Didier Drogba’s assured finish earned Chelsea a narrow victory over 10-man Stoke in Roberto di Matteo’s first Premier League game in charge.

Stoke played most of the game with 10 men after Ricardo Fuller was shown a straight red card for a stamp on Branislav Ivanovic.

Chelsea hit the bar twice but had to be patient against a dogged Stoke side.

But Drogba eventually made the breakthrough, rounding Asmir Begovic to record his 100th Premier League goal.

The best club managers in world football have been linked with the Chelsea vacancy following Andre Villas-Boas’s sacking and, while it is perhaps inevitable that the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are coveted by Blues owner Roman Abramovich, Chelsea will first need to secure Champions League football under Di Matteo to attract the coaches they crave.

And the Italian gave the old guard a vote of confidence by including Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou and Drogba in the starting line-up. Captain John Terry and Ashley Cole also returned to a Chelsea side with an average age of 28.5.

Chelsea fired a couple of early warning signs with Ivanovic heading over Lampard’s corner before Gary Cahill forced a diving save from Begovic after a purposeful run and shot from the edge of the box.

Stoke fashioned only one clear chance during a first half in which they were second best but, after Terry lost his footing and allowed Jonathan Walters a clear run at goal, Cahill got across to make a diving block.

Stoke, who have not won at Stamford Bridge in the league since a 1-0 victory in April 1974, made their task a lot harder when Fuller was shown a straight red card for a mindless and unnecessary stamp on Ivanovic, leaving referee Andre Marriner with no choice but to dismiss the striker.

Chelsea were positive throughout and hit the woodwork twice before half-time, with Terry’s header grazing the crossbar before Ivanovic pounced on a poor headed clearance by Robert Huth to hammer a shot against the bar.

Stoke were disciplined and determined throughout and, even after the introductions of Juan Mata and David Luiz, the Potters repelled wave after wave of Chelsea attack, with Begovic doing well to keep out Drogba’s goalbound free-kick.

Terry fired a low shot a whisker wide moments later but Chelsea finally penetrated the Stoke defence – and it came courtesy of another Stamford Bridge stalwart.

Latching onto Mata’s cute through-ball 12 yards out, Drogba kept his head to poke the ball around Begovic and stroke into the empty net, becoming the first African player to reach the milestone of 100 Premier League goals.

Stoke replied with a short period of pressure, but the best the visitors could muster was an effort from the halfway line by Andy Wilkinson that almost caught out Petr Cech and a speculative effort from Cameron Jerome, who could only thump a shot into the advertising hoardings despite being one-on-one with Cahill.

But Cahill and Terry were commanding at the back and Stoke rarely threatened.

Mata could have made the win certain but his beautifully struck free-kick hit the post, before substitute Daniel Sturridge shot just wide after cutting in from the right.

Chelsea dominated the game and, while Abramovich was not at Stamford Bridge for the game, the Russian will be hoping Di Matteo can replicate Guus Hiddink’s achievement in 2009 of steering the club towards a late-season flourish.

Rangers: Paul Murray’s Blue Knights finalise offer to buy club

Ex-Rangers director Paul Murray says his “Blue Knights” consortium is finalising an offer to buy the club.

Ticketus, who advanced money to Rangers in return for several seasons’ worth of ticket sales, are part of the consortium along with fans’ groups.Murray feels his party “are able to deliver an attractive solution”.On Friday, Rangers’ players and management agreed to temporary wage cuts to help the club fulfil its remaining fixtures this season.Businessman Murray left the Rangers board shortly after Craig Whyte’s takeover of the club last May.And his group says “new and experienced” board members could be appointed in the event of a successful purchase.

We believe working alongside the Blue Knights and fans’ representatives offers the best chance of the club surviving and becoming a viable business

Ticketus

The Blue Knights comprises Paul Murray, the Rangers Supporters Assembly, the Rangers Supporters Association, the Rangers Supporters Trust and Ticketus.

Since Rangers went into administration on 14 February, Murray’s name has been consistently linked with a fresh takeover bid .

He said: “I believe that the Blue Knights, working in collaboration with the fans and Ticketus, are able to deliver an attractive solution that will see the club emerge from administration with a clear plan for the future that will bring the financial stability that the club needs.

“We firmly believe that a CVA [company voluntary arrangement] is the best way forward and we are working hard to offer a solution that will enable this to happen.

“As the administrators have stated, the alternative route of putting the club into liquidation is much less attractive for creditors, supporters and players, with its capacity to destroy value.

“Under current Uefa rules, a football club is banned from European competition for three years in the event of liquidation. Taking this route would have a significant impact on Rangers’s future revenues and the overall financial viability of the club, so it is something we want to avoid.”

Rangers’s administrators, Duff and Phelps, have already ruled out the possibility of the club playing in European competition next season as audited accounts are unlikely to be signed off by the 31 March deadline.

A deadline of 16 March has been set by Duff and Phelps for parties interested in buying Rangers to come forward.

Ticketus, whose advanced funds were used as part of Whyte’s takeover , stated: “We believe that the Blue Knights understand very clearly what needs to be done to stabilise the club, and represent the most attractive long-term solution to Rangers’ financial situation.

“We are therefore backing their bid and will be an active partner, contributing to a successful outcome.

“We believe working alongside the Blue Knights and fans’ representatives offers the best chance of the club surviving and becoming a viable business.”

Earlier, Ticketus had indicated they would be confident of winning any case relating to recovering the money they forwarded as part of Whyte’s takeover.

