Rangers produced their best performance of the season to knock Scottish Premier League leaders Motherwell out of the Scottish Communities League Cup.

After an even first period, Lee McCulloch headed the home side in front early in the second half.

Shortly afterwards Dean Shiels struck a low volley past Darren Randolph from 12 yards out.

Neil Alexander saved brilliantly from Tom Hateley but Rangers were good value for their victory.

It delighted the vast majority of the fans inside Ibrox, who had spent chunks of the night deriding the SPL.

Shiels set up the first and scored the second

Rangers looked like they meant business from the off, with Shiels sliding in to a first-minute challenge to release Fraser Aird, but Francisco Sandaza just failed to convert the youngster’s cross.

Motherwell looked startled by the intensity of that start, but gradually eased their way into the game, with Hateley’s 25-yard drive forcing Alexander to look lively.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men for a lengthy period midway through the first half, following a nasty clash of heads between Sandaza and Shaun Hutchison.

Sandaza was unable to continue and was replaced by Kyle Hutton while Hutchison, who was taken up the Ibrox tunnel looking like an extra from a Wes Craven movie, returned after several minutes of treatment.

McCulloch should have given the home side the lead on 28 minutes following terrific work by Shiels down the left.

The Northern Irishman slipped the ball through the legs of Hutchison before squaring for his captain, who made it too easy for Randolph to gather with a shot straight at him from 12 yards.

Motherwell spurned a great chance of their own 10 minutes before the break.

Nicky Law was released by a quickly-taken free-kick, but as Alexander rushed way out of his box in what looked a dangerous ploy, the keeper nicked the ball away from the midfielder as he tried to take it round him.

The huge Ibrox crowd got what it had been waiting for five minutes after the interval.

A short corner was taken to Shiels and his whipped cross found McCulloch, who had shaken off his marker to head in from six yards.

Moments later, Aird cut in from the left before flashing a shot across the face of goal as Rangers sought to build on their momentum.

And they did just that on 56 minutes as Anestis Argyriou pulled a cross from the right back for Shiels, who volleyed sweetly low past Randolph from near the penalty spot.

Motherwell thought they had pulled a goal back four minutes later, as Hateley swung a free-kick across goal. It was heading in at the back post but Alexander did remarkably to get down to his left to maintain the two-goal lead.

Aird, making his first start for Rangers, came close to capping a good performance with a goal, weaving past a couple of challenges, but his final effort was kept out by the legs of Randolph.

Henrik Ojaama was foiled by Alexander as Motherwell tried to claw their way back into the game, while Rangers substitute Barrie NcKay brought out two decent stops from Randolph.

The Motherwell manager Stuart McCall had questioned the notion that his side were pre-match favourites, and he was proved correct as they tumbled out to the Third Division team.

John Terry banned and fined by FA over Anton Ferdinand incident

Chelsea captain John Terry has been banned for four matches and fined £220,000 for racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

The Football Association found Terry guilty following a four-day hearing.

Analysis

“One of the first questions many people will ask is why the Terry ban is so much less than that handed to Luis Suarez of Liverpool last year. We await the written judgement, which will no doubt explain the difference.

“This is a significant day – the end of an 11-month saga, a case that was dragged through the courts. The language, insults and abuse laid bare have made this a really uncomfortable episode for the sport.

“Terry must now live with that stigma, the ignominy of a ban. It’s not a career-ending ban, but it will be interesting to see what Chelsea do. Will they suspend him, drop him or back him? The club has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism.”

A spokesman for Terry said the player was “disappointed” the FA had reached a “different conclusion” to the “not guilty verdict of a court of law”.

In July, the ex-England skipper, 31, was cleared by Westminster Magistrates’ Court of racially abusing Ferdinand.

The Terry statement continued: “He has asked for the detailed written reasons of the decision and will consider them carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal.”

The verdict released by the FA said: “The Football Association charged Mr Terry on Friday 27 July 2012 with using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Queens Park Rangers’ Anton Ferdinand and which included a reference to colour and/or race contrary to FA Rule E3 [2] in relation to the Queens Park Rangers FC versus Chelsea FC fixture at Loftus Road on 23 October 2011.”

Terry will have 14 days from receiving the written reasons to decide whether to lodge an appeal. The ban and fine will not come into effect until after the centre-half has decided what to do.

A statement from his club added: “Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today’s decision by the Football Association regarding John Terry.

“We also recognise that John has the right to appeal that decision. It is therefore inappropriate for us to comment further on the matter at this time.”

Terry admitted using the word “black” and swearing at Ferdinand but insisted he had only been repeating words he thought the Rangers defender had accused him of saying.

MP calls for Terry admission

The FA’s decision to press ahead with their own charges led Terry, on the eve of the hearing, to announce he was retiring from international football with immediate effect, saying his position had become “untenable”.

Terry’s legal team argued the governing body’s own rules dictated that his acquittal in court meant the case could not proceed but the FA believed their charge was distinct from the court charge.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was given an eight-match ban when an FA disciplinary panel found him guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra last season.

The panel stated at that time that simply using racist language was enough to constitute a breach of FA rules.

Sectarian advisory group set up

An independent advisory group on tackling sectarianism is to be set up by the Scottish government.

The group, chaired by Dr Duncan Morrow, will be tasked with a range of work to inform policy on sectarianism.

Dr Morrow is a former chief executive of the Community Relations Council in Northern Ireland.

Community Safety Minister Roseanna Cunningham also announced a range of projects tackling sectarianism would share more than £900,000.

She made the announcements while visiting a project in Shotts, North Lanarkshire, which brings older and younger people together through story and song.

Ms Cunningham said: “We are committed to eradicating the scourge of sectarianism from Scottish society and we have been testing out a variety of approaches to help us achieve this.

“The establishment of the Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism in Scotland will form a key plank of this wider work.

“I’m also delighted to announce further funding to support a wide range of projects across Scotland which are tackling sectarianism in an innovative way.

“We have always said that tackling bigotry and hatred isn’t just about legislation, but about wider action to help bring communities together, and that’s why we set aside £9m over three years to take this forward.”

Consensus figure

She said the government would be gathering evidence on the nature of sectarianism in Scotland as well as the impact and effectiveness of these different interventions, and the Advisory Group would play a crucial role in this work.

Dr Morrow has 10 years experience working in Northern Ireland as a member and chair of the Community Relations Council.

He has worked with many organisations tackling sectarianism in Northern Ireland and represents a strong consensus figure who commands the respect of both Protestant and Catholic communities.

Dr Morrow said: “I am honoured to have been asked by the minister to chair this group on such an important but controversial topic.

“The advisory group will work hard to ensure that our advice is rooted in real evidence and practical experience.

“We look forward to engaging with those who have worked to reduce sectarianism over many years and with organisations, agencies and people who have to deal with the reality of ongoing violence and exclusion in coming to our conclusions.”
