Villas-Boas sacked by Chelsea: AVB goes after just nine months

Andre Villas-Boas has been sacked by Chelsea after less than a year in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s decision comes on the back of Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by West Bromwich Albion and a run of just three Premier League wins in their last 12 games.

The 34-year-old Portuguese only took over as manager in June 2011.

Former Chelsea midfielder Roberto di Matteo has been put in charge as first-team coach on an interim basis until the end of the season.

  • 22 June 2011: Signs three-year contract after Blues pay Porto £13.3m in compensation
  • Aug 2011: Pays combined transfer fees of around £45m to bring in Oriol Romeu, Romelu Lukaku and Juan Mata
  • Sept 2011: Four-game winning streak ends with 3-1 defeat at Manchester United
  • Oct-Nov 2011: Chelsea win twice in nine games, a run that includes 5-3 home defeat by Arsenal
  • Jan-Mar 2012: Chelsea win one in seven games since beating QPR on 28 Jan
  • 4 March: Villas-Boas sacked by Chelsea

A statement on the club’s website read: “Unfortunately the results and performances of the team have not been good enough and were showing no signs of improving at a key time in the season.

“The club is still competing in the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup, as well as challenging for a top-four spot in the Premier League, and we aim to remain as competitive as possible on all fronts.

“With that in mind, we felt our only option was to make a change at this time.”

Chelsea are facing two tough games in the FA Cup and Champions League over the next 10 days.

They visit Championship side Birmingham for an FA Cup fifth-round replay on Tuesday and the following week they must overturn a 3-1 deficit against Italian side Napoli at Stamford Bridge to avoid exiting the Champions League at the last 16 stage.

Villas-Boas first came to Chelsea as a scout from 2004-2007 during Jose Mourinho’s tenure, and five major domestic trophies were won in that period.

He also assisted Mourinho at Porto and Inter Milan, and worked in a similar role under Sir Bobby Robson during the former England manager’s spell in charge of Porto.

Villas-Boas: The first news conference

His first club managerial role was with Portuguese side Academica in October 2009, but after moving to Porto the following summer he won the Portuguese League and Cup double plus the Europa League.

Since Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003, the club has captured three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups but have not won a trophy since Carlo Ancelloti led them to the League and FA Cup double for the first time in their history in 2010.

After being recruited by Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich in what was thought to be an attempt to implement a more attractive style of play, Villas-Boas suffered early defeats against Manchester United and Arsenal and questions were raised about his tactical strategies.

Villas-Boas also appeared to have a difficult working relationship with senior players at Chelsea, several of whom were only slightly younger than him.

Nicolas Anelka, 32, and experienced defender Alex left the club early in his reign and after Frank Lampard, 33, was left out of the team he said playing under Villas-Boas had “not been ideal.”

CHELSEA MANAGERS UNDER ROMAN ABRAMOVICH

  • Claudio Ranieri: Sep 2000 to May 2004
  • Jose Mourinho: Jun 2004 to Sep 2007
  • Avram Grant: Sep 2007 to May 2008
  • Luiz Felipe Scolari: Jul 2008 to Feb 2009
  • Guus Hiddink: Feb 2009 to May 2009
  • Carlo Ancelotti: Jun 2009 to May 2011
  • Andre Villas-Boas: Jun 2011 to Mar 2012

Villas-Boas admitted in December that the Blues could no longer win the Premier League after they were left 11 points adrift of the leaders following a 1-1 draw with Fulham on Boxing Day.

After Saturday’s defeat at the Hawthorns he said: “It’s not been good enough for some time. We’re fifth and if that is the case, something’s wrong. Every defeat piles more pressure on any Chelsea manager. We don’t win enough and that does not make us proud.”

Di Matteo, 41, played for Chelsea from 1996-2002 and won two FA Cups, scoring inside 42 seconds in the 1997 final against Middlesbrough, the fastest goal in a final at the old Wembley.

He also won the League Cup, the Uefa Cup, the Uefa Super Cup and the Charity Shield whilst at Stamford Bridge.

His managerial career began at Milton Keynes Dons in 2008 and he guided them to the League One play-offs in his first season, losing to Scunthorpe on penalties in the semi-finals.

Having moved to West Brom he secured promotion to the Premier League in his first season as the Baggies finished runners-up to Newcastle but his team were thrashed 6-0 in their first match in the top flight, coincidentally at Chelsea, and he was sacked in February 2011.

Four months later Di Matteo was named as assistant to Villas-Boas before their partnership was ended, in another ironic twist, following defeat at the Italian’s former club.