The firm has taken legal advice after Duff and Phelps pursued the release of £3.6m from an account belonging to Whyte.

A High Court judge ordered a trial date to decide who owns the money with Ticketus, HM Revenue and Customs, Merchants Turnaround and the pension fund Gerome contesting ownership of the funds.

HMRC want £2.8m, Merchants Turnaround is seeking £1m and Gerome is claiming £2.9m.

Rangers’s joint administrator David Whitehouse emerged from the High Court in London on Thursday pleased that the judge had ordered a further hearing on the club’s claim on £3.6m for 30 March.

Whitehouse argued that the money, frozen in his firm’s lawyer’s account, belongs to Rangers and should be released to ease the club’s plight.

Lawyers for the club’s administrator told the High Court in London they had expected to find £9.5m in the account.

But they said there was only £3.6m in it and several parties are claiming ownership of the money.

Ten Aberdeen fans arrested in raids over football violence at games against the Old Firm

TEN men were arrested across Scotland today in connection with football violence, police said.

An operation between Grampian, Fife and Strathclyde Police forces and the Football Co-ordinating Unit for Scotland led to eight arrests in the North-East and two in Fife.

Grampian Police said the majority of the arrests today were in connection with trouble ahead of a Rangers versus Aberdeen match in Glasgow on January 21.

Two police officers were injured in the trouble on Copland Road, next to Ibrox Subway station. A series of arrests had already been made in connection with the incident.

The other two arrests this morning were over city centre violence before Aberdeen’s home match with Celtic last weekend.

Grampian Chief Superintendent Adrian Watson said: “These arrests should send out a clear message to the handful of people intent on using football as a platform to commit acts of violence that behaviour of this type will not be tolerated in any shape or form.

“They are certainly not the people that the club or city want to be associated with.

“My organisation has worked closely with many partners including Aberdeen Football Club and its supporters in making the match-day experience at Pittodrie one of the safest in the country. That will not change.”

Inspector Brian Henderson from Fife Constabulary said: “This arrest shows that no matter where or when people commit a football-related offence, they will be arrested, charged and held to account for their actions.

“Fife is a low-crime area and we wish to keep it this way. There is no place in our community for people who engage in this kind of behaviour, and we welcome the assistance given to us by FoCUS in helping bring them to justice.”

The eight men arrested over the trouble in Glasgow were taken to the Strathclyde area and are due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

Police said further arrests could be made over the coming days.

Ten people held over football violence at SPL matches

Arrests made in connection with alleged disorder at two SPL matches involving Aberdeen against Rangers and Celtic

Nine people have been arrested in a series of dawn raids in connection with violence at football matches.

Officers from Grampian, Fife and Strathclyde police forces carried out the raids around 5am on Friday in the north-east and Fife over incidents at two SPL games involving Aberdeen FC.

Two were arrested in relation to Saturday’s match between Aberdeen and Celtic at Pittodrie Stadium.

Ten people held over football violence at SPL matches

The other eight, six in Aberdeen and two in Fife, were arrested in relation to incidents at the Rangers v Aberdeen match at Ibrox in Glasgow on January 21. All of those seven arrested are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

Chief superintendent Adrian Watson, of Grampian Police, said: “These arrests should send out a clear message to the handful of people intent on using football as a platform to commit acts of violence that behaviour of this type will not be tolerated in any shape or form. They are certainly not the people that the club or city want to be associated with.

“My organisation has worked closely with many partners including Aberdeen Football Club and its supporters in making the match-day experience at Pittodrie one of the safest in the country. That will not change.”

Aberdeen FC hosted the first SPL police-free football match last year.

Chief Supt Watson said: “This effectively allowed me to remove officers from the ground and surrounding area and put them back into their communities in the city and north-east, where the over-whelming majority of folk want them to be. This was only done after a great deal of work with our partners and on a proper risk assessment of each fixture.

“We will not compromise on safety at the ground or outside on a match day and have proved where we need to be visible and take action, we will do just that.”

A Grampian Police spokesman said other arrests “may be expected”.

Inspector Brian Henderson, of Fife Constabulary, said: “This arrest shows that no matter where or when people commit a football-related offence, they will be arrested, charged and held to account for their actions.

“Fife is a low-crime area and we wish to keep it this way. There is no place in our community for people who engage in this kind of behaviour, and we welcome the assistance given to us by FoCUS in helping bring them to justice.”

Arrests over Aberdeen, Rangers and Celtic football violence

Police raid in Aberdeen

Police raids in Aberdeen were part of the morning operation

Ten people from across the north east of Scotland and Fife have been arrested in connection with football violence.

The dawn raids at a number of addresses were carried out by Grampian and Strathclyde police forces.

The majority of the arrests were related to trouble involving Aberdeen supporters before the game against Rangers at Ibrox earlier this year.

Two arrests were linked to violence on Aberdeen’s Union Street last Saturday when Aberdeen played Celtic.

Eight of the men were arrested during raids at addresses in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, the other two were in Fife.

‘Clear message’

Seven of those detained are suspected of being involved in trouble before the Rangers versus Aberdeen match in January.

Two police officers were injured in the clashes.

About 35 officers from the Grampian and Strathclyde forces were involved in the morning operation.

Grampian Police Ch Supt Adrian Watson said: “These arrests should send out a clear message to the handful of people intent on using football as a platform to commit acts of violence that behaviour of this type will not be tolerated in any shape or form.”
