Manchester United secured their fifth win in seven Premier League games as victory at Newcastle sent them second.
Starting the day seven points adrift of leaders Chelsea, it was vital for the visitors to pick up three points, and two headers from corners in the first 15 minutes set them on their way.
Jonny Evans was first to make the net bulge before fellow defender Patrice Evra repeated the trick moments later.
Tom Cleverley made it 3-0 when he curled the ball into the top corner.
The midfielder might have been trying to find Robin van Persie at the far post, but the ball flew out of the reach of home keeper Steve Harper and into the goal.
While the goal may have had a touch of good fortune, there was nothing lucky about the Old Trafford club’s overall display.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were rampant in the opening quarter, helped by some amateur Newcastle defending at set-pieces, and twice went close before the first goal.
Danny Welbeck, who played furthest forward in a three-man attack featuring Wayne Rooney and Van Persie, was first to try his luck but struck a woefully tame shot from six yards.
Harper then had to guard his near post to stop Van Persie’s toe-poke from sneaking in, but he had no chance when Evans powered home a header after eight minutes for only his second goal for the Red Devils.
Set-piece pace-setters
Manchester United have now scored five goals from corners this season, more than any other side in the division
Newcastle had the jitters and could have fallen further behind but, after creating another chance for himself when he closed down the dawdling Harper just inside the area, Welbeck failed to find the empty net.
However, the visitors made the pressure count again a couple of minutes later when Evra advanced from the edge of the area to head in his first goal for the club in two seasons.
The highest scoring match between the teams at the ground was in January 1960, when the hosts won 7-3, and with only 15 minutes on the clock another 10-goal feast – all scored by the visiting team – did not seem totally impossible.
But the attacking waves from the visitors died down, allowing Newcastle to come back into the match.
Magpies boss Alan Pardew tinkered with their tactics and had a quick word with his backline as Evans received treatment for an injury, and that seemed to help mend the leak in defence.
But the home side were also lacking inspiration in attack and once again the Demba Ba-Papiss Cisse partnership failed to shine, although they did suffer from poor service.
The pair were central to Newcastle’s best effort, though. Ba flicked a header towards goal and when the ball came off the post it was nodded towards the net by Cisse, but the agile David De Gea just managed to claw it away before it had crossed the line.
Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye also had efforts on goal, but they were as half-hearted as the Magpies’ display.
Cleverley rounded off a miserable day for Newcastle with his spectacular effort.

A casual buy no. 47
October 2, 2012
It will be a long time before I do another ‘A casual buy’ post, not this year anyway, probably not for another year. The reason is this latest purchase. The ’30/30 Anniversary Jacket’ from Stone Island. This came at an eye-popping price, but I couldn’t resist owning a piece of SI history, plus you’re really getting two jackets for the price of one, or more accurately one and a half jackets, as will be seen. This will also be a very long, photo-heavy, post.
The blurb for this jacket from Stone Island themselves states:
The 30/30 jacket is a cross section of the state of the art of Stone Island. A testament to three decades of exploration and development, it has been designed to embody the spirit of Stone Islands endless creativity. Linked by the signature looped rigging system, both the jacket shell and jacket liner are reversible. These can be worn, either together or alone, in a total of 10 different ways. The transformative properties of the fabrics mean that these 10 ways can each be worn in 3 different states: Ice, Reflective, and Normal; resulting in a total of 30 different jacket modes. The numerous details, such as the reversible cuff and liner button, have been specially engineered to ensure the smooth operation of all jacket features in every worn state. The inclusion of both natural and man made face fabrics, as well as engineered knit and down components, ensure that the jacket can be worn across the broadest spectrum of climates and situations.
Total ways: 10
- Shell alone: Raso face outside
- Shell alone: Prismatic face outside
- Liner alone: Knit face outside
- Liner alone: Thermo Reflective face outside
- Shell and liner together: Raso face over Knit face
- Shell and liner together: Prismatic face over Knit face
- Shell and liner together: Raso face over Thermo Reflective face
- Shell and liner together: Prismatic face over Thermo Reflective face
- Shell and liner together: Thermo Reflective face over Raso face
- Shell and liner together: Thermo Reflective face over Prismatic face
Total States: 3
- Normal
- Ice
- Reflective
Total Modes: 30
Wow, there you have it. For ‘Ice’ read ‘really cold weather’. For ‘Reflective’ read ‘night time’.
I then started putting it all together in the different ways the two elements interact. The jacket(s) have the famous SI ‘Dutch rope system’ to keep both jackets tied together once assembled. They also have inner sleeve and collar buttons to hold it together. I would’ve been out in the yard all day tying up little loops of cord, fuck that. So, I’ve just put one jacket loosely over the other as best I can for this next sequence of phots, to give a rough idea of how it looks in various guises; it will look better properly ‘joined together’ later. Promise.
Ok, after playing around with the jacket and getting sore arms – it’s a heavy thing when put together – I decided which way I liked to wear it best. I like the Mussola on it’s own, but Winter is nearly here and the best way to get this worn is to put it together as one. So, I roped it all up like a good Dutchman, and voila, below is the jacket assembled the way I intend to wear it (for now). So, by Stone Island’s own criteria it’s ‘Shell and Liner together: Thermo Reflective face over Prismatic face’. It is a beautiful garment, but as I said before, that’s it for a long time for clothes shopping for me, this was pricier than it should have been, but I had to have one. That’s all folks.

Ayr smoke bomb fan jailed
Oct 5 2012 by Jen Buchanan, Ayrshire Post
A drunken Ayr United fan threw a smoke canister into a crowd of his fellow supporters. And boozed up X said he did it to “to liven things up”.
Unemployed X has now been jailed for six months and banned from attending any football matches for seven years.
X hurled the canister when Ayr United played Airdrie United in a match at New Broomfield on May 9 this year.
CCTV captured the 40-year-old throwing the smoke bomb which landed 10 rows into the east stand, where the Ayr United away support was gathered.
Stewards quickly intervened and X was arrested by police.
When he appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court this week, X’s defence lawyer said: “He is a loyal Ayr United supporter and goes to all the home and away matches.
“ Of the 1800 people 800 were Ayr United supporters.
“It is clear from watching the CCTV he was approached by a younger man.
“The score was 0-0 and he thought it would liven things up.
“He threw it among his own supporters and he accepts he did throw the device.
“He had a great deal to drink that day. But he is adamant he didn’t bring the device to the match.
The court heard that X already has a criminal record.
Handing down sentence, Sheriff Robert Dickson told him: “This is the third football related offence you have been involved in.
“This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated by any football fans.
“We don’t want football fans like you and I’m quite sure Ayr United doesn’t want fans like you behaving in this way.”
Chief Inspector for South Ayrshire, Neil Kerr, welcomed the sentence. He said: “The seven year football banning order will give X plenty of time to reflect on his future behaviour.”
