carling cup final: LIVERPOOL-CARDIFF 2-2 ( 3-2 ON PENALTIES )

Liverpool celebrate

26 February 2012 Last updated at 19:39 GMT

Kenny Dalglish won the first silverware of his second spell as Liverpool manager after his side came through a compelling Carling Cup final to beat Cardiff City on penalties.

Anthony Gerrard missed the final kick of a dramatic penalty shoot-out to hand victory to the Merseysiders – their first trophy since the 2006 FA Cup – but it was a cruel way for the Welsh side to be beaten.

  • Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) -missed 0-0
  • Kenny Miller (Cardiff) – missed 0-0
  • Charlie Adam (Liverpool) – missed 0-0
  • Don Cowie (Cardiff) – scored 0-1
  • Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool) – scored 1-1
  • Rudy Gestede (Cardiff) – missed 1-1
  • Stuart Downing (Liverpool) – scored 2-1
  • Peter Whittingham (Cardiff) – scored 2-2
  • Glen Johnson (Liverpool) – scored 3-2
  • Anthony Gerrard (Cardiff) – missed 3-2

The Championship outfit took a surprise first-half lead through Joe Mason and defended valiantly, even after Martin Skrtel had levelled on the hour mark.

Dirk Kuyt thought he had won it for Liverpool with an instinctive extra-time finish, but Ben Turner bundled home at the death to force penalties.

Even then, Liverpool seemed determined to do things the hard way, with Steven Gerrard – Anthony’s cousin – having his effort brilliantly saved by Tom Heaton, before Charlie Adam blasted over.

After Kenny Miller hit the post, Don Cowie sent Pepe Reina the wrong way to give the Bluebirds the advantage after two spot-kicks apiece.

But, while Kuyt, Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson all found the net, Cardiff missed two of their next three penalties, with Rudy Gestede also hitting the woodwork before Anthony Gerrard’s miss proved decisive in handing Liverpool their eighth League Cup.

It means that, 13 months after he returned to the Anfield hotseat, Dalglish becomes only the seventh manager to win all three major competitions in England.

Liverpool celebrate penalty shoot-out victory

This triumph was one of the closest of his managerial career – and almost ruined their first visit to Wembley for 16 years.

Liverpool certainly started confidently enough, when Johnson hit the woodwork from their first attack.

After Steven Gerrard surged out of his own half, Johnson bent in a shot which beat Heaton but came back off the underside of the bar, with Gerrard firing the follow-up over.

Cardiff were being pegged back and, with Downing and Jordan Henderson seeing plenty of the ball, Liverpool aimed a succession of crosses towards Andy Carroll.

But, as has so often been the case this season, there was no end product to their attacks, and Cardiff began to find a foothold in the game.

The Bluebirds had already threatened through Miller, who ended a neat passing move by swivelling to blast over from the edge of the box, when Mason put them ahead in the 18th minute.

A poor defensive header by Skrtel was picked up by Kevin McNaughton and, from his pass, Miller set Mason free to power his low shot under the onrushing Reina.

Liverpool’s League Cup wins

  • 1981 – Beat West Ham 2-1
  • 1982 – Beat Tottenham 3-1
  • 1983 – Beat Manchester United 2-1
  • 1984 – Beat Everton 1-0
  • 1995 – Beat Bolton 2-1
  • 2001 – Beat Birmingham 5-4 on penalties
  • 2003 – Beat Manchester United 2-0
  • 2012 – Beat Cardiff 3-2 on penalties

Even finding themselves trailing unexpectedly did nothing to improve Liverpool’s productivity in the final third, however, and Cardiff’s defence – expertly marshalled by Mark Hudson – largely kept them at bay.

Frustration was visibly growing among the Liverpool fans, and the biggest surprise when Craig Bellamy came off the bench just before the hour mark was that it had taken Dalglish so long to bring him on.

An equaliser followed almost immediately, although the Welshman had nothing to do with it.

From Downing’s corner, Luis Suarez glanced Carroll’s header on to the post and Skrtel was first to the rebound, taking a touch before driving the ball between Heaton’s legs.

Liverpool continued to drive forward but Cardiff were not about to crumble and had the better chances at the end of the 90 minutes.

Cardiff’s exertions began to catch up with them in extra time, with Hudson being forced off by cramp and Liverpool enjoying a flurry of chances.

