the difference.

With Brazilian defender Emilson Cribari making his return after two months out through injury, McCulloch had been pushed back up front in place of Francisco Sandaza.

And he gathered Little’s low pass before swivelling inside the penalty box and firing a piledriver off the underside of the crossbar from eight yards.

Elgin were more wasteful in front of goal when Alexander spilled a high Moore cross under pressure and Gunn fired wildly over from 12 yards.

Rangers made their hosts pay for their profligacy and McCulloch found the far corner with a low drive on the turn after being set up by Templeton on the edge of the penalty box.

If that did not kill of the game as a contest, Macleod made sure four minutes later with another grass-cutter from 18 yards through a sea of legs.

Robbie Crawford and Chris Hegarty both forced good saves from Gibson before Little sent a glancing header just wide.

Hutton grabbed his first goal for Rangers with a beauty from long range before blotting his copybook by pulling down Stuart Lesley.

However, Moore’s poorly-taken penalty was pushed away by Alexander – the goalkeeper’s second penalty save of the week as he helped Rangers to a commanding lead in the Division Three table.
