Salomon Kalou scored a late winner as Chelsea put one foot in the Champions League semi-finals after a first-leg quarter-final victory in Lisbon.

Forward Kalou had earlier wasted a fine chance, but made no mistake to side-foot home a cross from the impressive Fernando Torres.

Chelsea were full value for the victory, with Juan Mata denied by a post when the game was goalless.

David Luiz made a goal-line clearance to deny Benfica’s Oscar Cardozo.

Chelsea caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo will know the job is only half done and will not be looking beyond the second leg at Stamford Bridge on 4 April.

Match analysis

“When Luiz gets it right, he really does have the raw material to be one of the best around. I’ve stuck by Torres all the way through. I still think he is a fantastic player. The fact that others cannot see the positions he runs into, that has been the problem.”

But the Londoners will only have themselves to blame if they do not reach the semi-finals after a performance full of spirit, guts and determination in Portugal.

Di Matteo produced a major surprise before the game by naming Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard – who both started and scored in the impressive 4-1 win over Napoli two weeks ago – on the substitutes’ bench.

Michael Essien was also on the bench as Di Matteo opted for a heavy reliance on players with Portuguese experience.

Paulo Ferreira filled the problem position of right-back – his first start of 2012 – while Raul Meireles was also recalled. In addition, former Benfica players David Luiz and Ramires both started against their old club.

Yet ex-Porto player Meireles, booed throughout by the home fans, found himself booked inside the opening 20 minutes for a cynical foul on Nicolas Gaitan, before Chelsea had a narrow escape after their defence was sliced open far too easily.

Benfica’s side was influenced by a strong South American presence, and Paraguay international Oscar Cardozo’s first-time shot – after chesting down Bruno Cesar’s lofted pass – flew narrowly wide of Petr Cech’s net.

The hosts, currently third in their domestic league, carved out some decent openings but failed to hurt a Chelsea side that finished the first half strongly.

After Torres had engineered an opening when twisting and turning on the edge of the Benfica area, Meireles forced home keeper Artur into his first serious save with a powerful low effort just before the interval.

DID YOU KNOW?

Chelsea had won only once away from home in Europe since October 2010 prior to this game – and that was at FC Copenhagen, who were in the midst of their winter break

Di Matteo’s bold selection plans were paying off.

While Cech had to be alert to keep out Cesar’s long-range attempt, Chelsea’s back four of Ferreira, Luiz, John Terry and Ashley Cole endured a comfortable first half compared to the opening 45 minutes in Italy against Napoli last month .

It was the calm before the storm.

The second-half was only a couple of minutes old when Cardozo dispatched a fierce volley towards the Chelsea net but, with Cech beaten, Luiz was in the right place to make a crucial clearance off the line and frustrate his former club.

Then Cech was forced to save smartly from Cesar before Chelsea spurned a glorious chance to score a priceless away goal.

With 53 minutes on the clock, the impressive Torres produced an inch-perfect cross for Kalou, who headed wastefully over in front of a gaping Benfica net.

Chelsea were clearly looking to establish a lead to take back to London.

Mata was denied by the woodwork after skipping round the keeper following a mistake by Jardel, who was then frustrated by an outstanding Cech save two minutes later in a free-flowing second half.

But with just 15 minutes left, Kalou struck from close range after connecting with a clever cross by Torres to earn his side a victory their hard work deserved.

There was a scare at the death when Ashley Cole almost scored an own goal, but Chelsea survived to ensure their season remains very much alive.

Sam Allardyce defends West Ham style after fan chants

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has defended their recent displays after his own supporters chanted about the side’s style of football.

The Hammers boss vowed to play “the West Ham way” when he took over in June but fans have voiced their displeasure at what they see as direct tactics.

Supporters at the 2-0 win at Peterbrough were heard singing, ‘We’re West Ham United, we play on the floor’.

But Allardyce said: “I’m sick of all that rubbish.”

The victory cemented West Ham’s position in third and closed the gap on second-placed Reading, who the Hammers entertain at Upton Park on Saturday.

Allardyce has been on the receiving end of vocal criticism from fans in previous home matches, something he says he has found surprising.