Heaton tipped Suarez’s shot wide and Andrew Taylor had to clear the Uruguayan’s header off the line from the resulting corner, while Carroll, Bellamy and Johnson were all narrowly off target with their efforts.

In the 108th minute, Cardiff finally cracked. Kuyt’s shot was blocked by Anthony Gerrard, Hudson’s replacement, but the ball came back to the Dutchman, who powered the ball past Heaton to put his side ahead.

But that was not the end of a thrilling tale. Kuyt was on hand to clear off the line as Cardiff pushed forward with one last effort and, from the resulting corner, he could not stop Turner bundling the ball home to take the game to penalties.

Liverpool FC fans joy at Carling Cup victory

LIVERPOOL FC fans told of their joy after they invaded the capital and watched the Reds pull off yet another epic trophy victory.

Thousands of LFC supporters descended on London for a rollercoaster Carling Cup Final and another chapter in the club’s illustrious history.

After 120 minutes of football and a penalty-shoot out hoarse fans were still singing and waving flags and banners as they headed away from Wembley – their first trip to the new England HQ in 16 years.

Stuart Green, 36, from Broadgreen, told the ECHO: “I’m just ecstatic now as we’re bringing the cup back to Merseyside with us. This is great, bringing the old glory days back to Liverpool.”

Michelle Wah, 32, from Knotty Ash, was with her son Sonnie Corrigan, six. She said: “It’s been great, the experience of a lifetime.

“We were close to some Cardiff fans and there was no bad feeling.”

Adam Merdassi, from Liverpool city centre, was with his friend Rich Adams, 23, from Heswall. He said: “It was a real party bus on the way down. We soaked up the atmosphere in the bars around Wembley and everywhere you looked there was a Red. We were taking over the pubs, but it was all good banter.

“We’re heading straight back now, as we’ve got work tomorrow. I’m glad I’m not the designated driver as we can have a few drinks on the way back to Merseyside.”

Karl and Linda Daly, 46 and 45, from Huyton, said: “The Cardiff and Liverpool fans have been fantastic, not an ounce of trouble. Everyone has just been mixing in.

“It was a more calm atmosphere than previous finals I’ve been to. It was the friendly final for me. Opposing fans were standing next to each other having a great time.”

Linda added: “I felt sorry for Gerrard’s cousin as he missed that final penalty. But I’m a true Red and made up we lifted that trophy.”

And Mark Hazelhurst, 45, from Wallasey, said: “The atmosphere was just fantastic. I got off the train at Euston and I’m surprised the tube didn’t derail as there were so many Liverpool fans bouncing up and down in the carriage on the way to Wembley. The London people didn’t know what had hit them, but it was all good-natured.”

Inside the stadium the famous Anfield flags took pride of place among the 89,000 capacity crowd. One made reference to the famous Cop Cat.

David Newman, 34, from Sydney was spotted with a sign strapped to his back saying “48 hours in transit and 11,000 miles. One Australian willing to give a vital organ for a ticket.”

Having snapped one up for the very reasonable price of £50 he said: “I’m ecstatic I’ve got this. It’s a lot less than I thought I was going to have to pay. Let’s hope it gets me through the turnstiles and barcode scanner.”

Some Liverpool FC fans staged a public demonstration against the Sun on Sunday which was launched yesterday.

Stone Island 30 year anniversary

January 20, 2012 by

Stone Island, the Italian clothing label, is 30 years old this year. Set up in 1982 by the late Massimo Osti as a diffusion line to his main CP Company label, the brand with the compass patch on the upper arm is perhaps (for better or worse) more synonymous with football culture than any other.

For many, that is to it’s eternal detriment, and no book/film/spoof about ‘casuals’ made today will be complete without at least one bonehead sporting a SI jacket. But you shouldn’t let that put you off, because Stone Island have and still produce top quality, innovative clothing. As the tired old cliche goes, it ain’t what you wear it’s how you wear it – and that is especially true with this brand. The beauty of SI is that the little compass – that symbol the British Police laughably tried to link to fascism – can easily be unbuttoned and put away somewhere safe. You still have your nice jacket on, but won’t receive unwanted attention from the police or the aforementioned bonehead fraternity. That’s my personal take on it anyway.