New bigot laws kick off… just 2 fans get carted off

Published: Today at 00:28

COPS arrested just two football fans at matches involving the Old Firm yesterday — on the first weekend of games since tough new anti-sectarian laws were introduced.

Officers detained one 47-year-old outside Ibrox stadium during Rangers’ clash with Hearts.

Another supporter was huckled out of the ground during the crisis-hit club’s 2-1 defeat by the Jambos.

The pair could now face a staggering FIVE YEARS in prison if they are charged under the controversial Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act which finally came into force on Thursday.

And they could be banned from soccer grounds if found to be indulging in bigoted and threatening behaviour which could incite violence at and around games.

The Act was borne out of a series of high-profile bust-ups and sectarian incidents last season which shamed Scottish football.

And the law was pushed through by the SNP at Holyrood last November — despite huge opposition from clubs, fans’ groups, church leaders and legal experts.

There were NO arrests during yesterday’s showdown between Aberdeen and Celtic at Pittodrie — but yesterday’s crackdown at Ibrox has led to yet more concerns over freedom of expression.

Peter Kearney, of the Catholic Church, said: “We are in favour of the threatening communications element and clamping down on web hate. But the new law risks infringing freedom of expression because the term offensiveness is so wide.

“Isn’t 50,000 rugby fans singing Flower of Scotland offensive to English people?”

Mr Kearney, below left, added: “What is the main job of a football fan? It is to cheer on their team and offend opponents. In the confines of a stadium fans shout abuse at one another, which is not abnormal.

“Part of the thing about football is you let off steam. I think we would rather there is screaming and shouting in the ground than physical violence in the street.”

A massive 3,330 signatures OPPOSING the law have already been amassed by the Take a Liberty (Scotland) campaign.

The drive is the brainchild of university boffin Dr Stuart Waiton.

The 44-year-old said: “Scottish football is probably now the most regulated environment in the world. You can be offensive as a comic, a rugby fan or as lots of people — but clearly not as a football fan.

“There’s an old form of contempt for working-class football fans. Sectarianism in Scotland has not got very much to do with religion.

“So the fact the government bangs on about religion, when it means less and less to people, is peculiar.

“Sectarianism doesn’t mean Protestants hate Catholics, it’s a football thing.

“You have ordinary people singing songs in order to wind up the opposition.

“There is no need to ‘tolerate’ a football fan’s behaviour, because the passion and even the offensiveness on display is what helps make it the greatest game in the world.”

And Scottish Tory justice spokesman David McLetchie said: “This is just the beginning of what will be a flood of prosecutions as established laws are ignored in favour of this new legislation. This will no doubt be presented as a great success by the SNP but in reality it is a complete sham as the existing laws were more than adequate to deal with this behaviour.”

But the law WAS praised by the groundbreaking Nil By Mouth group who have branded sectarian bigotry as Scotland’s “cancer”.

Director Dave Scott said: “We will be monitoring how the new law is being implemented closely. Judging by our inbox I suspect the online aspect of the law will be the one to watch.

“The internet is being used to bring sectarianism into the 21st century and people feel that they can peddle it without consequences.”

And Roseanna Cunningham the Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs, said the Act was designed to ensure most fans can enjoy the game.

She said: “The overwhelming majority of fans who have been supporting their teams in the true spirit of the game for years have absolutely nothing to fear from this legislation. In fact it is designed to improve their experience, ensuring they can focus on football and not be distracted by the mindless, hateful prejudices of a small minority.

“This legislation will have no impact on the banter and passionate support that goes hand in hand with supporting football teams.

“It is not about discouraging the rivalry that is the lifeblood of football — it is about eradicating sectarianism and other unacceptable expressions of hate from our national game.”

She said the government had taken a hard line against the bigots after pleas from police and prosecutors.

Ms Cunningham added: “The majority of Scots, 91 per cent, supported tougher action to tackle sectarianism.

“This legislation will not be the one-stop solution to all our problems. That is why I recently announced £9million over the next three years to continue work to tackle sectarianism across society.

“Attitudes change over time and this marks the beginning of the end of the shame that has blighted our glorious game for too long.”

“The Incident occurred at 2am this morning. It was the same two young chaps that done the previous incident 8 days ago.

We have them on camera and we are quite confident we now be able to identify them.

The charges I am told is arson, willfull fireraising, and intent to endanger life.

The police are taking this seriously and we expect the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

There is also the possibility that they will be hit with an ASBO and will be evicted.

On a seperate issue, we were standing outside the pub today at 10.30 when a passing motorist slowed down and shouted sectarian abuse at us. He is now in the custody of Strathclyde Police, where he will remain until monday morning when he face charges under the new football offensive behaviour bill. Seems that it is now a two way street with this stuff”
