The First Minister has claimed Celtic will not prosper if their rivals Rangers cease to exist amid mounting financial problems.
Alex Salmond claimed the “most diehard Celtic supporter” will accept the need for the Ibrox club to stay afloat.
On Thursday, administrators Duff and Phelps held meetings with players and manager Ally McCoist after they were formally appointed on Tuesday.
This followed a late legal mover by HM Revenue and Customs to get a court-appointed administrator in as Rangers have not paid £9m in PAYE and VAT tax since Craig Whyte’s takeover last May.
After the administrators were called in, the SNP leader spoke about the news in an interview with Sir David Frost that will be broadcast on Al Jazeera English on Friday.
He said: “Obviously HMRC have got to pursue in the public interest, taxation. Equally, they’ve got to have cognisance of the fact that we’re talking about a huge institution, part of the fabric of the Scottish nation as well as Scottish football, and everybody realises that.
“The most diehard Celtic supporter understands that Celtic can’t prosper unless Rangers are there. The rest of the clubs understand that as well. Therefore you have to have cognisance of these things when you’re pursuing public policy.
“We’ve certainly been arguing to HMRC on one hand, and indeed to Rangers, to for goodness sake get a settlement, get a settlement and a structure over time whereby Rangers can continue because Rangers must continue for the future of Scottish football and for the fabric of the country.”
Previously, Mr Salmond has said he has been in discussions with the crisis-hit club and HMRC about the situation at Ibrox, as well as the ongoing case against Rangers that could leave them with a tax bill of up to £75m, according to owner Craig Whyte.
Earlier this week, Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said that they have a “stand-alone strategy”.
He told BBC Scotland: “We look after ourselves. We don’t rely on any other club. We are in a decent position, we’re very strong.
“Our aspirations and horizons are to dominate in Scotland but also beyond that. We want to compete at the highest level again in Europe.
“We have a stand-alone strategy, a stand-alone financial plan and a robustness hopefully that will take us through that.”

Rangers will NOT die
THE men charged with saving Rangers have insisted they WON’T allow the club to die.
After two days of turmoil, administrators Duff and Phelps are adamant the Ibrox giants will survive.
In a statement issued last night, they announced: “In broad terms, supporters can be reassured that Rangers WILL continue as a football club.
“We hope to reach a stage as soon as possible where the club can emerge from administration.”
The announcement — in a joint statement released by administrators Paul Clark and David Whitehouse — will be warmly welcomed by Gers fans as the spectre of bankruptcy hovers over the club.
The administrators were called in after Rangers admitted their debts — including a £9m tax bill — had become unmanageable.
But after lengthy meetings at Ibrox yesterday, Clark and Whitehouse stated: “We can report we have made very good progress within the first 24 hours of being appointed.
“We have had expressions of support across the political spectrum in Scotland within the last 24 hours and there is clearly a desire to see Rangers come through this situation successfully. We are involved in dialogue with HMRC and will work with them constructively, as is the case with all other key stakeholders.”
Gers’ SPL clash with Kilmarnock at Ibrox will go ahead as planned on Saturday. But before then staff cuts will be made.
The players are expected to meet administrators this morning with a further round of staff talks expected later today.
The administrators added: “We fully recognise this is a difficult time for players and staff at the club and are extremely appreciative of their reaction.
“We will hold meetings with the staff on a weekly basis at least to inform them of developments.”
Boss Ally McCoist will hold crisis talks with the administrators this morning, before they meet players.
As we revealed yesterday, Lee McCulloch, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis have been appointed unofficial spokesmen for the team and will act as a buffer between the administrators and PFA Scotland.
It’s understood players nearing the end of their contracts, such as Sasa Papac, Sone Aluko and David Healy, are at most risk.
No immediate cuts’ to Rangers squad, say administrators
Administrators Duff and Phelps say meetings on Thursday will not result in immediate redundancies.
Rangers’ administrators have assured players that no job cuts will be made on Thursday.
Duff and Phelps say there will be “no immediate cuts in the playing staff” but have confirmed there will be a review of staffing levels shortly.
Co-administrator Paul Clark met with manager Ally McCoist earlier on Thursday morning and will go on to speak to players at Murray Park.
“Paul will be outlining the administration process,” said a spokesman.
“There will be a review of staff, including playing staff. That will take its course.”
The playing squad are also due to meet with representatives from the PFA Scotland union over their future.
The administrators will then address the media on Thursday afternoon at Ibrox, at which they will outline the outcome of their discussions.