For the anniversary, Stone Island are releasing a few bits and pieces to commemorate 30 years in the business. In the vid above, head honcho Carlo Rivetti, who seems an affable chap even if I can only follow him in subtitles, explains what’s coming up. If I’m honest the three garments in the video do nothing for me, there may be other stuff coming too, but he mentions publishing a book that will document the whole Stone Island range, now that I will be looking out for, definitely.

Cardiff City fans’ Carling Cup tribute to Mike Dye at Wembley

Michael Dye Michael Dye was killed by single punch before a Euro 2012 qualifier at Wembley Stadium

Cardiff City supporters heading to Wembley for the Carling Cup Final are to pay tribute to a fan killed at the London stadium last year.

Michael Dye, 44, died of head injuries after he was punched shortly before the kick-off of to the Wales v England Euro 2012 qualifier in September.

The City fan, from Ely, Cardiff, will be remembered on Sunday when his team take on Liverpool.

An area will be set aside for people to leave flowers, scarves and flags.

Gwyn Davies, from the Cardiff and Valley Rams supporters club, said: “They are giving us an area near the turnstiles and that will be a tribute area.

“People are going to take flowers, scarves and flags just to commemorate him.

“Some people have said they wanted a minute’s silence but I think the match should be the match and we should all congregate at the area outside for five minutes of peace for Mike to remember him.

Things have moved on and Mikey would want us to have a good day out”

“Then we should go and watch the game for him and win the match for him.”

He said the return to Wembley would be difficult for many of Mr Dye’s friends.

“It will be a bit bittersweet [going to Wembley],” said Mr Davies.

“How can we walk where Mike took his last steps without thinking that?

“But I want it to be a happy day. Things have moved on and Mikey would want us to have a good day out.”

Father-of-three Mr Dye, who worked as a stonemason for Cardiff council, was a long-time Cardiff fan who wrote about the club on the Cardiff City Forum website.

He was found injured outside Wembley’s Gate C on 6 September before the Euro 2012 qualifier match.

He suffered a fractured skull after being punched and died later in hospital.

X, 41, from Redditch, Worcestershire, pleaded guilty to Mr Dye’s manslaughter at the Old Bailey in November.

He was jailed for three years.

Liverpool Fans Face Travel Chaos For Carling Cup Final After Train Derailment

Football fans heading to the Carling Cup final at Wembley faced transport chaos today after a train derailed overnight leaving the main line between Liverpool and London blocked.

Thousands of Liverpool supporters are expected to make the journey to the capital to watch their team take on Cardiff City in the cup clash this afternoon.

But those planning to travel on the rail network have been advised to alter their plans. Virgin Trains are attempting to get coaches organised.

Services from the city are expected to be cancelled for much of the morning, and it’s not clear whether Liverpool fans will be able to get to Wembley in time for the final.

Virgin Trains said an engineering train derailed at Winsford, in Cheshire, overnight, leaving the line between Liverpool and Crewe and Warrington and Crewe blocked.

Issuing an apology, the operator recommended those travelling to London consider driving to Crewe, Stafford or Stoke stations and taking the train from there.

National Rail said there would be no trains from Liverpool Lime Street to Crewe until further notice, London Midland trains are also affected by the derailment.

Steven Knight from Virgin Trains said: “Today is an extremely busy day for us out of Liverpool and we have an army of people out this morning doing everything they possibly can.

“We are at the moment attempting to get coaches to Liverpool and Runcorn so they can provide a shuttle service to Crewe and connect with our train services to London.

“My advice to anyone intending to drive into Liverpool or Runcorn to get the train, if they are able to drive to Crewe, Stoke-on-Trent of Stafford stations then they can use the train services from there.”

The Preston to Crewe route is also affected.

Fans looking forward to the big day have begun spreading the news of the delays on social networking sites.

Citta Nirmala wrote on Twitter: “Oh God: ( All trains from Liverpool to London cancelled due to train crash, nightmare day for reds travelling from Liverpool”.)

While AlastairGW tweeted: “All trains between Liverpool and London are cancelled? What have he Cardiff fans been up to?”

Passengers travelling between Liverpool Lime Street and Crewe towards London Euston have been advised to travel via Chester or Manchester Piccadilly, while those heading to the capital from Runcorn have been told to take a replacement bus service to Crewe.

Commuters travelling from Wigan North Western or Warrington Bank Quay have also been advised to travel to London via Manchester Piccadilly.

Further details of the problems and the impact on today’s services can be found at the National Rail website.
