Linfield beat Portadown to secure Premiership crown

Linfield beat Portadown 2-1 at Windsor Park to retain their Premiership crown.

Philip Lowry scored the opening goal in the 70th minute, running onto a through ball from Robert Garrett, before finishing coolly past Tuda Murphy.

Richard Lecky looked to have postponed the Blues’ title celebrations when he scored on 85, but Jamie Mulgrew slotted home the winner two minutes from time.

For the Blues, it is their 51st domestic league championship success and their sixth in seven years.

It is boss David Jeffrey’s ninth league success as manager of the south Belfast club.

Peter Thompson fired over the bar early on and Jamie Mulgrew also had chances for Linfield, while Alan Blayney saved a first-half Matthew Brown effort.

Lecky’s equaliser was a fine finish, while Mulgrew took advantage of a defensive slip up to round goalkeeper Tuda Murphy and fire home and spark the celebrations among the home fans.

After the game, Jeffrey described the club’s title victory as “the best one yet”.

“Portadown played well in the first half, but we were better in the second half and plugged away, showing desire and determination.

“I am ecstatic – what an emphatic way to win a league title.

“It is a tremendous feat and the players deserve so much credit – expectation levels are so high and the pressure on them is immense.

“Their quality of football, commitment and the sacrifices they have made are to be applauded.”

Rangers boss Ally McCoist reveals US bidder talks

Rangers manager Ally McCoist revealed he has held discussions with the American bidder who is trying to take the Ibrox club out of administration.

Speaking after the 3-1 win against St Mirren , McCoist said Bill Miller was “enthusiastic and extremely positive”.

Paul Murray’s Blue Knights group and a Singapore consortium believed to be fronted by Bill Ng have also got final offers on the table for Rangers.

McCoist feels there is reason to believe Rangers can avoid liquidation.

There’s a distinct possibility that we can come out of administration through a CVA

Ally McCoist Rangers manager

That would be achieved by the successful implementation of a company voluntary arrangement, where creditors would receive a fraction of the amounts due to them.

Administrators Duff & Phelps this week released a document charting the extent of Rangers’ liabilities with debts of around £55m confirmed, potentially rising to £134m .

“He said there is still the possibility of the CVA, which he would be for,” McCoist said of his conference call with Miller.

“He is aware of the fact that liquidation might be a route but there is no way he said liquidation was the route he wanted to go down. Not at all.

“It’s difficult when you haven’t met somebody but, having spoken to Bill for about an hour, I would have to say I was very impressed.

“If and when the time comes, I’ll certainly look forward to meeting him.

“I’m ready, willing and available whenever the Singaporean consortium want to talk to me – if they want to talk to me, of course.

“They might not want to talk to me and they are well within their rights.

“But, if they do, I’ll certainly be available to speak to them and meet them whenever and wherever they want to. I’ve had no contact at all from the Singaporean bidders.”

Meanwhile, McCoist “wasn’t surprised” by the headline figures from Duff & Phelps’ report, adding he hoped the £134m was “a worst case scenario”.

“There’s a lot of ifs and buts in that figure,” he said.

Supporters displayed red cards in protest against any future plans to liquidate Rangers during the defeat of Saints and McCoist sympathises with the Ibrox faithful.

“I can totally understand where the fans are coming from because it’s the feeling of the vast majority of fans and, indeed, everybody within the football club,” he said.

“There is still encouragement from the fact that there’s a distinct possibility that we can come out of administration through a CVA.

“That’s what nearly everybody wants, that’s still got a good chance. There is obviously the threat of liquidation, which would certainly not be the desired option of the majority of Rangers fans.”

McCoist was pleased to give those fans a third straight victory shortly after Celtic had clinched the Scottish Premier League title with a 6-0 hammering of Kilmarnock.

“I said yesterday if and when Celtic win the title, they would be thoroughly deserving winners and nothing’s changed today,” added McCoist.

Drunk thug given four year football ban

An Alfreton man has been given a four year football banning order after repeatedly threatening another fan while drunk.

X was arrested after a match between Alfreton Town and Lincoln FC on October 29, 2011.

He was charged with a public order offence and on April 2 magistrates in Chesterfield gave the 45-year-old a four year Banning Order, a fine of £275 anda 12-month alcohol exclusion order banning him from 18 pubs and social clubs in the Alfreton and Swanwick area.

PC Roger Brown, Football Intelligence and Licensing Officer, said: “Derbyshire Constabulary will use all legislation necessary to deal with alcohol related disorder as robustly as possible.

“This will hopefully send a clear message that disorder of any kind will not be tolerated. Alfreton Town FC and Derbyshire Constabulary continue to work in partnership to prevent and detect football related disorder.”

A Football Banning Order is a measure police can take to help prevent violence and disorder at football matches, both at home and abroad and a breach of an order could lead to a prison sentence.