“I think we’ve lost three at home all season so I don’t know why they [the fans] are not harmonious – you’ll have to ask the fans that,” he told BBC London 94.9.

“Perhaps their expectations are too much and they’re getting a bit carried away, I don’t know.

“The pressure is on us like it is every week. We have more pressure on us than anyone else, but we have to live with that and deliver, and today we did. Let’s hope we do on Saturday.”

The Irons have not lost since a 5-1 defeat at Ipswich Town on 31 January but a run of five consecutive draws, prior to the win over Peterborough, has seen them lose pace with leaders Southampton.

Despite the winless run Allardyce was keen to point out the encouraging performances his side have put in.

“I looked at the facts, and the facts are that at Burnley we’ve out-played them, out-passed them, away from home, and all the other six teams recently we’ve done exactly the same, that we’ve drawn against.

“The only team we didn’t outplay was Southampton with 10 men recently, and that’s probably eight games ago.”

Allardyce’s sides have previously attracted criticism over their style of play and the 57-year-old blamed the media and his previous team’s successes for the criticism of his tactics.

“It didn’t start off from there though [the media] – it started off from other managers many years ago, because they got jealous because I kept beating them.

“It’s there and I just have to carry on, I don’t let it affect me personally, I just know what’s good for the players at West Ham, I know what’s good for West Ham as a football club, and I know how to win football matches.”

Celtic fined £21,000 by Uefa over banner in Udine

Celtic have been fined £21,000 by Uefa for fan-related incidents during their Europa League match against Udinese.

Uefa charged Celtic with “the displaying of an offensive banner and setting off of fireworks by fans” in their match in Italy on 15 December.

The incidents had been included in the match delegate’s report.

Celtic banned a fan for life who they said was responsible for displaying the banner and attacking a steward in Udinese’s Stadio Friuli.

Uefa has confirmed that Celtic were fined on 23 February for breaching article 11 of its disciplinary regulations.

Those regulations include prohibiting the lighting of fireworks and “the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, in particular if it is of a political, offensive or provocative nature”.

The banner displayed during the match criticised European football’s governing body.

Celtic were fined £12,700 by Uefa in December for what was described as illicit chanting by Celtic fans in another Europa League match against Rennes.

Singapore consortium enters battle to take control of Rangers

• Five groups now interested in buying crisis club Rangers
• Administrators to draw up shortlist and analyse offers

A Singapore-based consortium has become the fifth group to lodge a formal takeover bid for Rangers. The offer, made on Friday, will now be considered by the club’s administrators alongside those from the Sale Sharks owner Brian Kennedy, the Blue Knights consortium, Club 9 Sports and an as yet unnamed party.

Representatives of the Chicago-based Club 9 Sports are expected to make a trip to Sunday’s Old Firm game at Ibrox. Despite Kennedy earlier having made sceptical noises about the likelihood of him gaining control of Rangers, he is already thought to have spent about £200,000 on his bid.

Paul Clark, Rangers’ joint administrator, said: “What we want to do is analyse the bids and I would suggest we will be moving to a shortlist that might be two or three bidders at some point next week.”

Clark reaffirmed his desire for Rangers to exit administration promptly. “Our preference would be for somebody else to be in control of the football club other than us by the end of the season,” he said,”so they have got the whole close season, the whole transfer window, they have got proper preparation for the new season.”

The administrator expressed frustration with the Scottish Premier League, which is conducting an investigation into allegations that Rangers have made undisclosed payments to players.

“We have written to the SPL asking why it is necessary at this time to conduct an inquiry,” Clark said. “They have known about the issue for some time, we still don’t have the [tax] tribunal’s decision and we would like to understand why they feel they need the inquiry now.

“We will of course continue to co-operate with all the footballing authorities but with everything else that’s going on it is a bit of an unnecessary hindrance for us when we still await the tribunal’s decision.

“It is something we share the fans’ frustration on, there’s other work we could be getting on with. The tribunal has not yet confirmed Rangers is responsible so therefore why do the SPL feel they need to look at it? If they wanted to look at it, why didn’t they look at it at the time it was going on?”