Tensione fra tifosi del Milan e dell’Arsenal, la polizia carica gli ultras inglesi
Duecento tifosi dei Gunners sono venuti a contatto con quattro supporters del Milan in Piazza Duomo e hanno dato vita a un fitto lancio di bottiglie e lattine di birra.
Ore turbolente quelle prima di Milan–Arsenal per gli ultras delle due tifoserie. Un incontro ravvicinato fra i supporters di opposta fede calcistica ha infatti portato a un fitto lancio di oggetti in piazza Duomo a Milano, e all’intervento della polizia per placare gli animi surriscaldati.
Tutto ha avuto inizio con un contatto fra un piccolo gruppo di quattro ultras rossoneri e uno più consistente di ultras dei Gunners. Dopo uno scambio di insulti e gestacci, i tifosi inglesi, circa 200, hanno dapprima provato a inseguire quelli del Milan, poi, vedendo che si rifugiavano presso l’ingresso della Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, hanno dato vita a un fitto lancio di lattine e bottiglie di birra, intonando dei cori.
La polizia, in assetto antisommossa, ha deciso così di intervenire e di caricare gli ultras dei Gunners, che sono allora indietreggiati per evitare i colpi, radunandosi nel centro della piazza. Le forze dell’ordine continuano a monitorare la situazione. Intanto sul selciato della piazza sono rimaste le centinaia di lattine e bottiglie lanciate dai tifosi inglesi.

Dopo un fitto lancio di lattine e bottiglie di birra da parte dei tifosi dell’Arsenal in centro a Milano, in vista della partita di Champions di mercoledì sera contro il Milan, gli agenti della polizia in tenuta antisommossa hanno deciso di intervenire con una carica, partita dall’ingresso della Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Gli ultras dei Gunners si sono velocemente ritirati per evitare i colpi e successivamente si sono radunati nel centro della piazza, mentre le forze dell’ordine monitorano a distanza la situazione. Sul selciato sono rimasti cumuli di centinaia di lattine e bottiglie di birra, consumate dagli ultras in attesa della partita.
La dinamica – La tensione aveva cominciato a salire attorno alle 16, quando uno scambio di battute tra tifosi londinesi e rossoneri aveva riscaldato gli animi dei supporter della squadra ospite. A quel punto gli ultras dei Gunners hanno cominciato a lanciare lattine di birra verso l’ingresso della Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, dove quattro simpatizzanti rossoneri, i protagonisti del diverbi, si erano rifugiati. Dopo uno scambio di gestacci, i tifosi della squadra ospite hanno tentato di inseguire i quattro, venendo però bloccati all’ingresso della Galleria da agenti in borghese. L’episodio ha innescato la rabbia dei londinesi che hanno dato vita a un fitto lancio di lattine di birra e a una lunga serie di cori. Successivamente la carica delle forze dell’ordine.

AC Milan v Arsenal: fans clash with police in Italy ahead of Champions League clash at the San Siro
Clashes broke out between a group of Arsenal fans and police ahead of the Champions League match against AC Milan, according to reports in the Italian media.
English fans threw bottles and cans at police and Milan supporters on the central Piazza del Duomo in front of the 14th century cathedral that dominates the square.
Verbal clashes broke out between four Milan fans and a group of around 200 Arsenal supporters, who threw cans and chased their Italian counterparts into the landmark Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade adjoining the square.
The English fans were stopped by police but started throwing bottles.
One Arsenal fan suffered a head injury in the subsequent clashes while another was arrested before calm was restored.
